The Winter Olympic Games are
a winter multi-sport event held
every four years. They feature

skating have been competed at
every Winter Olympics since

progressed. Some of these
events, such as luge, short track
speed skating, and freestyle
skiing have earned a permanent
spot on the Olympic programme.
The first Winter Olympics were held in
Chamonix, France in 1924. Many
countries have played home to the
Winter Olympics. France has been
host to the Games three times. The
United States has hosted the Games
four times, more than any other
country. Several countries including
Italy, Japan, Austria and Norway have
hosted the Games twice. The next
host city will be Vancouver, Canada in
2010. This will be the second time the
Games will be held in Canada.The
Games will then be hosted by Sochi,
Russia in 2014. This will be the first
time that Russia has hosted a Winter
Olympic Games.

Andrus Veerpalu (born February 8,
1971 in Pärnu) is an Estonian cross
country skier. On February 17, 2006 he
won his second Winter Olympics gold
medal (in 15 km cross country skiing; his
previous gold medal is from the Salt
Lake City games), becoming the fourth
Estonian to have won two Olympic gold
medals (Kristjan Palusalu, Erika
Salumäe and Kristina Smigun are the
first three). Veerpalu has also found
success at the FIS Nordic World Ski
Championships, winning a gold at 15 km
in 2009 at Liberec, 30 km in 2001 at
Lahti and a silver at 50 km in 1999 at
Ramsau. Veerpalu also became the
oldest world champion in history with his
victory at Liberec 2009.
Jaak Mae (born February 25, 1972)
is an Estonian cross-country skier
who has competed since 1994. He
won a bronze in the 15km event at
the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt
Lake City.
Mae won a silver medal in the 15km
event at the 2003 FIS Nordic World
Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme.
He has also finished 5th at the 2006
Winter Olympics and 5th at the FIS
Nordic World Ski Championships
2009.
Kristina Smigun-Vähi (born February
23, 1977 in Tartu) is an Estonian cross-
country skier. Her parents, Anatoli
Smigun and Rutt Rehemaa were both
prominent Nordic skiers. Kristina Smigun
is coached by her father.
On February 12, 2006, she won the
Winter Olympics gold medal for the 7.5
km + 7.5 km double pursuit, becoming
the first Estonian woman to win a medal
at the Winter Olympics. Four days later,
she won a second gold medal in the 10
km classical.
Smigun-Vähi has also found success at
the FIS Nordic World Ski
Championships, earning six medals.
This included one gold (2003: 5 km + 5
km double pursuit), three silvers (1999:
15 km, 2003: 10 km, 15 km), and two
bronzes (1999, 2003: both in 30 km).

Sports. Sports has a very old history. The ancient Olympic Games were the first big sports competitions. The history of the Olympic Games is linked with many myths referred to in ancient sources, but in the historic years their founder is said to be Oxylos whose descendant Ifitos later rejuvenated the Games. White has gone on to win many titles on his skateboard, most notably winning the overall title of Action Sports Tour Champion, as well as being the first person to compete in and win both the Summer and Winter X Games in two different sports. Following in his older brother's footsteps, White switched from skiing to snowboarding at age six, and by age seven he received his first sponsorship. White has participated in two Winter Olympics in his career. At both the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, White won gold in the snowboard halfpipe event. White has also participated in the Winter X Games, where he has won a medal every year since 2002. Petra Majdic Petra Majdic was born on December 22, 1979 in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia. She is an Olympic cross country skiing specilizing in the women's individual sprint discipline. Majdic is representing her home country of Slovenia in the 2010 Winter Olympics in .Vancouver, British Columbia Majdic has made 169 World Cup starts in her career, with 15 victories and 31 podiums to her credit. In her first start on the circuit on January 9, 1999, she finished 69th of 75 skiers in a 10 km cross country event held in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.
