First snow

It was unusually hot in my small bedroom when I woke up. As I looked at the clock, it was only 7.30 in the morning and I was still dead tired from my last night`s birthday party. I didn´t feel any strenght left in my muscles but nevertheless I walked across my bedroom to turn the radiator down. That was strange. The heat wasn´t on. When I opened the window to let in some cooling autumn air I saw something slowly falling from the sky. It was too early for the first snow and also the weather was also unusually warm. I opened the window even more to get rid of that suffocating air stuck inside the room but that made it even worse, all the breathable air seemed to fly out. Next, I quickly closed the window and rushed to the bathroom where I was about to take a refreshing cold shower. As I put my head under the cooling water, I realized that something was wrong. The water looked dark gray and seemed to have clogged up the pipes

Book report/review "The Snow Child"

The Snow Child English The Snow Child is a book by Eowyn Ivey. The author was inspired by the Russian fairytale Snegurotska while writing her debut novel. story takes place in Alaska 1920's and it talks about a couple, Jack and Mabel, who decide to make a snow girl out of snow. The next day the snow girl has become a real human being. Before Jack and Mable were living in Alaska they were living in Pennsylvania. They moved to Alaska to get away from the family, because they had lost their first child. It was hard for Mabel to recover there, because there were children around all the time. In Alaska they were living a very isolated life - no neighbours, no friends. In addition, at that time there did not exist such things as food shops, so they had to hunt all their food

Estonian climate in winter-time.

Estonian climate in winter-time. In Estonia, winter climate is very variable. Some year, it could be very cold outside, but some year it could be so warm you may wear your autumn clothes in winter. Some year it could snow so much, that you can't even get out of the house, because there's too much snow in front of your door and some year it may not snow for at least half of the winter-time. But no worries, mostly the temperature may go below -30 and because of the cold, students are absent from schools. The absent students mess up the whole classes program, because then it takes more time to study some subjects and teachers have a lot more work to do. I think, that when students skip school because of the bad weather, teachers should put homework and the work that should

My ideal house

My ideal house I would like to live in a place where there are some mountains with snow on top of them and a sea nearby because i like beaches and mountains. My house would be in the middle of them, so i could see the sea from one side and the mountains from the other side of the house. The house would have two floors and a basement because that's all i need. On the first floor, there would be the living room with a big tv and some antique furniture, the kitchen, also with antique style oven and etc. A bathroom with a

The climate in Estonia

However, due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream, the weather in Estonia is considerably milder than the continental climate characteristic of the same latitude. The temperature in the summer months (June September) is typically 15ºC...18ºC and in winter 4ºC...5ºC. Estonian weather offers many surprises. Temperatures may fluctuate by 20ºC. In the early morning the thermometer might read 12ºC and by afternoon it may already be 10ºC. Although it doestn't always snow in winter, there tends to be about 10cm of snow on the ground consistently from late December through to the beginning of March. Often, at the end of October till the end of November, when it is quite cold there already, it hails. Hailstones are almost as big as pin's head. It very often sleets in winter because of too warm temperature. Snow melts before it reaches the ground. Sometimes, in the middle of October, you can see coat of frost on the ground in early morning. ICE AGE The earth is very old. During its long history there have been many changes in climate. Between one and two million years ago one of these changes took place the great Ice Age began. It grew colder in the Far North. More snow fell in the winter than could melt away in the summer. The snow grew deeper and deeper. It changed to solid ice. As more snow fell, the ice grew thicker. It began to move. Great sheets of moving ice, or glaciers, were formed. The edges of the sheets were pushed outward. At last the ice covered most of what is now Canada. And it spread southward into what is now the United States. The ice was probably a mile deep in places. It moved over hills and valleys, rivers and forests. It moved slowly perhaps only a foot a day. Millions of plants were buried by the ice. Many animals moved south

Tundra loomad

These North American reindeer became known as caribou. Although they are called by different names, they are both considered to be a single species. Unlike deer, both the male and female have antlers. The antlers of the male are long, branched and massive, and they are a little flattened at the ends. The antlers of the female are much shorter, simpler and more slender and irregular. Their large, spreading hooves support the animal in snow in the winter and marshy tundra in the summer. Reindeer are also great swimmers and use their feet as paddles. They can also lower their metabolic rate and go into a semi-hibernation when conditions get very harsh. When it looks like there is nothing to eat on the winter tundra, reindeer will scrape the snow away with their wide feet or antlers and eat lichens, dried sedges and small shrubs. In the summer they the will eat

How to avoi road accidents

Defensive driving means letting others go ahead-not defending your position in traffic. Avoid the urge to be a vigilante ("Oh yeah? Let me show you what it's like to be cut off like that!") Accept the fact that someone is always going to think they're in more of a hurry than you. These are the drivers you want to move far away from, not to 'teach them a lesson.' 3 3 Try to avoid driving in bad weather. Always keep your windshield wipers going in the rain or snow. Defrost your windshield to keep it from fogging up. Turn on your headlights to help others to see you--this is also the law in some states. If possible, try to avoid driving in the snow at all, especially if your car is rear wheel drive. If you must go out in the snow, drive extra slow, use the brakes and gas pedal gently, and maintain an increased stopping distance. 4 4 Never get into a car with a drunk driver. It is always best to have a "designated driver"

(where people are called the Yupik people). In some areas, Inuit people are called "Eskimos" however many Inuit find this term offensive. The word "Inuit" means "the people" in the Inuktitut language. Inuit Homes In the tundra, where Inuit communities are found, there are not many building materials. No trees grow in the tundra so houses can not be made from wood unless it is transported from elsewhere. However, during a large part of the year, the cold part, there is a lot of snow in the tundra. And it turns out that snow can be a very good construction material. In the winter, Inuit lived in round houses made from blocks of snow called "igloos". In the summer, when the snow melted, Inuit lived in tent-like huts made of animal skins stretched over a frame. Although most Inuit people today live in the same community year-round, and live in homes built of other construction materials that have to be imported, in the past Inuit would migrate between a summer and winter

Tundra: There aren't many different species of insects in the tundra, but black flies, deer flies, mosquitoes and "no-see-ums" can make the tundra a miserable place to be in the summer. Mosquitoes can keep themselves from freezing by replacing the water in their bodies with a chemical called glycerol. Polar desert: All the wildlife is connected with sea, because there is very little food on land. Vast colonies of seabirds can be found nesting on the cliffs of this ecoregion. Images of Chile

Republic of Chile Republic of Chile is a country in South America occupying a long and narrow coastal strip wedged between the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Chile's unusual, ribbon-like shape -- 4,300 kilometres long and on average 175 kilometres wide -- has given it a hugely varied climate, ranging from the world's driest desert -- the Atacama -- in the north, through a Mediterranean climate in the centre, to a snow-prone Alpine climate in the south, with glaciers, fjords and lakes. The Pacific forms the country's entire western border, with a coastline that stretches over 6,435 kilometres. Chile expanded in the late 19th century, when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands. Prior to the com...

They mean something like: "Am I right?" or "Do you agree?" They are very common in English. The basic structure is: + - Positive statement, negative tag? Snow is white, isn't it? - + Negative statement, positive tag? You don't like me, do you? Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub

Location: Temperate forests are typical of all European continent, the Eastern region of Asia (in special, Chinese and Japan) and North America. Also are finded in tempered areas of South America. Climate: The average temperature in temperate forests is 50° F. Summers are mild, and average about 70° F, while winter temperatures are often well blow freezing. The average yearly precipitation is 30-60 inches. This precipitation falls throughout the year, but in the winter it falls as snow. There are four seasons in this biome, with warm summers and cold winters, often snowy. In autumn, the leaves change color and fall from the trees. The leaves decay on the forest floor, so the soil is very rich. Because of this, and because of the long growing season, many deciduous forests have been cut down for farming purposes. Plants: Trees of this biome include hardwoods such as maple, oak, hickory, and beech. There are often

Impressionism - Erinevused maailmakunstist

Kunstnikud: 1. Claude Monet’ teosed: Impression, Sunrise Woman with a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son The Water Lily Pond Talle meelids kujutada päiksetõuse, lilli, inimesi kuid samuti sildu. Ta kasutas väga harva rõõmsaid toone. 2. Auguste Renoir teosed: Luncheon of the Boating Party Bal du moulin de la Galette Dance at Bougival Ta käsitles peaaegu ainult inimesi ja kuidas nad midagi teevad. 3. Alfred Sisley teoesed: Snow at Louveciennes The Bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne Flooding at Port-Marly Tema temaatikaks olid ilusad vaated erinev...

Temperate deciduous forest -Well-defined seasons with a distinct winter characterize this forest biome. Moderate climate and a growing season of 140-200 days during 4-6 frost-free months distinguish temperate forests. Temperature varies from -15° C to 25° C. Precipitation (750-1500 mm) is distributed evenly throughout the year. Temperate grassland- Semiarid, continental climates of the middle latitudes typically have between 25 cm and 50 cm of precipitation a year. Much of this falls as snow, serving as reservoir of moisture for the beginning of the growing season. Warm to hot summers are experienced, depending on latitude. In the winter, grassland temperatures can be as low as -40° C, and in the summer it can be as high 20° C. There are two real seasons: a growing season and a dormant season. The growing season is when there is no frost and plants can grow (which lasts from 100 to 175 days). During the dormant (not growing) season nothing can grow because it's too cold. Taiga-

Viljandi

fishermen and people who enjoy recreational sports. A hiking path runs around the lake and it can be used for recreational sports all year round. Since the year 1928, a run around Lake Viljandi has taken place on the first day of May every year. Tennis courts, cafes, playgrounds, diving towers, boat rental and catamaran trips are available by the lake. In winter, people can enjoy a snow park and test their skills at snow-tubing. Flag and coat of arms Viljandi's flag is a simple light blue over white. I don't know the significance of the colours (if any), but they are probably derived from the coat of arms. The arms are a white (and golden) flower on a blue field. Trepimägi The stairs of Trepimägi, built during the turn of the century to improve the connection between the town and the lake, start right from beside the Town Hall. There are five flights and 158 steps.

10 days of my life Personal diary Student:Anton Stseglakov Teacher:Evelin Pähn School:Haapsalu Gümnaasium Grade:10b Haapsalu 2008 First snow in 2008-23 november On 23 November the first snow of year 2008 was falling down from the sky all day long. Snowdrift was caused by strong wind, and it was very interesting to look how everything was going white. It had been a long time since I saw snow, so I was looking forward to see it.But I didn't expect it to come down in such huge quantity. I could sit behind the window for hours, observing the power of nature. It made me forget everything negative I felt that time and gave me an unforgetable memorial.

such as Canada, the northern United States, Scandinavia and Russia. History European immigrants brought various versions of hockey: like games to Canada, such as the Irish sport of hurling, the closely related Scottish sport of shinty, and versions of field hockey played in England. Where necessary, these seem to have been adapted for icy conditions; for example, a colonial Williamsburg newspaper records hockey being played in a snow storm in Virginia. Early paintings show "shinney", an early form of hockey with no standard rules, being played in Nova Scotia in Canada. Jane Austeni "Emma" ja "Persuasion"

Knightley has nothing but respect for Robert. Ensuing events convince Emma that Harriet and Mr. Elton are developing a mutual regard, and she takes pride in the apparent success of her endeavor, at the same time affirming that she herself will never marry. For the Christmas holidays Mr. and Mrs. John Knightley, respectively the brother of George Knightley and the sister of Emma, come from London with their five children to visit the Woodhouses. On December 24, which proves to be a bad day of snow, all of them, including George Knightley and Mr. Elton, go for a dinner with the Westons. There discussion turns to Frank Churchill, Weston's handsome, polished son by a former marriage (Frank had taken his uncle's name upon going to live with him) but a son who has never been seen in Highbury. John Knightley in particular thinks it oddly improper that Frank has not yet called on his newly remarried father, even though Frank lives some distance away in Yorkshire with the Churchills
