Exposing the Human Condition in Antigone

When faced with the decision to obey the King or obey her heart, she says on page 23, in lines 86-90: "I will bury him myself./If I die for doing that, good:/I will stay with him, brother;/and my crime will be devotion." This decision, to bury her brother, was very heroic in that even though she knew death was at stake, she knew where her loyalties lied. On page 39, lines 560-575, Antigone stands up to her uncle and tells him to his face that he has disobeyed the Gods decrees. In line 562, 563, and 564 she says: "I did not intend to pay, before the gods,/for breaking these laws/because of my fear of one man and his principles." Antigone accuses Kreon of overstepping the laws of the gods, by relying on his own thinking. As is brought out later, Kreon never listened to other peoples advice until it was too late. In the above passage Antigone heroically faces up to the most powerful man, the King, knowing he could kill her in

Reflective Statement Antigone

Antigone and Creon, who both are motivated by their hubris and the need for glory. In the play, Antigone rebels against the rules set out by Creon, when she attempts to bury her brother even though it has been prohibited by the state. Antigone is sentenced with a death penalty, which is found unreasonable by many of the other members of the society. In the discussion we explored the nature of men and authority in comparison to the natural laws and traditions of the Gods. Sophocles expresses men as the all powerful and wonderful in his well-known "Ode to Man" in Antigone. A man "conquers all, taming with his techniques the prey that roam the cliffs and wild lairs, training the stallion, clamping the yoke across his shaggy neck, and the tireless mountain bull" (l.391-394)1, which portrays the audience all of the marvelous actions of men. At the same time, one common aspect that stands out in the midst of all the

Celtic Mythology / Keldi Mütoloogia

was not politically unified nor was there any substantial central source of cultural influence or homogeneity; as a result, there was a great deal of variation in local practices of Celtic religion (although certain motifs, for example the god Lugh, appear to have diffused throughout the Celtic world). Inscriptions to more than three hundred deities, often equated with their Roman counterparts, have survived, but of these most appear to have been genii locorum, local or tribal gods, and few were widely worshipped. However, from what has survived of Celtic mythology, it is possible to discern commonalities which hint at a more unified pantheon than is often given credit. The nature and functions of these ancient gods can be deduced from their names, the location of their inscriptions, their iconography, the Roman gods they are equated with, and similar figures from later bodies of Celtic mythology.

● Surmajärgsus ei olnud suure tähelepanu all, ennekõike sooviti olla õnnelik maises elus. Surnute hinged arvati minevat Allilma, kus neid ootab rõõmutu oleskelu.

Where I'm From - poem/luuletus

Where I'm From I'm not from a country of fortune and fame, I'm just from a group that thinks it's a game. I'm not from a place of emotional flow, But more from a place where nothing will show. I am from the seaside, I'm waiting for tide, The amount of their feelings that people will hide. I am from a country with a colorful past, "How long?" they said, "How long will it last?" Dark clouds sent by gods as they form in the sky, Like millions of people on the streets walking by. Now, imagine that people would become extinct, Their knowledge, their data all lost in a blink. But maybe our lives are not what they seem, Maybe, just maybe, it's all just a dream.

Capital Punishment should (not) be abolished

Capital Punishment should (not) be abolished Capital punishment has been an ancient way of punishment, which is thought to have started with blood feud and human sacrifices to gods. There are different points of views supporting or held against this sort of punishment. First of all, it is inhumane, primitive and brutal way of revenge, which is contradiction to the basic values of Christian Europe. What is more, it stands in the way of society progressing morally. With this sort of punishment county sets itself at the same level as the criminal and this may increase aggressiveness and lover the value of human life.

Antiik jumalad ja nende kujutamine kunstis- Athena

Antiikjumalad ja nende kujutamine kunstis Athena-Minerva Jumala lugu Athena (Minerva) oli neitsilik kreeka jumalanna, Zeusi tütar, sündis raseda Metise allaneelanud Zeusi peast: pärast seda, kui Hephaistos oli peavalu kannatava Zeusi kolju kirvega lõhestanud, astus Athena sealt välja täies relvastuses (kiiver, oda, kilp, aigis-rinnakilp). Ateena linna kaitsejumalannana. How has the nature of fame changed?

How has the nature of fame changed? Imagine two celebrities standing in front of you: Audrey Hepburn and Kim Kardashian? Is there anything different in the way they are or how they became famous? It’s no surprise that the way celebrities present themselves has changed immeasurably since the Golden Age of Hollywood. Back in the day, celebrities were presented as incomparably glamorous, flawless beings, closer to gods than humans. Fame was controlled not by the famous and certainly not by the audience, but by the owners of the media. The lives of the rich and the famous used to be mysterious and even inexplicable. It was so foreign and artificial a construct that we thought that fame made you special. The rise of reality TV, however, was a major step in the changing nature of celebrity. “Normal people” became stars overnight. The dominance of smartphones and social

Towns in Roman Britain

Aqueducts were bridges for bringing water to the towns. Only the rich had water piped to their houses; everyone else used water from public fountains. The only toilets were public lavatories, which were built around the town and connected to underground sewers. What could you find in most Roman towns? Most towns would also have shops as well as the forum. At one end of the forum was a large building called the basilica. There were temples too where the Roman gods were worshipped. What were Roman buildings made of? Buildings were made of stone and brick. They were so well built that we have been able to excavate many Roman buildings and even towns. What were the names of the Roman towns? The three largest were London, Colchester and St. Albans. Colchester was their main town. The Romans called towns with different names to what we know them as today.

Aphrodite

Reading task

many things right that when it goes astray (which happens with more and more frequency as it goes along) you kind of wish it hadn't tried in the first place. Unless your last name is Harryhausen, you shouldn't really maneuver Greek mythology, and you definitely don't need to use it as a source from some Shrek-inspired collection of tired pop culture riffs. Yet that's exactly what this Chris Columbus helmed half-success does. We begin by learning that the fabled gods of old do exist, and that Zeus is especially mad at brother Poseidon. Seems the head hocho's magical lightning bolt has been stolen, and each accuses the other of using the crime as a means of starting an all out Olympian war. Zeus specifically blames Poseidon's son, Percy Jackson, and soon, all the various creatures of myth - harpies, centaurs, minotaurs, and hydras -- are after the unsuspecting teen.

Roman invasion

The Romans spoke and wrote in Latin and many of our words are based on Latin words. The Calendar the calendar we use today is more than 2,000 years old? It was started by Julius Caesar, a Roman ruler. It is based on the movement of the earth around the sun, and so is called the 'solar calendar.' The solar calendar has 365 days a year, and 366 days every leap year, or every fourth year. The names of our months are taken from the names of Roman gods and rulers. The month 'July,' in fact, is named after Julius Caesar himself! Laws and a legal system The laws and ways we determine what to do with someone who is accused of breaking a law came originally from the Roman Empire. The Census The Roman Empire was huge and included millions of people living over a large area. How did they keep track of all these people? Easy! They counted them! The Roman Empire began the practice of taking a

Maalikunstis sai peamiseks ideaaliks harmoonilise kompositsiooni loomine.

2. The ancient Olympic Games The first recorded Olympic Games took place in 776. B.C. at Olympia but the city may have functioned as a meeting place for worship and other political practices many years earlier. The city is located in western Greece. The games were held every four years. It is also presumed that such competitions pleased the spirits of the dead and were organized as part of funeral ceremonies for important people. Later games became part of religious festivals of honouring the gods but mostly they honoured the king of the gods Zeus. The ancient stadium in Olympia could accommodate more than 40,000 spectators. The only event in the first 13 games was the stadion which is a running-race of 192 metres. As the years passed, longer running races and other types of competition became a part of the games wrestling, the pentathlon, boxing and chariot-racing. The pentathlon was a combination of long jump, running, discus, and javelin throwing and wrestling

searching for information, listening to music, watching films and TV series and online shopping. One of the oldest type of entertainment is the theatre. It is a word taken from the Ancient Greeks. It means Seeing Place. A typical stage-play depends on 3 things: actions seen, words spoken and people watching and listening. The first theatres were built by the ancient Greeks. They were outdoors. There were no plays. Songs sung by a chorus told stories about gods. There were also dances. Today the interior of a modern theatre looks different. The two main parts of a modern theatre are the stage and the hall. The hall is separated from the stage by the orchestra. At the sides of the stage are the wings. A curtain covers the stage. The seats on the floor are known as stalls. The raised back part of the ground floor is the pit, the small compartments are the boxes. Then follow the dress circle, the balconies and finally the gallery.

Essay about NewZealand and Australia

They both had quite a savage way of life (savage to our minds) and invaders tried to bring them out of it. Both the people had their land invaded and they had to cope with the difficulties followed. They also used to gather food in a similar way. I would still say that the Aborigines were more spiritual people, their own religion and land played a more important role in their interpretation of the world. Maori people were of course spiritual as well and had different gods but my opinion is still that they tried to adapt more to the way of life of the British. On the other hand I think that the Maori have a much better status today than the Aborigines, they are considered to be more a part of the community than the latter. Also the Maoris have adjusted to the way of life of the world today but the Aborigines hang more on to their recent way of life. So it can be said that the Maori and the Aborigines were people of the same fate but still

Puritanism in John Winthrop "A model of Christian Charity"

FLRG.01.193 Heidi Järvpõld 01.01.2015 Puritanism in A model of Christian Charity A modell of Christian charity, also known as A City on a Hill, is the kind of Puritan literature example that can fade the suspicious reader’s doubts in the Puritan main ideology and beliefs. At least, this is how it seemed to me. This sermon can be seen as a gateway to the Puritan society’s attitude and mindset as it is one of the most classical examples of the Puritan era literature. Although John Winthrop was the leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was filled with corrupted chiefs, he vigorously emphasizes in his writings the unity of community, love of othe...
