If as a country and a society we care about the wellbeing of fellow citizens and society as a whole then we decriminalize the plant that has minimal documented harm, especially when compared to legal drugs: alcohol and nicotine, and has beneficial effects on users who use it to alleviate different illness symptoms. Furthermore punishing people for possession ruins their lives, drains resources and stops objective discussion and implementation of nations drug policy in the long run greatly reducing our ability to face the challenges that much more addictive and harmful drugs pose to society. Judging by the numbers, it will have a significant negative effect on the UK. That goes for the EU also, where people working and living in Great Britain could lose their income and will have to find a new place to live. On the other hand, it has triggered some changes in the EU that in the end could benefit greatly. Everything negative comes with something positive attached to it and only the future will tell how we’ll cope with it.
