Why I came to study English essay

Why I came to study English Why I came to study English? Seems like a simple question, but it certainly made me think about it. Some of my friends have even said that majoring in English seems so boring and they constantly bombard me with questions about my future. That made me think about how exactly did I end up studying English? First of all, as a kid, I was so sure I would be a hairdresser or a teacher or a cook in the future. I am sure that almost every kid thinks the same, when all they have for inspiration are

industry. The development of mobile phones has made long-distance communication a matter of seconds. The mobile phone was invented in 1973 by Dr. Martin Cooper, a Motorola employee. On April 3, 1973, the first cell phone call was made. The caller was naturally, Dr. Cooper himself. Prior to the development of mobile phones, people used two-way radios to communicate while they were mobile. The idea behind two-way radios gave rise to the invention of mobile phones. During the 1940s, Motorola came up with the Walkie-Talkie followed by handheld two-way radios that operated on battery power. In 1947, Douglas Ring and W. Rae Young at Bell Labs introduced the idea of hexagonal cells for mobile phones. Ericsson came up with an automatic mobile phone system, which was released in Sweden in 1956. The drawback of this system was that the phones weighed 40 kg´s. Till 1970, mobile phones had to remain within their cell area and there

Thanksgiving

Topic No. 4 Thanksgiving In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. On this day Americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year. Thanksgiving is usually a family day, celebrated with big dinners. The first American Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth. The Puritans from England came to America because they were unappreciated. They were called the Pilgrims. They came to America on a ship called Mayflower. September was the worst season of the year for sea crossing. After 65 days they landed at Cape Cod. The Pilgrims suffered a great deal during their first winter, because they were poorly equipped and poorly trained. One spring morning an Indian came and introduced him in a friendly way. The Indian chief offered assistance to the pilgrims and the Indians thought the Pilgrims how to hunt, fish, and grow food

War on terror

War on Terror The War on Terror is an international military campaign led by the United States and the United Kingdom with the support of other NATO and non-NATO countries. Officially, the War on Terror label has not been used since Barack Obama came to office in 2009, but the war in Afghanistan continues. The campaign was launched in 2001 with the US/UK invasion of Afghanistan in response to the September 11 attacks. Since then, other operations have commenced, the largest being the War in Iraq, beginning with a 2003 invasion. Originally, it was waged against al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations with the purpose of eliminating them. The phrase War on Terror was first used by former US President George W. Bush

However, it is stopped to allow disabled or elderly passengers time to embark and disembark safely. The project was European with major components coming from six countries: the steel was supplied from the UK and fabricated in The Netherlands by the Dutch company Hollandia, the cables came from Italy, the bearings came from Germany, the spindle and hub were cast in the Czech Republic, the capsules were made by Poma in France, and the electrical components came from the UK. The then Prime Minister, Tony Blair opened it formally on 31 December 1999. However to the public it wasn´t opened until March 2000 because of technical problems. Since its opening, the Eye has become a major landmark and tourist attraction. It is operated by Merlin

The Saxons & Vikings

By the beginning of the 9th cent. Wessex had become the strongest. Wessex never again lost its supremacy. In 829 King Egbert was acknowledged by Kent, Mercia & Northumbria. This was the beginning of the united kingdom. King Egbert became 1st King of England. The clergy, royal warriors & officials supported the king's power. He granted them land and the right to collect dues from the peasants & hold judgement over them. Another important class developed the men of learning, came from the Christian Church. Nobody knows when christianity first reached Britain. Christianity came from 2 directions, Rome & Ireland. In 597 Pope Gregory the Great sent a group of missionaries under a monk Augustin to re-establish Christianity. Augustin went to Canterbury, the capital of Kent, where King Ethelbert had married Bertha, a Christian Frankish princess. Several ruling families accepted Christianity, but not ordinary people. Augustin became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in 601.

Oliver twist - kokkuvõte

She delivered a sickly child who had trouble breathing. The woman, without a word of who she was, died and left her new born boy, Oliver, to the drunken nurse that stood by. Chapter2: The State gave Oliver to Mrs. Mann who housed a number of orphaned children. Mrs. Mann took a large portion of the money given to her by the authorities for each child's food so Oliver grew up small and malnourished. On his ninth birthday, the town beadle, Mr. Bumble, came to collect Oliver and take him to the board for an interview. They told him he was to live with other wards of the state to become educated and learn a trade. Oliver did not mind this, but soon after he arrived, the state decided to implement a plan that would save money by feeding the people very little. After a time on this diet, the boys at the table chose Oliver to go ask the head cook for more gruel. Oliver did this, and was taken away

Prehistory, Saxon invasion and Celtic Kingdoms

000 BC. 50 000 BC in a milder Ice Age period Britain became habitable again. People from that time were the ancestors of the modern British. 10 000 BC ige age ended and Britain became inhabited by small groups of hunters who probably followed herds of deer. 5000BC Britain became an island and deer died out. 3000BC the Neolithic people came (probably from Spanish peninsula or even North African coast). They may be the forefathers of the people from Cornwall and Wales. The building of Stonehenge started around that time. 2400BC the 'Beaker' people arrived in Britain. They had better metal working skills and they soon became the leaders of the British society. They started building individual graves. 1300BC the farming society became more important than the henge society. 55BC the Romans arrived.

English letter to a penfriend, B2

Dear Chicken, Thank you for your letter! I’m sorry that you feel that way. Just got your letter today, so I apologise for any delay. I want to tell you that I’m here for you, and I will help you through this. While reading your letter, I came up with a few ideas that might help you. First of all, I want to tell you that you can always write me about these troublesome problems. I’m always more than happy to help you in anyway I can. It's also refreshing to see how you’re doing. It relieves me from the pressure that my school has placed on me. As I mentioned before, I came up with a couple of ideas on how to improve your school and home life. Firstly, I think you should go join a sport activity or something like that

benefits everyone in the society. It is similar to a pyramid scheme. The 3 main classes that held this structure together were lords, vassals and fiefs. There is a common saying from that time period as well - my vassals vassal is not my vassal. It meant that the vassal was only responsible for the person working directly under them and not for the person working under their worker. Then into the play also came division of labour and how to produce more than you can consume, so to gain profit. Corporations inside the cities were made and guilds were formed. It also had a key structure: Father who was head of the corporation and his family who also among other things had the right to vote, an understudy who learned the business and a disciple who worked as a servant for the house and learnt the basics on how to do the masters job. All of this fast development eventually lead to the alliance of cities.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore!" This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!" Merely this and nothing more

The latter is particularly interesting as a game played on a rectangular grass surface with a ball roughly equivalent to a softball today. Medieval football Despite some signs of the game we love today in the Ancient World, the true development of football came in Medieval Britain by and large, although there are signs of equivalents across Europe (the majority of which were exported). Known as Shrovetide football or Medieval football, the inception point has been claimed as the 3rd century after the defeat of the Romans, but the practice itself was first recorded in the 9th century as part of the Historia Britonum (you can see one or two of the surviving engravings of medieval football at the British Museum).
