“You can never go home again“ Lord of the flies

For example in the third chapter all boys are still civilised and enjoy the beauty of the island when Simon finds this magical open place in the jungle that represents the innocence that still exists on the island. Then in chapter eight when Simon visits this jungle glade again he finds a sow's head on the stake there. The fact how this setting changed during five chapters is described in a quote from chapter eight ,,The other time the air had seemed to vibrate with heat; but now it threatened." Simon's secret place had turned from unearthy paradise into something terrifying and that also symbolised how the boys had become savages already. Without noticing the natural cruelty inside them developed, savagery instincts emerged and most of...

Safe streets again

Safe streets again Increasing crime frequency is serious concern for everybody. Feeling unsecure, being scared are things that we should not encounter in our society. Nevertheless we have to find solution, which will last. Firstly, we have to create greater police presence. More officers means more people will certainly get help and feel safe again, which is the most important. Also criminals cannot accomplish crimes, because they definitely do not want to be caught. Secondly, we have to establish tougher sentences for those who commit crimes. First reason being is they will sit longer in prison. Second reason: delinquent will think before he does something. For intance murderer will get death penalty or perhaps some burglar will do community service for long hours. Another option is to teach children not to take a evil road...

Sports Centre

you can take swimming lessons and much more. When you just want to take a time out you can take a steam bath, a regular sauna or just relax in a bubble bath. To me jyri sports centre has only one disadvantage. That you have to pay for these things which the sports centre includes. I find this as a disadvantage because in these hard times I do not have the luxury to go swimming or visit the gym, but again what is the price for your health? My suggestion to end these high prices is to build another sports centre to jyri. So the current sports centre will have some competition and they have to lower the prices to keep their clients and then the old sports centre can be the average Joe's sports centre and the people will have more different hobbies and things to choose from if we had another sports centre....

A lamb to the slaughter

Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl (1916-1990) The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight - hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the sideboard behind her, two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey. Fresh ice cubes in the Thermos bucket. Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come him (correction: home) from work. Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come. There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did. The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil. Her skin - for this was her sixth month with child - had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before...

Links between Estonia and English speaking countries

6 During the 50 years of Soviet occupation, the United States helped the Estonians living on both sides of the "Iron Curtain" to keep contact with each other by financing several radio stations, of which the most famous is called Voice of America. This radio station was also one of the only means for people in Estonia to get information of the world beyond Soviet block. After Estonia gained it's independence once again on 20 August 1991, the English speaking countries were among the first to recognise Estonia as an independent country. For instance the United States reopened its Embassy in Tallinn on 4 September 1991. Estonia joined the United Nations and started the preparation to join other international organisations as the European Union and NATO. For this purpose much technical assistance from the US has arrived. For instance in recent years, the United...

Ghost Story

He was barking at their garage. The family at first thought it was a cat or some other small animal; the father turned his attention to the garage. The whole family then went to see what was going on, when they opened the old squeaking garage door; they saw an old lady who was sitting in a chair rocking back and forth very slowly. The father went to the car and directed the cars headlights towards the lady, they saw nothing, when he turned the lights out again , and the lady appeared. He did it again, same thing happened. The family was stunned and scared. They drove away as quickly as they could and never went back to that house. They later found out that in the 19th century there lived a happy couple, but when the husband died, wife had gone crazy....

Meanwhile, I will er think it over." "Mphm." 7) "Well, McAllister?" said Lord Emsworth coldly. "What is the matter, McAllister?" "You appear agitated, McAllister." 8) "Oh!" said Freddie. He paused. "Oh, ah!" He paused again . "Oh, ah, yes! I've been meaning to tell you about that, guv'nor." "You have, have you?" "All perfectly correct, you know. Oh, yes, indeed! All most absolutely correct-o! Nothing fishy, I mean to say, or anything like that. She's my fiancée" A sharp howl escaped Lord Emsworth, as if one of the bees humming in the lavender-beds had taken time off to sting him in the neck. 9) "The fact is, guv'nor " "You know you are forbidden to come to...

Famous castles of Scotland

According to The Saga of Haakon Haakonsson, the Norsemen fought for three days to take the castle, breaking down part of the eastern wall by hewing the stone with their axes, and certainly the eastern wall shows signs of damage. This saga is the earliest recorded account of an assault on a Scottish castle. In 1263, Rothesay was taken again by the Norse under Haakon IV before the Battle of Largs. Although the Battle of Largs was indecisive, Haakon's campaign was unsuccessful, and effectively ended Norse influence in western Scotland. The 13th century curtain wall seen from the south-east, across the moat. The bases of the south-east and south-west towers can be seen. The early castle comprised only the roughly circular curtain wall, 3m thick and around 43m across, built on a low mound, with a battlement on top accessed by open stairs...

Tallinn

Pikk Hermann is the best-known corner tower among the three surviving ones of Toompea Castle. It is 46 metres high and serves as one of Estonia's landmarks. Tall Hermann was a traditional name given to the main towers of German castles. After the 50-year long Soviet occupation, the Estonian blue-black-white tricolour was once again hoisted on Pikk Hermann on 24 February 1989. The Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin (Toomkirik or the Dome Church) was consecrated as a single- nave church with a rectangular chancel in 1240, and rebuilt into a Gothic basilica thereafter. The church suffered in the fire of 1684 and was largely reconstructed. A baroque tower was added in the 18th century and the dated weather-vane (1779) crowning the spire is the only original one on Toompea today....

Viljandi

After the great northern war the russians revoked local autonomy until 1783, when in the course of the regency reforms of the empress catherine the great viljandi became a district town. This involved the re-establishment of town bylaws. The economic and political importance of viljandi started to increase. the population, after decreasing in population and wealth, started to rise again , as handicraft, trading, and cultural life were revived. The popular Estonian newspaper was founded in Viljandi in 1878. I like Viljandi. Sources Viljandi.-EE 10. Education

Such is life. As for class size, I think kids in quantity learn better, on average, than isolated children. I would like my children to have many friends, not few. This, too, I see as obvious. I'd rather have a house full of mess-making kids, than just one, lonely and uninspired. On the other hand, perhaps a student could learn enormously more from a tutor than in a classroom packed with other students. Again , there must be an ideal ratio, plus age considerations, as well as the nature of the topic being taught, to consider. A pet peeve of mine is how competitive athletics play an excessive role in schools. Schools cannot limit their scope to mere teaching of abstractions, such as algebra and grammar. They also need to instruct about health, including diet and exercise. Yet sports programs take too...

Irish Potato Famine

Irish Potato Famine During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and on top of that, the winter of 1846 was the "severest in living memory". The crop, which previously had provided 60% of the nations' food...

Corporal punishment

Corporal punishment In my opinion corporal punishment is unnecessary in our society, because nowadays students may react too fiercely. I believe with all the changes taking place in our world today, it is not realistic to think that the idea of corporal punishment would ever take hold again in schools. I think that most children would respond negatively to a change like this and that this change would only create more of a problem in the long run. Bullying can have a very bad effect on the child who is being bullied and on the child who is allowed to go on bullying. Corporal punishment was not allowed in our school. That is strictly denied to physically punish students in any way. In closing I believe that corporal punishment in schools is a thing of the past. I think that...
