Triinu: “The Notorious Prisoners of the Tower”

Built in 1078, has been used as a fortress, Royal Palace , a prison, the home for Crown Jewels. The first prisoner was Ranulf Flambard in 1100. The only woman tortured in the Tower was Anne Askew. Guy Fawkes was prisoned 5th November 1605, hung in 1607. Walter Raleigh was knighted, married without queen ´s permission . Last prisoners were in the Tower in 1952.

Rita : “ Alexander Fleming

Was a pharmacologist, has graduated 6 schools, studied anti-bacterial agents, found Lysozyme accidentally in 1922 and penicillin , which changed the world, in 1928. Won Nobel Prize in 1945. Has been married twice, first wife was a trained nurse. He died in 1955 at home because of a heart attack. He had 1 child .

Liis: “The Phantom of the Opera

A.L. Webber is knighted, started writing musicals in 1965, owns 7 theatres and has written 13 musicals. The story is based on a book. The musical was first staged at Sydmonton, at the home of A.L Webber. The main actors were Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. There have been 65 000 performances and over 80 million people have seen it. There was a film made in 2004. The play consists of 2 acts . The main characters are The Phantom and Christine, then Raoul , Carlotta, Madame Giry. It has won over 50 awards. The opera house has 17 floors , is above an underground lake, was built in 1861-1875 in a neo- baroque style, golden ornamental decorations, statues, columns and bronze busts of composers

Siret: “ Prince Albert

Born in 1819 in Germany . He had unhappy childhood ( parents divorced when he was little ), mother left them , met Victoria at age 17, they were introduced by Uncle Leopold, they fell in love. They got married and got 9 children , 40 grandchildren. At first he was unpopular , after he made many great changes he became popular . He was the president of the Royal Society of Arts for 18 years . After his death Victoria built many memorials and Royal Albert Hall in 1871, there are more than 350 performances every year . The Albert medal, the Prince Consort´s Library.

Lisanna: “Yoko Ono”

She was born in 1933 in Tokyo , Japan in a wealthy family. In 1953 she moved to the USA, she was an excellent student and studied music and philosophy . She has studied in 4 schools, her art is influenced by avant - garde . She has won many awards. She has been married 3 times . In 1975 she got a son Sean . She has released 26 albums, 7 of them with John. Son Sean is a singer , songwriter and an actor .

Danek: “ Manchester

First mentioned in the 1st century . It´s an industrial city. There is canal system, railway(1st in the world) and telephone , cotton mills , crime level is high. It has the second biggest airport in the UK after London. No tickets on certain buses . Mainly nightlife economy, over 10 000 visitors per night . 2 universities , 2 football clubs , 2 big stadiums, largest is Manchester United Football stadium. Granada television, BBC, Hollywood films , The Guardian, red brick houses , second greatest after London.

Mihkel: “ Liverpool

Founded in 1207, city in 1880. Has been bombed 80 times. Albert Dock , Royal Liver Building (1911), Cunard Building (1917), Port of Liverpool (1907)is being restored in 2009.the Liverpool Blue Coat School is the top school in UK, has produced 8 Nobel Prize winners. The Beatles in 1960, record company was Parlophone records, Paul and Ringo still active . 1892 FC Liverpool,most successful in UK.

Robert: “ Traditional British Foods

Breakfast 1: eggs , bacon, sausages, bread , beans , mushrooms, coffee
Breakfast 2: cereals , slice of toast , orange juice, coffee
Lunch : sandwiches, crisps, fruits, juices
Dinner 1: potatoes, Brussels, sprouts, carrots
Dinner 2: a meal called Curry – rice , pasta, vegetables
Sunday dinner: roast meat potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire pudding
Roast lamb with green mint sauce and vegetables.
Puddings: salty and sweet . Apple or rhubarb crumble, bread and butter pudding.
Special booths for fish and chips , bangers and mash , hotdogs if people don´t have time. They eat yoghurt, potato chips, sandwiches also.

Kristjan : “ Ancient Freedom Fight and Boudica”

Boudica was a queen of Iceny tribe , she was tortured and her daughters were raped in public. Rebels destroyed 3 cities: London, St Albus , Colchester. Wales was the headquarter. They had several beliefs. Boudica means “victory”. They won several Roman troops. Roman Empire had 50 legions and over 5000 legionaries. Boudica´s army consisted of soldiers and families . There were several illnesses over the Rebel army. Boudica died shortly after the battle . She was forgotten by the Middle Ages. In Victorian era she became popular again . First play of her in 1610 , 3 films, several novels, Henry Purcell has somposed a piece of music, 2 statues one of these was destroyed. Some politicians are sometimes called after her.

Rogen: “The Great Fire of London”

Drought, narrow streets, wooden buildings, floors of straw, much gunpowder and oil in houses. 2 diarists, no fire department, water was against smaller fires , houses were demolished, water hose was very short.
1666 September 2 fire started from a bakery near midnight. Fire lasted for 4 days , 80% of London burnt down. People flee over Thames. Refugee camps were overloaded with crowds. Only a few people died (5-10), the plague ended , many famous buildings were destroyed. Sir Christopher Wren made the plans to rebuild the city. A monument .

Siim: “ Jane Austen

Born 16 December 1775 in South England . There were 8 children in the family, educated at home, she played piano , read books , wrote poems at the age of 11, 1802 she got proposed which she declined. She moved to Chawton, published novels, got Hodgkin´s disease and died in 1817. 5 unpublished novels. “ Sense and Sensibility ”the 1st novel , published under a pseudonym “A Lady ”, has been the material in TV many times. “ Pride and Prejudice ”. Henno Rajandi translated the last into Estonian in 1985, it ends with 2 major weddings. The movie has been nominated for 4 oscars but hasn´t won any. There are 9 books all together in Estonian.

Merily : “Helen Beatrix Potter”

Children´s author, illustrator, homeschooled, had many pets, read Walter Scott ´s novels, liked science, stories are based on little animals which she smuggled into her room . “The Tale of Peter Rabbit ”, has written 23 books. She married her publisher who died of penicious anemia. She bought a farm, had many animals, was happy . B. Potter Gallery in London. Drew illustrations, pictures, there are 2 films and many books about her.

Eliis : “ Woodstock Festival

5 festivals have been held , the first in 1969. There is rock, folk and jazz music. It was held to make peace , enjoy good music and pleasant atmosphere, to connect different people, to make profit . There was a bigger interest than expected. There is one film about it, made in 1970 to take the festival ´s message all over the world. There is a plaque at the original festival grounds and a museum .

Kristel: “The Longest - running Shows in the West End”

“The Mousetrap”, for 57 years, over 23 000 shows, based on a novel by A. Christie. Very mysterious piece, the murderer is unknown. “Les Misérables”, for 24 years, based on Hugo´s novel. St Martin´s theatre was built in 1916, Queen´s theatre. “The Phantom of the Opera” is played in Her Majesty´s Theatre since 1986. The name varies according to whether the monarch is male of female .

Getlin: “ Brighton , A Seaside Resort

Population is 155 919, is on the south coast, there are 2 universities, in 1974 an Eurovision Song Contest was held there. Romans built a villa there in the late first century. Brighton Baths were built in 1769, population grew from 19th century. The Royal Pavilion was used as a hospital. Queen Victoria didn´t like this town. Pavilion has been restored and is opened for visitors. Brighton Pier is an amusement park. West Pier is cut off from the shore since 1975. The concert hall caught fire in 2003. There has been a Brighton Museum, in a house which was built in 1805, since 1902. There is also a Fishing Museum. Brighton Beaches are one of the top 10 in the world. There is a Sea Life Center, the oldest aquarium in the world. There are very many parks : Queen´s park, Preston park. The Brighton Eye is a 183 m high post, this hasn´t been built yet. The Brighton festival since 1966, multi -art form, Brighton Festival Fringe(a dance ).

Maria: “The 18th Century Portrait Painting in England”

One influential painter was Van Dyck. The people on the paintings were bubbling of energy. Based on novelists, writers , philosophers.
George Romney. Born in Dalton, self-taught, wanted to become a history painter, after been to Italy , he became the favourite painter of the higher society. His art was free, swift and bold . He painted only portraits of women and children. “Mrs Mary Robinson” – an actress , soft and formal style. “Shepherd Girl” – soft colours, the girl probably wasn´t a sheperdiss. “ Emma , Lady Hamilton ” – the painter´s most frequent sitter, the most famous work .
Thomas Gainsborough . Born in Suffolk , studied under van Dyck, moved to London, one of the founders of the Royal Academy. His art was at the beginning naive, unskilful, strict. “The Blue Boy” – a friend of the artist, the most famous painting. “Mr and Mrs Andrews” – right after marriage, masterpiece of his early years. “Mrs Burroughs” – painter´s aunt , the headmaster of his boyhood school. He painted landscapes and portraits, used bright colours.

Kadri Keernik: “The Swinging Sixties”

Fashion , young people, pantyhose, baby pills, Volkswagen bus, flower power , anti-war movement , hippies, psychedelic drugs, Summer of Love, Woodstock festival. Art was also psychedelic and created under the effect of LSD or other drugs. Civil rights , free speech, women´s movement, first moon landing, England won FIFA world Cup. Supermodel Twiggy, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones , James Bond movies , “Breakfast at Tiffany ´s”, “Lolita”, Salinger , Fidel Castro , Woody Allen , Martin Luther King Jr., smiley icon in 1964, Big Mac in 1960.

Sandra: “John Lennon ´s Career After The Beatles”

Born in 1940, was a smart Beatle. 1960 The Beatles was created, 1969 the last concert on the roof of the Apple Building. Plastic Ono Band had many various members , “Give peace a chance”. 1 album for a film soundtrack, in 1976 “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band”, second solo album in 1971 “Imagine”. In 1973 moved to California for several months. He has written songs for Ringo Starr and Mick Jagger. He was murdered in 1980. “ Milk and Honey ” is an album which was finished and published by Yoko Ono after John´s death. He got Grammy award in 1982.

Andres: “The English Canal Network

Canals were built by Romans as irrigation canals. These are still in good condition . Aqueducts get boats over valleys, these are filled with water. There are also boat lifts like Falkirk Wheel in Scotland , stop locks, staircase locks which are built as steps and are very slow , tunnels. Tourists can have a trip on the boats and go bungee jumping from the aqueducts.

London History The Romans AD 43- AD 410 The Romans finally invaded Britain in AD 43 from Kent. The Romans lead by Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain twice before that in 55 and 54 BC but the invasions were unsuccessful. They made their way to the river Thames and sailed up it. The Romans knew it was important to control a crossing point at the river Thames, so they decided to build a settlement on the north bank. Although small settlements had been built on the banks of the Thames, the Romans were the ones who built the first city. They called their city Londinium. The Roman engineers noticed that the point where the swampy river narrowed would make an ideal crossing point, they built London Bridge. Less than 20 years later the native Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans in revenge for mistreatment and burnt Londinium to the ground.
