Character sketch - Shel, Orlando by Virginia Woolf

However, before that they quickly let the servant wed them. Shel proved his love and went off, and Orlando got a ring that she had wanted. Although Shel was far away, they communicated between each other quite often. Orlando sent him telegraphs about her doings and vice versa. In the end of the book, it is nicely described how Orlando felt when she saw her husband's ship sailing towards her. ,,Oh rash, oh ridiculous man, always sailing, so uselessly, round Cape Horn in the teeth of a gale! But the brig was through the arch and out on the other side; it was safe at last!" Orlando could not wait any longer to see Shel, they were both full of anticipation. Shelmerdine had become a fine sea captain, who was hale, fresh-coloured and alert. He and Orlando were finally united again. In conclusion, Marmaduke Bonthrop Shelmerdine, Esquire was a seaman, who coincidentally met Orlando and they fell in love soon after

A Storm at Sea

A Storm at Sea Kelin Kuznetsova 8.B It was a cloudy afternoon, when Jason, Paul and Tony were on a sailing holiday last summer. It all took place at a calm sea. Jason was standing on the deck of the boat when he saw black clouds gathering in the sky. He realized that the storm is not far from them. A minute later they found themselves in the middle of the storm. Huge waves were crashing and the boat was rocking from side to side as thunder rolled across the sky. They were extremely scared. They understanded that they were in huge danger, so Tony radioed for help. Just then a bolt of lightning struck the boat and the mast burst into flames. Tony said ,,We can't save the boat, but we can save our lives". They jumped into the water and swam to the life raft. As they climbed into the life raft they saw the boat sink slowly. When the men heard the sound of a boat, th...

Windpower

Wind power is very old power source, sailing ships have been using wind power for at least 5,500 years. The first practical windmills were built in Afghanistan, from the 7th century to grind corn and draw up water. The first windmill for electricity production was built in Scotland in 1887 to power the lighting in the cottage, thus making it the first house in the world to have its electricity supplied by wind power. During the Second World War, small wind generators were to recharge submarine batteries. In the 1990s, wind power became more important, because fossil fuels pollute the atmosphere and humanity needed alternative fuels. That's because wind power is so necessary. Wind power is also renewable energy and it doesn't cause greenhouse gases. Building windmills is actually quite expensive and they need repairing or replacing about every 12-15 years. And strong winds can also break the wind turbines. Considering these thin...

The future seems dark. - 2012

This is somewhat misleading. While Mayans do not believe the world will end on 2012, many do believe that there will be a massive event, which will change the way we experience reality. What that actually is, however, is anyone's guess. There are many Christians who believe the coming of Christ will happen within their lifetime. This idea shouldn't be discounted immediately, but it does not necessarily mean the Jesus we understand in Western culture will come sailing down from the sky. If we consider that Jesus was a manifestation of God, it's possible that Christ may return embodied in another form. It's possible that all the differing theories about 2012 may all be about the same event, and have just been interpreted in different ways. For this reason, it's important we don't commit ourselves to one set idea of what will happen, and remain open to all possibilities.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

The only clue John Openshaw can furnish Holmes is a page from his Uncle's diary marked March 1869 in which pips have been sent to three men, of whom two flee and the third has been "visted". Holmes advises Openshaw to leave the diary page with a note telling of the destruction of the Colonel's papers on the garden sundial. After Openshaw leaves, Holmes deduces that from the time between the letter mailings and the deaths of Elias and his brother that the writer is on a sailing ship. Holmes also recognizes the "K.K.K" as Ku Klux Klan, an anti-Reconstruction group in the South until its sudden collapse in March 1869 -- and theorizes that this collapse was the result of the Colonel's taking their papers. The next day there is a newspaper account that the body of Openshaw has been found in the Thames River and believed to be an accident. Holmes checks sailing records of ships who were at both - Pondicherry in January / February

When they arrive, they buy supplies and camp in the woods. During their trip they make new friends, but also get into fight with two mean boys, do some chores for an old lady (Miss Williams), get lost, build a cabin and go fishing, swimming and sailing. After Joe and Kathleen have done some chores for Miss Williams, they buy a boat and camp on an island in the middle of the lake. Soon a rainstorm starts, but luckily they get rescued by the Lake Warden before the island disappears under water. In the end the kids get permission to stay with Miss Williams for the rest of the summer and they do't have to return to Mrs.McCafferty I think the book was too predictable and a little bit boring for me, but younger readers will certainly enjoy it

Somerset Maugham "French Joe" kokkuvõte!!

Joe showed him his scar in his bald head from an Uhlan's lance, but he put the sword thorugh Uhlan's body and he dropped dead. Later Joe joined the communists, Monsieur Thiers, for 6 weeks. After that he was sentenced to 5 years in New Caledonia. He was really angry when he talked about the Uhlans, even though it happened a half century ago. He wished he was shot instead of put in prison. He was a political prisoner but he was treated like vulgar criminal. After that came the long journey in sailing ship with prisoners, the ship out in Melbourne, one of the officers (fellow-Corsican) enabled him to slip over the side. He swam ashore and went straight to the police station, where no one could understand him. They sent a translator to help him out, his dripping papers were examined and he was told that as long as he didn't set door on a French ship he was safe – Freedom! He was crying when he told him that.

And the Chief Officer will look after the shipboard maintenance and cargo operation on board. Should the ship enter or leave ports, you may be required to work twelve hours a day depending upon the type of ship’s contract. During the off duty time, you are free to do anything as you want, but you will seldom actually complete your rank duties during shifts, so you will actually have to over-work after those. It will depend on which type of ship you are sailing with. From time to time, you will fly really far to join ships by plane, depending upon which company you work with. Practicing you will get head to head with difficulties and become a professional. In conclusion, I want to say, that to me, this job is worth studying and working hard. It is actually more than a few reasons why I choose it. It is just what I think, I should do. TTÜ EMARA 12.05.15 Oleksiy Krasnoperov LL-13

Luckily nowadays this is not such a big problem as it used to be. I liked the eloquent writing style and the authors' ability to put real

During those visits Columbus heard stories about life to the west of Europe. His ambition to find the shortest and safest sea route to the riches of the Far East started to grow. Gradually he worked out his plan to reach the East by sailing west. In 1482 Columbus tried to interest the Portugese king, Joao III, in his journey. The Portugese king had tried to find a route to the Indies from the east for a long time. Columbus explained that he believed he could reach the Indies from the west. In 1483 the Portugese king told Columbus that he would not pay for the journey because he did not believe that Columbus could find the Indies from the west. Columbus decided to ask the joint rulers of Spain, King Ferdinand of Aragon and

roller bearing. The cart was operated by a man pressing pedals.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] In the same year, he also designed "mechanical legs", a prosthetic device, which was later used by a French entrepreneur. In 1793, Kulibin constructed an elevator that lifted a cabin using screw mechanisms. In 1794, he created an optical telegraph for transmitting signals over distance. In 1801 Kulibin was fired from the academy and returned to Nizhny Novgorod, where he designed a method of sailing upstream and built a ship which he had started to design back in 1782. Tests indicated that such ships were indeed feasible, but they were never used. During the same time, Kulibin had projects on using steam engines to move cargo ships, on creating salt mining machines, different kinds of mills, pianos and other projects. Kulibin died in 1818 after spending his last years in poverty. The International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center has named an asteroid in

day Keldrimäe. Tallinn is one of the oldest cities on the Baltic Sea. In the 13 th century Tallinn joined the Hanseatic League. It is unique for its well-preserved architecture from the 13-15 centuries. In 1980 Tallinn was awarded the European Gold Medal for preserving several architectural monuments. Old Tallinn is also famous for its cosy, romantic bars and cafes. Tallinn of today offers modern hotels, restaurants, sport and cultural centres. The town is also a well-known sailing centre. The yachting regatta of the 1980 Moscow Olympic games was held at Pirita. At various times in history, the city has been given different names. In 1219 Henricus de Lettis wrote about the Lyndanise stronghold of the Rävala people. On 13 June that year King Waldemar II of Denmark came to conquer north Estonia. The Estonians lost the battle and the Danse renamed the town Reval, as it was the centre of the ancient Estonian province of Rävala. The Estonian, however,

The Galapagos islands

earth. Galapagos is comprised of 13 major islands, more than 120 smaller islets and rocks, and the surrounding ocean. The total land mass is almost 8,000 sq. km. Highest peak is Wolf Volcano reaching 1707m. The present islands are all younger than 4 million years and were formed separately from other land masses as a result of volcanic eruptions. The Galapagos were discovered in 1535 by Fray Toms de Berlanga, the Bishop of Panama. He was sailing from Panama to Peru when he accidentally discovered the islands. Islands became a favorite hideout for Pirates and the favorite location for whale hunters. After whales were locally cleared the whalers went there for tortoises, an estimated 200 000 or more adults had been removed. The island of Floreana was populated with a group of convicts' in October 1832. Charls Darwin visited the island in 1835, he spent there 5 weeks. Nowadays five of the islands are populated with about 40 000 inhabitants

National Symbols of New Zealand

National Symbols of New Zealand New Zealand flag History The idea of the flag of New Zealand was first introduced in 1830, because of trading troubles. At that time, a trading ship built inNZ, Sir George Murray was seized in Sydney by Customs officials for sailing without a flag or register. Australia, which was the most important trading partner for NZ had British navigation laws which ruled that every ship must carry an official certificate detailing construction, ownership and nationality of the ship. The problem was that during that period of time, NZ was not yet a colony ofGreat Britan, thats why the NZ-built ships could not sail under a British flag or register. Without a flag to represent the new nation,

Spanish California

Spain's northwestern most colony was California, claimed first by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Several early Spanish conquistadores looked seriously at California as a possible source of treasure, but none was found and Spain's attention quickly shifted elsewhere. In 1565 Miguel de Salcedo added the Philippine Islands to Spain's empire and a brief thought was given to developing a port on the coast of California to be used in support of the Spanish galleons sailing from Manila to Acapulco. Once again nothing was done and California remained undisturbed by European settlement for another two centuries. In the second half of the eighteenth century the world balance of power was shifting and New Spain was being threatened by several European powers including England, France and Russia. The Spanish King, Carlos III, decided that Spain would have to physically occupy California or risk losing it

Irish National Costums

Scoring is done in a soccer-type net, but, as in hurling, points can also be made for going over the top of the goal. Gaelic football is the precursor of Australian Rules football; the two sports are similar enough that Irish and Australian teams sometimes play each other with a set of compromise rules. The All-Ireland semifinals and finals, sponsored by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), are highlights of the hurling and Gaelic football seasons. Soccer, rugby, sailing, cycling, golf, and horse and greyhound racing are also favorite activities. Soccer has become a particularly popular spectator sport in the 1990s, reflecting the enthusiasm surrounding the national team's successes during the first half of the decade. Fishing, or angling, is also a common recreational activity, featuring mainly trout and salmon fishing. Rugby internationals played at Dublin's Lansdowne Road stadium are considered high points of the sporting year. Enthusiasts of horse racing

MARRIAGE Prince Charles had known Diana for several years, but he first took a serious interest in her as a potential bride during the summer of 1980, when they were guests at a country weekend, where she watched him play polo. The relationship developed as he invited her for a sailing weekend to Cowes, followed by an invitation to meet his family. There, Diana was well received by Queen Elizabeth II, by Prince Philip, and by the Queen Mother. The Prince proposed on 6 February 1981, and Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks. Their engagement became official on the 24 th of February in 1981, after Diana selected a large ring consisting of 14 diamonds, similar to her mother's engagement ring. 20-year-old Diana became
