Early Scottish history is often mythologised because its earliest records are almost always written by others (for example Tacitus). 2. Directly and indirectly, what did the Hadrian Wall represent? It represented directly the border of the Roman colonies in Britain and indirectly the ‘’end of the world’’, where true (Roman) civilization ended and savagery began. A History Of Scotland - Episode 1 - The Last Of The Free (2/6) 1. Why shouldn`t we call the Pictish society barbarian? valued by both Native and non-Native Americans. It remains a distinctive feature of Navajo history and culture. Basketry Navajos are also known for their basket work. They believe the First Man and First Woman made baskets for ceremonial purposes. Each part of the basket has a very distinct meaning. Like Navajo textiles, only women generally make baskets. Some Navajo baskets have specific symbols and colors, such as a red design to represent darkness and clouds, and a black triangular layer to represent all of the Holy People. The four Sacred Mountains are represented by a black triangle. Different tribes use different materials, weaving techniques, basket shapes, and characteristic patterns. Sandpainting Traditional sandpainting, considered a sacred art, is important aspect of Navajo art and culture. Sandpainting consists of images and patterns created with colored sand.
officials for sailing without a flag or register. Australia, which was the most important trading partner for NZ had British navigation laws which ruled that every ship must carry an official certificate detailing construction, ownership and nationality of the ship. The problem was that during that period of time, NZ was not yet a colony ofGreat Britan, thats why the NZ-built ships could not sail under a British flag or register. Without a flag to represent the new nation, trading ships and their valuable cargoes would continue to be seized (held by the Australian customs (toll) The Australians called for signing a legislation to remove any obstacles to New Zealand's increasing trade with the ports in Australia. While a temporary licence was granted in August 1831 allowing the Sir George Murray to return to Sydney for trading, the need for an official flag to mark New Zealand-built ships was clear. 10. What are the Commonwealth Realms? A Commonwealth realm is any one of 16 sovereign states within the Commonwealth of Nations that each have Elizabeth II as their respective monarch. The realms, though completely sovereign, are united in that they share one monarch as their own. 11. How many peaople are there in the Commonwealth? 2 billion citizens = 1/3 of the world's population 12. What is the flag like? What do the symbols represent? The flag consists of the Commonwealth symbol in gold on a blue field. The symbol centres on a globe, representing the global nature of the Commonwealth and the breadth of its membership. The globe is surrounded by 61 radiating, approximately quadrilateral, spears, which form a 'C' for 'Commonwealth'. The number of spears does not represent the number of member states (there have never been 61 members); instead, the large number
when it actually does not. The song refers to someone in a relationship, blinded by love and has no other option but to "bleed love" for a loved one. ,,American Woman" is originally written by a Canadian band The Guess Who but was differently interprated by Lenny Kravitz in 1999. Some say the ,,American Woman" refers to a Statue of Liberty or has something to do with anti-war movements in 1970's but the actual meaning of this particular song is still unknown. To sum up, these two artist represent various styles of music. Leonas music is more emotional, having an edgy side to it, while Lennys music is more of a ,,retro" style. How does the music of both of them impact us? I believe Leona makes us think more about love and future but Lenny makes us think about the past because of the scent of retro in his music. Painting: The subject of the painting is the practice of 18th century slave traders who would throw the dead and dying human 'cargo' overboard during the middle passage in the Atlantic Ocean. Turner was inspired by two sources: by the Zong Massacre of slaves and by lines from James Thomson's The Seasons (The Zong Massacre was the name given to the mass-killing of African slaves that took place in 1781 on the Zong). The violent power of the sea and the strange sea creatures represent the forces of nature punishing the guilty. The painting was widely admired for its use of colour and the way in which sea and sky merge around the distant ship. In the lower portion of the painting, hands of enslaved Africans can be seen still shackled(aheldatud). Turner makes a particularly effective contrast between distant and near views in The Slave Ship. The painting is currently on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, USA.

Why do the pilgrims go on the pilgrimage? Whose grave do they visit? People see a pilgrimage as a cure for sick relatives or friends and you of all your sins. People go on pilgrimages to seek inspiration and to show that they are willing to devote themselves to god and to prove that they believe in him and that they love him. How many pilgrims did the narrator meet at the Tabard Inn in Southwark? 29 How does the narrator describe his role? Chaucer's pilgrim narrators represent a wide spectrum of ranks and occupations. Royal Family. The British Empire did conquer many places but they did not do it just to help the people. They did it to get the resources and workers for the least amount of money. The ,,helping" was just a smokescreen. Australia for example was nothing more than a dumping ground for criminals, thieves - the unwanted. Some part of those ,,flag bearers" still hold a grudge for it. The current monarchy has changed into constitutional monarchy. The role of the queen or the king is to represent the nation; actual ruling of the nation is in the hands of the parliament. It is such an old tradition and a national symbol that it should continue on.

begins with the lines /Talking in bed ought to be easiest, Lying together there goes back so far/. At first it gives the reader an idea that he is talking about two lovers, but actually he is talking about England and USA. He describes the darkness that is creeping up. In my opinion he is talking about USA, which is beginning to creep up on England or on Europe. And because of that England is becoming a less dominant and more isolated place. He is saying that intimacy is dying and that may represent the globalization. Another political poem I really enjoyed is ´´Homage To a Government´´. Larkin says that next year they are going to bring all the soldiers home, because they (citizens) want the money for them selves. And that their children do not know it's a different country, because they did not achieve anything in the war. But at least they can leave their children some money. I think that Larkin means that the troops are going to be brought home from Vietnam
"Fame is a Fickle Food" by Emily Dickinson Analysis Liisi Pajula In her poem "Fame is a Fickle Food", Emily Dickinson quite clearly compares fame to something very changing and uncertain. She compares it to food, which at first seems tempting, but is actually venomous and deadly. From the very beginning of the poem, we get the idea that Dickinson has her mind set against fame and those, who run after it. With using words such as 'fickle' and 'shifting' she very successfully demonstrates that fame is not permanent and should thus be handled with care. Dickinson also says that true fame is something one can achieve only once ("Whose table once a Guest, but not / The second time is set"). She goes on to explain that after fame has faded, its not too pleasant insides become visib...
the tree in the picture plane from Japanese printmaking. Vincent was a fan of Japanese art especially of the woodblock print genre Ukiyo-e and influence of Ukiyo-e can be seen in this famous work which was held in high esteem by the artist. Because he suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions and though he worried about his mental stability, he often neglected his physical health, did not eat properly and drank heavily. The Japanese paintings represent Van Gogh's search for serenity and helped him with his depression. In early 1890, Van Gogh’s brother Theo had a son who was named Vincent after the artist. The painting was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a baby son, Vincent Willem. He was very close to his brother and he thought to symbolize new life in the flowers of the almond tree for the birth of baby Vincent. In the letter announcing the new arrival, Theo wrote: ‘As we told you, we’ll name him

Revolutionary ideas was Jacques-Louis David, who, with his paintings, perpetuated The French Revolution from the Republican point of view. His art was mostly tightly connected to the main figures, events and ideas of the French Revolution. David had more than 5 pieces of art that captured the essence of the Revolution. His paintings represented political ethics, current ideals and foundations. Furthermore, the wider public was enthralled with his ability to represent brotherhood and patriotism while using the neoclassicistic style. (Friedlaender, 1952, p.16) Jacques-Louis David was born in Paris in 1748 as the son of an ironmonger. The leader of the French classical movement studied with the artist Joseph-Marie Vien. Doing totally nonsensical art can be good when it's made with heart and One really believes in in. For example Lady Gaga has more fans than the president of the United States. The word weird is identical to her, and that is what makes her special as she knows exactly how to represent it perfectly. But when you look at our ,,artist" Pille Neeve, who is totally idiotic and most of the times doing absolutely nonsense just to be special among the other Estonian artists, it makes me sad. And often sick also. What do fine food, beautiful art, and soulful music have in common? The thing that makes them good, of course the quality ! When you loose this main ingredient, you can't make a wonderful recipe.
