DC at The Melrose Georgetown

If you are coming from Union Station you have to change once, at Metro Center, from the red line. But once we arrived, check-in was quick and easy. Within two minutes of walking through the lobby, we were in our room. Internet Connection Free and couldn't be easier to hop on: no password or sign-up required. Location The hotel is very accessible via public transportation, and, probably thanks to its college community, you'll find plenty of restaurants and bars in the immediate area. If eating out's not your thing, there is both a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods within two blocks, too. What We Didn't Li...

CRITISIM ABOUT IMF AND WORLD BANK

This essay is about criticism to IMF and World Bank. Critics of the World Bank and the IMF are concerned about the ‘conditionalities’ imposed on borrower countries. Often the conditionalities are attached without due regard for the borrower countries’ individual circumstances and the prescriptive recommendations by the World Bank and IMF fail to resolve the economic problems within the countries. As a example author is using Ecuador that is a small country in South America. In 1968- 1998 IMF and World Bank interviened with large loans to help the country but the growth of poverty increased form 50% to 70%, under or unemployment 15%to 70% and the public debt grew from 240 million to 16 billion (Perkins, 2004, lk 239). This essay is going to explore how this kind of thing could have happened? The idea is not to blame well...

Famous castles of Scotland

The 13th century curtain wall seen from the south-east, across the moat. The bases of the south-east and south-west towers can be seen. The early castle comprised only the roughly circular curtain wall, 3m thick and around 43m across, built on a low mound, with a battlement on top accessed by open stairs. The moat was connected to the sea, the shoreline being some 100m further south than today. The broad crenellations can be made out within the walls, which were later raised. Holes in the upper wall would have supported a timber bretasche, a projecting structure serving as an extended battlement. This curtain wall was built of coursed ashlar, and had only two openings in its length. The main gate was an arched opening with a simple timber door. The second opening was a small postern gate in the west wall, later blocked. In the later part of the 13th century, the castle was streng...

Education

Schooling choices are varied. If money was not problematic I would send my kids to the best schools. If money is lacking (and so far, it is) I'd send them to the best public schools within reasonable proximity. Home education is an alternative idea, and I won't rule it out, but need to learn more about it first. My hunch is, even average Seattle public schools can turn out well rounded, capable students, if the students receive excellent support at home. I say this because I've met such students. Also, some private schools kids have turned out to be unsuccessful. Probably a loving, involved family atmosphere, in which such...

Canada

Mackenzie River is Canada's longest river, which flows 4,241 km from its source to its mouth. With its many tributaries, it drains 1,800,000 square km. The St. Lawrence is the largest river flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Its drainage basin includes the Great Lakes, forming an inland navigable waterway extending some 3,765 km into the heart of the continent. The longest Pacific-draining river that is wholly within Canada is the Fraser. The Yukon and Columbia rivers, which both rise in Canada, also flow to the Pacific, but they do so through the United States. Five of Canada's rivers -- the St. Lawrence, Mackenzie, Yukon, Fraser, and Nelson -- rank among the world's 40 longest. 5. Margaret Thatcher

During her first months of work she was forced to make a cut in the education budget and therefore she abolished universal free milk for school-children. This caused a huge protest that gave her the name of "Thatcher Thatcher, Milk Snatcher". However, she also successfully stood against the introduction of library book charges. Within her term she also supported the proposals to close grammar schools and adopt comprehensive secondary education. Furthermore, Mrs. Thatcher also insisted that universities should accept not only school-leavers, but also adults. When Margaret became the Leader of Conservative Party, she made a speech where she made a scathing attack on the Soviet Union. In response the Soviet newspaper gave her the nickname of "Iron Lady" due to her steadfast character...

Michelangelo

During his life he lived in city's like Florence, Venice and Bologna in Tuscany, nowadays Italy. Later, during the prolonged illness and after the death of his mother, he lived as a stonecutter and his wife and family in the town of Settignano where his father owned a marble quarry and a small farm. Michelangelo once said to the biographer of artists Giorgio Vasari, "What little good I have within me came from the pure air of your native Arezzo and the chisels and hammers." Michelangelo's desire to become an artist was initially opposed by his father. After a period of grammatics studies with the humanist Francesco da Urbino, Michelangelo continued his apprenticeship in painting with Domenico Ghirlandaio and in sculpture with Bertoldo di Giovanni. Michelangelo's father managed to persuade Ghirlandaio to pay the young artist, which was u...

Mõtteterad

giving us another start of what we call Life. A morning greeting does not only mean 'Good Morning,' it has a silent, loving message saying, 'I think of you when I wake up. When I wake up in the morning, I think of you. When I go to sleep at night, I think of you. And for all those hours in-between, I think of us. Sometimes it's better to put love into hugs than to put it into words. A hug overcomes all boundaries. It speaks words within the mind that cannot be spoken. A silent hug means a thousands words to the unhappy heart. Hugs are to pull two people closer together, but why is it that you can never see the other person's expression when it happens? Hugging closes the door to hate. Kissing opens the door to love. Quick..., put your left hand on your right shoulder, put your right hand on your left shoulder, now squeeze! That was a quick hug from me! The best gift y...

Fridrick douglass

Autobiography Douglass' most well-known work is his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which was published in 1845. Critics frequently attacked the book as inauthentic, not believing that a black man could possibly have produced so eloquent a piece of literature. The book was an immediate bestseller and received overwhelmingly positive critical reviews. Within three years of its publication, it had been reprinted nine times with 11,000 copies circulating in the United States; it was also translated into the French and Dutch languages. The book's success had an unfortunate side effect: his friends and mentors feared that the publicity would draw the attention of his ex-owner, Hugh Auld, who could try to get his "property" back. They encouraged him to go on a tour in Ireland, as many other ex-slav...

A Midsummer Nights Dream

Climax :The play reaches its climax near the end of Act IV, after all of the lovers overcome their obstacles and leave for the temple to be united in marriage. Some of the characters: *Theseus: Kind and generous. He must enforce the law, but talks privately with Egeus and Demetrius to get them to relent. He appreciates the effort that goes into the play-within-a- play, and the sincerity of the ordinary people. He lets his imagination turn good people's sincere effort into a good performance. *Hippolyta: More literal-minded than Theseus. She cannot bring her imagination to consider a bad play good. But she notes that the lovers' tale of paranormal experience in the woods presents "great constancy" -- what paranormal investigators look for today. Like most of us, Hippolyta decides, "If they're all t...

Islam

Although some converted to Islam, Muhammad and his followers were persecuted by the leading Meccan authorities. After 13 years of preaching, Muhammad and the Muslims performed the Hijra ("emigration") to the city of Medina (formerly known as Yathrib) in 622. There, with the Medinan converts (Ansar) and the Meccan migrants (Muhajirun), Muhammad established his political and religious authority. Within years, two battles had been fought against Meccan forces: the Battle of Badr in 624, which was a Muslim victory, and the Battle of Uhud in 625, which ended inconclusively. Conflict with Medinan Jewish clans who opposed the Muslims led to their exile, enslavement or death, and the Jewish enclave of Khaybar was subdued. At the same time, Meccan trade routes were cut off as Muhammad brought surrounding desert tribes under his control. By 629 Mu...
