Satire in Lilliput

represented the Whigs. George I favoured the Whigs, so the Lilliputian emperor favoured the Low Heals. But the Prince of Whales favoured both parties, and thus the Lilliputian heir to the throne wore one HighHeel and one Low. When Gulliver started learning about the Lilliputians government he noticed that their government officials were chosen by rope dancing. To Gulliver and the reader these practices seem ridiculous and idiotic, but to the Lilliputians they see these practices as normal. Swift uses this scene to satire the British government at this time. The British government also elected their ministers in a same foolish manner. Throughout the first book in Gulliver's Travels, Swift uses satire to demonstrate British politics by using the Lilliputians as a tool to mock and at the same time educate England and its politics. Through Gulliver's eyes, Swift demonstrates the way British people lived in the eighteenth century. From each

„Agroecological Economics“ by Paul Wojtkow

About the author Birth Date: 1947 Wojtkowski, with over 25 years of experience in many corners of the world, is uniquely qualified to deal with landscape agroecology. Having observed agriculture in six continents and over 70 countries, Dr. Wojtkowski has seen what works and what doesn't. His six previous books have affirmed the underlying motives, theories, and concepts. They have also proposed a large tally of quintessentially nature-friendly, farming practices. As a trained economist with advanced degrees in both agricultural and forest economics, he is able to take the next step; that of presenting agroecology as a fully-fledged science complete with its own economic underpinnings. And so he wrote book called ,,Agroecological Economics", which I think is his life-work. Book review Agroecology is the science of applying ecological concepts and principles to the design, development, and management of sustainable agricultural systems

Islam

regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Islamic tradition holds that Jews and Christians distorted the revelations God gave to these prophets by either altering the text, introducing a false interpretation, or both. Islam includes many religious practices. Adherents are generally required to observe the Five Pillars of Islam, which are five duties that unite Muslims into a community. In addition to the Five Pillars, Islamic law (sharia) has developed a tradition of rulings that touch on virtually all aspects of life and society. This tradition encompasses everything from practical matters like dietary laws and banking to warfare. Almost all Muslims belong to one of two major denominations, the Sunni and Shi'a. The

Article: Estonians

Estonians... Estonia is quite a northern country and therefore Estonians may seem a bit peculiar to ones from south, but don't be scared, they will not eat you (alive). Estonians are quite tranquilly and bottled up people - they might love or hate you and if you're not an expert will not make a difference as they didn't care at all. Rarely tend they to kiss or hug each other unless their beloved ones. So if they nevertheless do it then there's a great chance you're dealing with some non- Estonians. But there's no reason for worrying- if a person is from a region where that kind of over-loving-behaviour is common and he or she practices it anyway then a bathetic Estonian will just bear it and play along. In case of visiting like in many other European countries in Estonia it's also polite to bring some presents with you, usually a box of chocolate or something like that will do the trick. To greet "Tere!" is the word you won't get wron...

which motivated them to stop USA's underground nuclear testing and that was the first time they did something good for environment and they wanted to keep doing that. Objectives 1 Greenpeace is perhaps best known for its campaigns to protect whales and other large aquatic animals from hunters and trappers. Greenpeace programs target multiple areas of ocean defense, centering primarily on pollution and unfair or abusive fishing practices. 2 Many electronics and other products contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals that are difficult to dispose of and impossible to recycle. Greenpeace studies the effects of these chemicals on water, air and the human body and advocates substituting safer alternatives for dangerous materials. 3 Logging and clear-cutting of ancient forests drive species of plants and animals toward extinction and threaten the lives of people whose survival depends on the forest's resources

Healthy Life

Healthy Life I do not workout. I just do not have time for that and I do not have a mind to do workout sometimes. My way to workout is to play basketball, 90 minutes PE classes once a week and walk with my dog. In summers, I usually watch soccer on television and sometimes play basketball. My mother, father and sister are completely opposites of me. My sister practices swimming and soccer three times a week, including she rides with a bike. My mother bought herself a fitness machine; she uses it twice a week. My father also goes to fitness centre, rides with a bike and runs three times a week. In our family there is only me, who workout with my brain instead to do physical exercises. In addition, my grandparents are not capable to workout; they are too old for that as they say. In my family, many people do different activities

Celtic Mythology / Keldi Mütoloogia

Gaels and Brythonic tribes of Great Britain and Ireland) left vestigial remnants of their forebears' mythologies, put into written form during the Middle Ages. Though the Celtic world at its apex covered much of western and central Europe, it was not politically unified nor was there any substantial central source of cultural influence or homogeneity; as a result, there was a great deal of variation in local practices of Celtic religion (although certain motifs, for example the god Lugh, appear to have diffused throughout the Celtic world). Inscriptions to more than three hundred deities, often equated with their Roman counterparts, have survived, but of these most appear to have been genii locorum, local or tribal gods, and few were widely worshipped. However, from what has survived of Celtic mythology, it is possible to discern commonalities which hint at a more unified pantheon than is often given credit

Constructivism theory

think and interact with one another." In contrast to realism, for which international relations are driven by the states' security and material interests defined in terms of power, and to liberal internationalism that concentrates upon the interdependency of international actors and their operation within institutional constraints, constructivism considers international politics as a sphere of interaction which is shaped by the actors' identities and practices and influenced by constantly changing normative institutional structures. For all theories of international relations, the world is in anarchy, and because of this it is helpful to start with a definition of anarchy and what it implies. Anarchy, for theories that deal with international relations, refers to the world as a whole having no government. There are individual states that have varying degrees of power and sovereignty in their own land, but clearly there is no single

Water pollution

Water pollution Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater caused by human activities, which can be harmful to organisms and plants and for all of us. First, we have to talk about the causes of water pollution. Domestic households, industrial and agricultural practices produce wastewater that can cause pollution of many lakes and rivers. Industry is a huge source of water pollution, it produces pollutants that are extremely harmful to people and the environment. Dumping of litter in the sea can also cause huge problems. Different items take different lengths of time to degrade in water. Oceans are polluted by oil on a daily basis from oil spills, everyday shipping and dumping.

Backpaking lifestyle

[email protected] ABSTRACT Scholarship on backpackers speculates some individuals may extend backpacking to a way of life. This article empirically explores this proposition using lifestyle consumption as its framing concept and conceptualises individuals who style their lives around the enduring practice of backpacking as ‘lifestyle travellers’. Ethnographic interviews with lifestyle travellers in India and Thailand offer an emic account of the practices, ideologies and social identity that characterise lifestyle travel as a distinctive subtype within backpacking. Departing from the drifter construct, which (re)constitutes this identity as socially deviant, the concept of lifestyle allows for a contemporary appraisal of these individuals’ patterns of meaningful consumption and wider insights into how ongoing mobility can lead to different ways of understanding identities and relating to place.

Referaat Islami usust

Muslims believe that God is one and incomparable. Muslims also believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed at many times and places before, including through the prophets Abraham, Moses and Jesus. Muslims maintain that previous messages and revelations have been partially changed or corrupted over time, but consider the Qur'an to be both unaltered and the final revelation from God. Religious concepts and practices include the five pillars of Islam, which are basic concepts and obligatory acts of worship, and following Islamic law, which touches on virtually every aspect of life and society, encompassing everything from banking and welfare, to warfare and the environment. Most Muslims belong to one of two denominations; with 80-90% being Sunni and 10-20% being Shia. About 13% of Muslims live in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country, 25% in

Soil microflora

2002). Factors influencing soil microflora Soil microorganisms depend on soil for their nutrition, growth and activity. Based on My Agriculture Information Bank (2013) the major soil factors which influence the microbial population, distribution and their activity in the soil are: 1. Natural conditions (including soil fertility, pH, aeritation, temperature, moisture, organic matter, food and energy supply, microbial association and interactions) 2. Cultural practices These factors play a great role in determining not only the number and type of organism but also their activities. Variations in any one or more of these factors may lead to the changes in the activity of the organisms which ultimately affect the soil fertility level. What if there isn't enough work to go round? What if the employers decide to introduce new working practices? And what happens if the two sides can't agree? What would happen then if state benefits were cut completely? If this also makes Britain more attractive for overseas visitors, so well and good. SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING GUIDELINES

Social performance can be gauged through an analysis of the organisation’s impacts on stakeholders at the local, national, and global levels. In some cases, social indicators influence the organisation’s intangible assets, such as its human capital and reputation. Social performance measurement enjoys less of a consensus than environmental performance measurement. Through its consultative process, GRI has selected indicators by identifying key performance aspects surrounding labour practices, human rights, and broader issues affecting consumers, community, and other stakeholders in society. The aspects of labour practices that relate to human rights have been incorporated into the latter category. This decision was made to avoid treating “labour rights” as something different from, or less important than, “human rights”. The decision reflects the strong sentiment that an organisation’s contribution in the area of labour practices should not be

Since Halloween came to America from Ireland (Scotland and Wales) people used pumpkins because they were bigger and easier to hollow out than turnips. During the centuries the cultures have added their own elements to the way Halloween is celebrated. Druids in Britain and Ireland would light bonfires, dance around them and offer sacrifices of animal and crops. The fires were also intended to give warmth to the households and to keep free from evil spirits. Through the ages these practices changed. Kids love dressing up for halloween. How Are Black Women Portrayed in the Novel?

to express their thoughts and insults. Persecution by a black female is most notably seen when Antoinette describes being followed by a young black girl who sings “go away white cockroach, go away“. Thirdly, the black women are portrayed as self-sufficient and able to do decisions without men, especially Christophine. She is a wise and loyal figure. Christophine introduces Antoinette to the black culture of the Caribbean and instills in her a sensitivity to nature and belief in the practices of obeah. She is an outsider because she dresses and speaks differently from the Jamaican blacks. She is a servant, but, unlike the other black servants who live at Coulibri, she remains loyal to the Cosway women. She provides a contrast to Annette because she exercises complete independence from men and distrusts their motives. Although she has three children by three different fathers, Christophine remains unmarried, saying “I thank my God. I keep my money. I don´t give it to no

"Legal english vs everyday english" speech

So do most lawyers. You know Latin was and is important for English law, the practice of using Latin word versus in case names (for "against") still occurs daily. Why change something that has been used and appreciated for thousands of years? Law is known for it's conservatism and legalese might have maintained so well because many lawyers have learned it's value and feel special to be one of the few who can understand it. Secondly, legal language includes some very complex linguistic practices of an ancient profession, so maybe the best way to sound like a professional is to use as much legal vocabulary as possible. There are literally thousands of terms to choose from. No one will doubt that you are a real professional if you use the right expressions. Body 2: That brings us to a fact that regular people have been frustrated with legal language for quite some time since it can sometimes be confusing and unnecessary. Savanna

The maquis shrub savannas of the Mediterranean region were likewise created and maintained by anthropogenic fire. These fires are usually confined to the herbaceous layer and do little long term damage to mature trees. However, these fires do serve to either kill or suppress tree seedlings, thus preventing the establishment of a continuous tree canopy which would prevent further grass growth. Prior to European settlement aboriginal land use practices, including fire, influenced vegetation and may have maintained and modified savanna flora. It has been suggested by many authors that aboriginal burning created a structurally more open savanna landscape. Aboriginal burning certainly created a habitat mosaic that probably increased biodiversity and changed the structure of woodlands and geographic range of numerous woodland species. It has been suggested by many authors that with the removal or alteration of traditional burning regimes

To build a more diverse work force, an organization needs to enhance two critical aspects: the process by which employees are recruited and hired, and the environment in which they work. Creating and maintaining a supportive and productive work environment and providing opportunities for employee development are as important in retaining quality employees as is the process of recruiting them. The committee gathered information on ONR's recruitment and hiring practices from several sources. The Office of Human Resources within ONR provided extensive background information and sample materials describing current recruitment and hiring policies and practices. They also permitted examination of 13 files documenting recent hiring actions of scientists and engineers into ONR. In addition, personal interviews with program officers and senior executives yielded important insights into the attitudes and beliefs that underlie hiring decisions. The work environment

orderly, reasonable social arrangements of Utopia and its environs (Tallstoria, Nolandia, and Aircastle). In Utopia, with communal ownership of land, private property does not exist, men and women are educated alike, and there is almost complete religious toleration. Some take the novel's principal message to be the social need for order and discipline rather than liberty. The country of Utopia tolerates different religious practices but does not tolerate atheists. Hythlodeaus theorises that if a man did not believe in a god or in an afterlife he could never be trusted, because he would not acknowledge any authority or principle outside himself. * Utopia is a work of satire, indirectly criticizing Europe's political corruption and religious hypocrisy. More was a Catholic Humanist. Alongside his close friend, the philosopher and writer Erasmus, More saw Humanism as a way to combine faith and reason.

Analüüs Swifti kirjandusest inglise keeles

In Lilliput the HighHeels represented the Tories and the LowHeels represented the Whigs. George I favored the Whigs, so the Lilliputian emperor favored the LowHeals. But the Prince of Whales favored both parties, and thus the Lilliputian heir to the throne wore one HighHeel and one Low. The British government also elected their ministers in a same foolish manner.

other people and animals. They also are more likely to become infected with diseases carried by insects or rodents (). In arid()regions, drought leaves the poor without clean water for drinking or bathing. In temperate climates, including in the major cities of developed countries many of the homeless poor are harmed by or die of exposure ()to extreme winter cold. Inadequate shelter almost always accompanies inadequate sanitation and unhygienic practices. Because the poor in developing nations commonly have no running water or sewage() facilities, human excrement and garbage accumulate, quickly becoming a breeding ground for disease. In cities, especially in ghettoes() and shantytowns that house only poor people, overcrowding can lead to high transmission rates of airborne diseases, such as tuberculosis. In particular, the incidence ( ) of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) among poor people is higher than average.

Global Warming

coal, and natural gas. Another contributing factor is the the amount of forest logged. Every second of the day the area of a football field in trees is cleared by either being logged or burnt. The potential costs of cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions might sacrifice economic growth and our standard of living. By doing this we might need to change our habits and behavior. Furthermore we need to make investments in technology we need to adopt green building practices and buy clean cars. We all can do our part to help the planet by making small changing in our lifestyle. Simply turning off the lights every time you leave the room will dramatically decrease the amount of carbon dioxide produced. Using fluorescent light bulbs and properly inflated tires will also contribute to saving the planet. Global warming is a growing problem in our modern world. Changes will have to be made to stop its effects on the world

Aadvantages and disadvantages of being on tv?

chunks. Another disadvantage is how difficult it can be to make changes. Whereas with newspaper advertising, updating sale pricing or a special offer is often as simple as swapping out a coupon, with television advertising it means updating your script and reshooting the entire ad, which costs additional money. It can also be difficult to effectively target your core audience with television advertising, although there are a few best practices that can help. For starters, consider who your audience is before structuring your ad and purchasing airtime. Is a large portion of your clientele Spanish speaking? If so, you'd do well to purchase airtime on a Spanish-language station such as Telemundo. And if you're in the baby stroller business, you're probably better off purchasing time slots during the day when stay-at-home moms are most likely to see your ad.

and all the teachers rate them. At the end of every year we have a few month of practice where we go to some Design company or like I did go to some newspaper and practice what we've learned. This is also graded by the teachers. Artistic design graduates are trained to work at advertising agency's, in media, and manufacturing companies. Our school year is divided to two one part of the year we have main high school subjects, the other part are the speciality subjects and practices. Target groups are all people youner or older, who ever are willing to learn. The classrooms, toiletrooms and corridors all are newly renovated and oftenly covered with paintings . Because of our uniqueness in Estonia for being the 1 out of 2, we also have campuses where students outside from the island can stay while studying in school. The campuses are always full.
