    2. The ancient Olympic Games
The first recorded Olympic Games took place in 776. B.C. at Olympia but the city may have functioned as a meeting place for worship and other political practices many years earlier. The city is located in western Greece . The games were held every four years. It is also presumed that such competitions pleased the spirits of the dead and were organized as part of funeral ceremonies for important people. Later games became part of religious festivals of honouring the gods but mostly they honoured the king of the gods – Zeus . The ancient stadium in Olympia could accommodate more than 40,000 spectators. The only event in the first 13 games was the stadion which is a running - race of 192 metres . As the years passed, longer running races and other types of competition became a part of the games – wrestling , the pentathlon, boxing and chariot-racing. The pentathlon was a combination of long jump , running, discus, and javelin throwing and wrestling. The games were so important that truce was called out between the fighting city- states . Olympic winners were greatly honoured. They were given olive wreaths as prizes and were treated like true heroes.
    3. The modern Olympic Games
The Olympic Games are the most important international athletic competition in the world. The games consist of the Summer Games and the Winter Games (the last being established in 1924) used to take place the same year as the Summer Games, but beginning in 1992 the games were divided and scheduled on four-year-cycles two years apart. Since 394 A.D. when the Olympic Games were banned by the Roman Emperor for religious reasons and their decline in quality . No Olympics were held for over a thousand years, until the year 1896. The games were revived by a French nobleman named Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin . The first contemporary Olympic Games took place with great glamour in Athens, in the Panathenaic Stadium. During the first games, only 13 countries participated but now that number has gone up to over two hundred . Athletes from all over the world take part and their achievements are watched from both near and far by hundreds of millions of spectators. The differences between the modern and ancient Olympic Games can be clearly seen . For instance, in ancient times only men were allowed to watch and participate but that has changed now. Also, athletes don’t have to perform nude, although the original idea of the games was to honour the human body . Each Olympic Games has an opening ceremony during which the sports stadium is filled with music, singing , dancing and fireworks . A closing ceremony in the same spirit takes place on the last day of the Games. The opening and closing ceremonies are an invitation to discover the culture of the country hosting the Games. Although most of the ceremony is creative and imaginative, there are some very strict rituals that have to be followed.
    Summer games:
In the Summer Games, athletes compete in a wide variety of competitions on the track , on the road , on grass , in the water, on the water, in the open air and indoors. The Winter Games feature sports practised on snow and ice, both indoors and outdoors. Many new events have been added, such as basketball, baseball and beach volleyball.
The Summer Games are held in various months and last for 16 days . Sports with separate men’s and women ’s event include archery, badminton, basketball, canoeing, cycling , fencing, gymnastics and several others . Men and women may compete in the gymnastics same team in equestrian ( horse riding) sports and some yachting events. Only men compete in boxing and modern pentathlon.
The host country must provide a large stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, the athletic events and football . Many host cities build special facilities for various Olympic events. More than 1,000 athletes now take part in the Summer Games and they represent more than 160 countries. The Summer Games of the year will take place in 2008 Beijing, China .
    Winter Games
The Winter Games are held in January or February . They last for 16 days. A sport must be popular in at least 25 countries on 3 continents to be considered for the Winter Games. About 3,000 athletes take part in the Winter Games. The host city of the Winter Games must provide an outdoor stadium. The opening and closing down ceremonies may be held there, the host city must also have at least 2 outdoor stadiums for figure skating, speed skating and ice- hockey . Skilled workers establish ski-runs for the cross -country, downhill, freestyle and slalom competitions. There must also be two ski- jumps near the host city. The most famous cross-country skier in Estonia are Andrus Veerpalu and Kristina Šmigun. The Winter Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 were very successful for Estonia's cross-country skiers: Andrus Veerpalu won the gold medal in the men’s 15 km classic -style cross-country skiing race. With Turin Olympics Andrus Veerpalu became double Olympic champion since he placed 1st in the same event in 2002 at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games.
Winter sports made their Olympic debut at the Summer Games in London in 1908. Figure skating competitions were organised for men, women and pairs . The experience was repeated at the Antwerp Games in 1920, along with an ice hockey tournament. In Chamonix in 1924, the winter sports finally had their own Games. Six sports were on the programme : bobsleigh, curling , ice hockey, skating, Nordic skiing (cross-country) and the military patrol race. The number of sports at the Winter Games has remained quite stable over the years. However , the number of events has increased considerably. At the Salt Lake City Games in 2002, there were seven sports – biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing – and a total of 78 events on the programme. The three major attractions on the Winter Games programme are ice hockey, skating and skiiing Ice hockey, like skating and skiing, is one of the sports that helped to launch the Olympic Winter Games. Skating has the longest Olympic history. Skiing is the sport with the largest number of events. Cross-country skiing is the oldest discipline and snowboarding is the newest while Alpine skiing appeared relatively late .

    8. Sports in Estonia
There have been many different thoughts about the beginning of sports in Estonia. There is no exact answer to that problem. It all depends on the point of view. You can go into ancient times looking for the beginnings of sports like wrestling. One possible beginning of Estonian sports could be games called "killamängud". The first Estonian mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records was a sportsman. In the Olympic Games of 1912 in Stockholm , the Finn Alfred Asikainen and the Estonian Martin Klein wrestled for a record 11 hours and 40 minutes. Klein won, and " Russia " was given as his country of residence .
The first chance to rectify this mistake came in 1918 when the Republic of Estonia came into being for the first time. Martin Klein was the first Estonian Olympic medal winner . Among other Estonians , the heavyweight wrestlers Georg Lurich, Aleksander Aberg and Georg Hackenschmidt were famous at the turn of the century. Before independence, Estonians were the best in the whole Russian empire in athletics (16 records out of 29), wrestling and weightlifting.
Estonian sport was therefore born before the independent state. Actually, it was an important factor in our national awakening. Several great figures of national politics , among them the first president Konstantin Päts, belonged to the sports association "Kalev" (1901). Because of that it is no surprise that sportsmen have always been held in high regard in Estonia.
The most popular fields of sport are light athletics (Olympic winners Jüri Tarmak and Jaak Uudmäe); basketball (Olympic winner Tiit Sokk , Martin Müürsepp in NBA); chess (grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest and Lembit Oll); sailing (double Olympic winners Tõnu and Toomas Tõniste); and cycling (Olympic winners Aavo Pikkuus and Erika Salumäe). Basketball is the most popular ball game in Estonia, and it is in this sport that the best results have been achieved. Though Tiit Sokk fought for the gold at the Seoul Olympics as a member of the Soviet team, he did it for his people.
Those who participate in sports for recreation, belong to the Estonian Health Sport Union. The Tartu skiing marathon is an internationally known event; it is a part of the Worldloppet series. There are always many running events going on all over Estonia. Hiking and tourism in general are also popular. Under foreign rule , sport has always been a means for national self-expression and a chance to establish relations with other countries. Now Estonians are again free, but the historic role of sport has not diminished. For this reason , Estonians have always considered themselves a sporting nation , and the sportsmen - Lurich, Palusalu , Keres - our national heroes.
    9. Sports in my life
Everyone has their own favorite sport, so do I. My favourite sport is football. I’m not very much a football player myself but I really like to watch the games on TV. Sometimes I play football with my classmates at the gym lessons. There are many reasons why football is my favorite game: I like it because it is exciting and challenging, it teaches teambuilding, discipline as well as teamwork. And probably the fact that my friends consider football as their favourite sport, has influenced my choice as well.
Although I have seen a lot of football matches on TV, I have unfortunately had only one chance to go and see the game in the field . This was an experience I would like to repeat. It was much interesting to watch the game in the real field and I was much more excited about the game. Football is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. It is a ball game played on a rectangular grass field with a goal at each end. The objective of the game is to score by maneuvering the ball into the opposing goal. The winner is the team which has scored most goals at the end of the match . There are many worldwide international competition of football. One of the major international competitions in football is the World Cup organized by Fédération Internationale de Football Association. Over 190 national teams compete in qualifying tournaments within the scope of continental confederations for a place in the finals . The finals tournament, which is held every four years, now involves 32 national teams competing. The last World Cup took place in Germany 2006. Estonia's most famous football player is undoubtedly Mart Poom, nicknamed the Estonian Giant, who is a popular goalkeeper for the English First Division team Sunderland FC. I personally don’t have a favourite football club. When there is a game on, I just am supporting one of the playing teams. Of course , if the Estonian team is playing, I support them.
    11. Conclusion
I think that going in for sports is very good. First, it keeps you fit. Then, it is good for your health. And if you attend school, you will do much better in physical education lessons.
However, in the new millennium , new sports have been going further from the physical aspect to the mental or psychological aspect of competing and cyber sports organizations are becoming more and more popular.

Pierre de Frédy, was a French pedagogue and historian, but is best known as the founder of the modern Olympic Games. He was born in Paris into a French aristocratic family. As a young man he was an avid sportsman with rowing being one of his favourites, also practicing the sports of boxing, fencing and horse-riding. Influenced by the social, political and scientific events of the late 19th century and his substantial education, Coubertin developed a passionate belief that sport possessed a power to benefit humankind and encourage peace among the nations of the world. He refused the military career planned for him by his family, as well as renouncing a promising political career. De Coubertin was inspired by his visits to British and American colleges and universities, and set out to improve education. He thought part of this improvement should be sports education, which he considered an important part of the personal development of young people.

SPORT In English the word ‘sport’ describes both casual play and the highest levels of performance. Recent surveys reveal that 10% of adults play sports more than twice a week, the majority of the British population involves in sport or physical recreation at least once a month. Most people have an interest in some sports as a player, spectator or gambler, but everybody in Britain seems to be fond of outdoor exercise, be it jogging, walking, rambling or just sitting on the bench outdoors. As British homes are rather cool in winter (at least for Estonians!), the saying goes that ‘the English like fresh air outdoors and indoors’. Most people are conscious of the good influence of sport on their health
