Tallinn

5000 years old. In 1050 the first fortress was built on Tallinn Toompea.[3] In 1285 the city became the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League. Medieval Tallinn enjoyed a strategic position at the crossroads of trade between Western and Northern Europe and Russia. On 24 February 1918, the Independence Manifesto was proclaimed in Tallinn, followed by Imperial German occupation and a war of independence with Russia. On 2 February 1920, the Tartu Peace Treaty was signed with Soviet Russia, wherein Russia acknowledged the independence of the Estonian Republic. Tallinn became the capital of an independent Estonia. After World War II started, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1940, and later occupied by Nazi Germany from 1941–44. After Nazi retreat in 1944, it was occupied by the USSR again. After annexation into the Soviet Union, Tallinn became the capital of the Estonian SSR.

Strategies of creating a dominant party – the case of UR

University of Tartu Faculty of Social Sciences and Education Institute of Government and Politics Marie Allikmaa The strategies of creating a dominant party the case of United Russia Tartu 2011 After the collapse of USSR in 1991, many observers expected Russia to develop into a competitive party system. Yet, the reality quickly challenged this view. The developments of party politics in post-Soviet Russia have accurately been described in terms of a pendulum effect, as in the 2000s, Russia's party system did finally begin to take for, but with a remarkable twist. Following the break of one-party rule, Russia's party system became strongly fragmented - during the 1995 parliamentary elections, 43 parties competed for popular votes (McFault 1996: 90)

Why did Russian civil war breake out in 1918

Why did Russian civil war breake out in 1918? The Russian Civil War was to tear Russia apart for three years, between 1918 and 1921. The civil war occurred because after November 1917, many groups had formed that opposed Lenin's Bolsheviks. These groups included monarchists, militarists, and, for a short time, foreign nations. Collectively, they were known as the Whites while the Bolsheviks were known as the Reds. But why did it really breake out? There were three reasons why Civil War broke out in Russia in 1918.The first reason

A limestone cliff runs through the city. It is exposed, for instance, at Toompea and Lasnamäe. However, Toompea is not a part of the cliff, but a separate hill. Coastline is 46 kilometres long. The highest point of Tallinn, at 64 meters above the sea level, is situated in the district of Nõmme, in the south-west of the city. The first human steps, that archeologists found, are about 5000 years old. Tallinn`s first fortress was built in Toompea, in 1050. As an important port for trade between Russia and Scandinavia, it became a target for the expansion of the Teutonic Knights and the Kingdom of Denmark during the period of Northern Crusades in the beginning of the 13th century when Christianity was forcibly imposed on the local population. Danish rule of Tallinn and Northern Estonia started in 1219. In 1285 the city became the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League - a military alliance of German-dominated cities inNorthern Europe. The Danes sold Tallinn along with their other

Estonian War of Independence

Estonian War of Independence During World War I the greatest colonial power in Europe the Russian Empire seized to exist. On its ruins the formerly enchained nations founded their own states. Among them was the Estonian Republic, officially declared on February 24, 1918. When Germany surrendered to the Western Allies on November 11, 1918 a strategic vacuum arose in Eastern Europe. The new rulers of Russia the Bolsheviks decided to use it as a proper moment to re-conquer their lost territories. The ultimate goal was international communist revolution and Germany was the first standing on their way. Thus on November 13, 1918 the Government of Soviet Russia denounced peace with Germany. On November 16 the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, Jukums Vacietis, gave orders to start a massive attack on a long front from the Gulf of Finland to the Ukraine.

5%. Such change has been fostered by production methods that have quickly become more modern and more varied. Several producers hope to soon enter the EU market with their production. Part 2 Light industry yields a highly varied output from cotton fabrics to clothing and footwear. The fastest production growth can be witnessed in the enterprises of mechanical engineering and metalwork and chemical industries which give more added value. A widespread preconception, especially in Russia, holds that the Estonian economy depends largely on Russian transit. The reality is different -- freight traffic between Russia and the rest of the world is an important source of profit for Estonian ports but the role of transit in the Estonian economy has been consistently decreasing. Slightly more than 70% of the freight flow of the ports and 57% of the rail freight is connected with transit. Such shares are constantly diminishing as Russian oil flow goes through her own ports on an

Some people say that popular British-American traditions are destroying Estonian culture

Some people say that popular British-American traditions are destroying Estonian culture Always people have been interested about different cultures and I think, it's normal and good because it shows people want to know new things, improve their skills and widen their horizon. I chose this topic because I mostly agree with this. First either way is Estonian culture a mix of different cultures. Different countries like Germany and Russia have influenced our cultur e. For example Seto people have polyphonic folk music because of Russia, rest of Estonia don't have it. Secondly I think nowadays it's normal that people take over some things in different cultures because we have globalization. For example people increasingly celebrate Halloween in Estonia. I believe because of things like that people say that British-American traditions are destroying.

Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria

The crowd jumped on Princip and he was arrested by the police. At the same time the car sped to the Governor's residence to get medical help. Unfortunately, Sofie was dead before they arrived and the Archduke died a few minutes later. The Austria-Hungary government saw the assassination as a direct attack on the country. They believed that the Serbians had helped the Bosnian terrorists in the attack. They made harsh demands on the Serbians which the Serbians rejected. At the same time, Russia began to mobilize their army to help protect Serbia. When Serbia rejected the demands, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. A few days later, Germany declared war on Russia to help its ally Austria-Hungary. Then France began to mobilize to help its ally Russia, and Germany followed by declaring war on France. World War I had begun.

subjugate the Baltics and convert the local pagans to Christianity whether they wanted to or not. The Danes improved the fortifications and expanded the town, which became part of the Hanseatic League, a trading organization of a hundred northern cities. The Danes sold Tallinn to the Livonan Order, a branch of the Teutonic Knights, in 1346. The Swedes came next in 1561. Tallinn weathered plague and the Great Northern War and became part of Russia in 1710. In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia. Independence didn’t last long, however, and the fledgling nation fell first to the Nazis and then the Soviets during World War II. Despite all this conquering, Tallinn’s historic core has survived remarkably intact. Much of the 14th century city wall still stands, including a couple of stretches where you can climb the narrow spiral staircases of the towers and end

Estonian Independence Day

On February 24, 1989, the red flag of Soviet Estonia was replaced by the blue-black-white Estonian national flag on Toompea and since that time the Independence Day has been celebrated as a public holiday again. This year Estonia will celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the declaration of the state independence. A Quest for Independence For centuries, the Estonian people dreamed of establishing a state free of foreign domination. The 1917 revolution and the generally unstable situation in Russia created the opportunity for Estonia to gain its independence. The impetus for independence was provided by the National Front, Estonia's main ideological movement, which based its ideas on US President Woodrow Wilson's principle of self-determination. On April 8, 1917, Estonian organisations and military personnel totalling 40 000 held a demonstration in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) in support of self-government of Estonia. The

How to Make Tourism in Tallinn Profitable

Europe. Here are such attractions as the Medieval Old Town, Kadriorg Park and Rusalka monument. These are the main places people usually want to visit. So, we must develop our tourism system. For example, make up some journey programmes with elements of the Estonian tales. That certainly attracts much more tourists in Tallinn. Moreover, Tallinn has the good benefit in its geographical location. Estonia is like a bridge or gate between Europe and Russia. And Tallinn is the heart of Estonia its capital. Estonians could get some profits from such situation, but for some unknown reasons they did not do that still. The only thing we need to solve this question - is to get on well with Russia. Our two countries, as we are neighbours, could sign an agreement, which would let youngsters to go to study abroad as the exchange students. This point can improve not only tourism, but population ageing problem as well.

Arkady Shilkloper

And he does so with extraordinary ease and musicality. I think maybe nobody ever told him "Jazz playing on horn is very difficult, and probably not natural" or perhaps the phrase does not translate into Russian. I'd walk on a camel for a mile to hear this guy. ''Jazz Times Magazine wrote:“His control of the instrument, and his blowing creativity have set a new standard, even Julius Watkins, his idol never produced such results.” Arkady Shilkloper was born in 1956, in Moscow, Russia. He began to study alto horn at the age of six and switched to French horn in 1967. At the age of eleven he entered the Moscow Military Music School. One of most unusual Russian musicians, Arkady plays French horn, flugelhorn, alphorn and many more wind instruments. From 1978 to 1985 he was a member of the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre. With this world-famous orchestra and as a member of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from 1985 to 1989, he undertook numerous worldwide concert tours.

Estonia

"linn" in English meaning both "cities" and "towns". More than 70% of the population lives in towns. History • Estonia was settled near the end of the last glacial era, beginning from around 8500 BC. Before the German invasions in the 13th century proto-Estonians of the Ancient Estonia worshipped the spirits of nature. Since the Northern Crusades Estonia became a battleground for centuries where Denmark, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Poland fought their many wars over controlling the important geographical position of the country as a gateway between East and West. Being conquered by Danes and Germans in 1227, Estonia was ruled initially by Denmark in the north, by the Livonian Order, an autonomous part of the Monastic state of the Teutonic Knights and Baltic German ecclesiastical states of the Holy Roman Empire. From 1418–1562 the whole of Estonia was part of the Livonian Confederation
