The Most Influential Figures in British History

The Most Influential Figures in British History There are many important historical figures, who have helped shape Britain into what it is today. In my opinion Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill are the ones who stand out and have had the biggest impact on British history. Firstly, Elizabeth I made a great impression on British history as she kept England from major wars during her reign, the kingdom expanded and she supported culture. The rule of Elizabeth I can be called a peaceful time as England did not enter any huge conflicts. She managed to keep good relations with other great countries. However, the defeat of the Spanish Armada left no one questioning the superiority of the British navy. In addition, the kingdom’s territories grew during her reign, Virginia in America being named after „The Virgin Queen“. Queen Elizabeth I also valued culture. Arts flourished while Elizabeth was i...

Philosophy today

Philosophy Today The Great Divide Most contemporary philosophers follow one of two approaches "Continental" philosophy "Analytic" philosophy Continental philosophy is more influential on the European continent Analytic philosophy is predominant in the major research universities in the English-speaking world Analytic Philosophy Analytic philosophy developed from attempts in the early 20th century to make our concepts precise. The model of this procedure was science. Emphasis in contemporary analytic philosophy is on language and meaning, and meaning is understood as a relation between language and objective reality.

How does the United States influence Estonia?

How does the United States influence Estonia? The United States of America is one of the most influential countries in the world. Its’ influence can be seen even in Estonia. Estonian national security is built upon being a member of NATO and it is dependent on Article 5. Therefore, it is important for us to be in good political relations with America because it is the most influential member of the organization. To stay in good terms some of our political decisions might be affected by the United States, however, it will stay out of the public view. Although Estonia is not directly dependant on America economically but as the United States’ economy has an effect on the global economy, we are bound to be influenced indirectly. In the cultural aspect, Americanisation is taking spreading all over the world. In our everyday

Science reigns people

Science reigns people Biochemist Isaac Asimov has once said: “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.”. The more one thinks about his words, the more they have to be accepted. It is true that science affects people, but the most influential is the part that directly concerns them and their lives. That is why this essay will take a closer look at some of the pros and cons of medical development. I will begin with the positive aspects of medical evolution. Firstly, thanks to advanced medicine, doctors are able to detect diseases at an early stage, or even before they arise, which gives people a longer life. Secondly, knowing how diseases spread and behave is possible with the help of medicines to avoid huge outbreaks that could kill thousands of people. Thirdly, studies will be helping to make the medicaments less harmful. Fourthly, ma...

Ainult 24% vastanudest on kursis arvutimängude heast mõjust inimesele, kuid halbu mõjusid teavad koguni 53% vastanudest. Järelikult on rohkem levinud teadmised arvutimängude negatiivsetest mõjudest. The role of the free press

The role of the free press Newspapers and magazines play an imoportant role in today's society and are capable of influencing people's lives in many ways. The new electronic media have become even more influential in shaping people's opinions, attitudes and behaviour. However, does the free press offer a valuable service, or is it, as American journalist, Edward Egglestone said, "organised gossip"? On a personal level, the media can be very entertaining and informative. Reading about the lifestyles of the rich and famous is amusing and can help people forget their own problems. Cigarettes - Enemies or Friends?

So can we call cigarettes our friends? Most countries in the world have a legal smoking age of 18. That means that when you are not and adult you should not smoke or consume any products related to tobacco and cigarettes. But if to look into our street picture, there are seen so many under age smokers that it is really threatening. It all starts from the home how you have been raised, how strict were the rules a child had to follow and how much did your parents trust you. If a child as influential friends who influences him/her the same way, then there we are plus one smoker to that 1.2 billions. There has been so much discussion about the cigarettes bad influence to health. Cigarettes include over 100 ingredients, many of them flavourants for the tobacco. A key ingredient that makes cigarettes more addictive is the inclusion of reconstituted tobacco, which has additives to make nicotine more volatile as the cigarette burns. The Origins of American Literature

The common sense and witty aphorisms of Franklin's popular Poor Richard's Almanac series appealed to colonial readers. Franklin also wrote effectively on the question of allegiance to the British crown but it was his protégé, Thomas Paine, who inspired colonists during the dark days of the Revolution with his stirring pamphlet Common Sense (1776), which sold over half a million copies, and American Crisis Papers (1776-1783). Thomas Jefferson was also an influential political writer. He made important contributions to the 85 essays of The Federalist papers, which effectively outlined the Am governmental system and the basic principles of republican theory. Jefferson also wrote the Declaration of Independence (1776), which identifies the moment in which the nation was born, and in stirring language explains the reasons for its birth. In the post-Revolution period the search began for a characteristic Am lit. The most

Edward the Confessor & Westminster Abbey

For the first eleven years of Edward's reign the real ruler of England was Godwin, Earl of Wessex. In 1045, he married Godwin's only daughter, Edith. Godwin was the most important nobleman in England. They had no children as Edward had taken a vow of celibacy. Even this marriage couldn't prevent a breach between Godwin and Edward in 1049. A number on Normans were killed in a scrap in Dover and Kent in 1051. Edward still had influential friends in Normandy and he wanted the people of Dover punhised for this. Edward asked Earl Godwin to be the punisher. After saying no to king he raised an army against Edward instead. The other two senior noblemen, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria, remained loyal to Edward. Later Edward outlawed Godwin and his family in Flanders. Between 1051 and 1052, Edward increased the number of Normans who advised him at court. Edward's continued favouritism caused problems with his nobles

was different and she was portrayed as kind of an outsider. She once was a slave, but now, to her family, she was a very loyal servant. She was very helpful, concerned and loyal towards the people she cared about. She appeared to share her nature with the Caribbean Islands, she seemed to somehow be a part of them. At the same time she feared greatly for her knowledge of the dark magic. I’d say that Christophine had quite an influential role in the book. She took over Antoinette’s mother’s role and gave her a stable life as she started to take care of her. As for me, she seemed caring and affectionate, especially when it came to Antoinette and her wellbeing. Her confidence and independence are respectful traits, no matter what. If I had to meet her, I’d most probably be a bit frightened due to her proficiency in black magic and I think the combination of that and Jamaican appearance is pretty scary.

London - inglise keeles kokkuvõte

LONDON The history of the town is very closely linked with the history of the country itself. The name probably comes from the celtic words Llyn, which means a lake, and Dun, which means a fort or a strong place. Although the site was not important during the Celtic period (400 BC 43 AD) During the Roman occupation Londinium, as it was called then, was not influential politically, but was, however an important crossing point for the romans over the river Thames. Londinium was at a very good place, so it soon became a trading centre. In AD 61 the city was devastated by Boudicca, who led a revolt againt the Roman conquest of Britain. The city was burned down and its inhabitants massacred. London was rapidly rebuilt, becoming the capital of the province Britannia. could do better. I believe that the economic factors will keep improving in the foreseeable future. In the United Kingdom, the GDP per capita was about 33,200 euros in 2013. That is considerably more than in Estonia. The unemployment rate in the UK is around 6% which is a bit lower than in Estonia. While comparing these two figures, it could be said that the UK is doing economically better than Estonia, but it has to be remembered that the UK is bigger and much more influential as well. If I were able to change something in Estonian business life, I would reduce the amount of taxes people have to pay from their monthly income. Currently, the difference between gross income and what people actually earn is quite large. I understand that it is quite unrealistic that this reduction could be remarkable, as the government has to get money from somewhere, but I believe that this is something that would improve the life of many working people.

Instead of modifying a theory based on new evidence they are engaged in pseudohistory; the rewriting of the past for personal or political purposes. WHAT IS DENIED AND BY WHOM? The gas chambers: Pat Buchanan, the most effective Holocaust denier in America has stated that the gas chambers were not used at the camps to exterminate Jews simply because `'the diesel engines don't emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody''. The six million people murdered: the first influential Holocaust revisionist, Paul Rassinier, said the number of Jewish victims was exaggerated and his own estimate was that only about 1,5 million Jews died. Cause of deaths: deniers say the deaths in concentration camps resulted in disease or starvation; that they weren't killed by the Nazis. And if they were, it was because of wartime privations. 300 000 to one or two million Jews were killed in ghettos and camps.

Following the break of one-party rule, Russia's party system became strongly fragmented - during the 1995 parliamentary elections, 43 parties competed for popular votes (McFault 1996: 90). In the 21st century, the pendulum has moved back, as the intense party- competition has been replaced with a one-party monopoly. During his term in office, president Putin made a series of reforms that reduced the strength of the most influential pre- existing parties and gathered a majority of the leading politicians into a new pro-Kremlin party called United Russia. While most of world's contemporary parties have been established by the politicians who seek either politics or public office, United Russia, as well as its predecessors were created by top politicians with the intention to maximize their already existing power and control over country's politics. Therefore, unlike in many other post-

male or female. Women's suffragists in the United Kingdom was a national movement that began in 1872. Women were prohibited from voting in the United Kingdom until the 1832 Reform Act and the 1835 Municipal Corporations Act. Both before and after 1832, establishing women's suffrage on some level was a political topic, although it would not be until 1872 that it would become a national movement with the formation of the National Society for Women's Suffrage and later the more influential National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS). Little victory was achieved in this constitutional campaign in its earlier years up to around 1905. It was at this point that the militant campaign began with the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). The WSPU was quite radical in their behaviour, as they wanted to get the right to vote as quickly as possible. To illustrate their more militant stance, they adopted the slogan "Deeds, not words".

electric motor technology, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology. As a chemist, Faraday discovered benzene, investigated the clathrate hydrate of chlorine, invented an early form of the bunsen burner and the system of oxidation numbers, and popularized terminology such as anode, cathode, electrode, and ion. Although Faraday received little formal education and knew little of higher mathematics, such as calculus, he was one of the most influential scientists in history. Some historians of science refer to him as the best experimentalist in the history of science. Faraday was the first and foremost Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, a position to which he was appointed for life. Faraday was highly religious; he was a member of the Sandemanian Church, a Christian sect founded in 1730 which demanded total faith and commitment. Biographers have noted that "a

Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton, Basil Hallward

You can only try to deny something but it is inevitable that one day the truth will come out and haunt you again. Since the main emphasize of Dorian's worries concerns his looks it is no wonder that he is selfish and weak. It is not too hard to sway his mind. Whether it is his true nature or an outcome of being easily influenced and manipulated with, Dorian cares not for standards of morality or consequences of his actions. He often concentrates on one of his most influential friend and sets his life according to his sayings. This causes Dorian to lose other amigos and important people. Dorian also lacks the knowledge of what is true love. He wants a trophy wife who either looks good or has a great talent. But if the woman loses her gift, Dorian feels like she betrays him. This proves once again the superficiality of Dorian Gray. To sum up Dorian Gray may look good from the outside but is restless and constantly fighting his demons in the inside

Batman

I The Birth of Batman The creation of the fictional superhero Batman is credited to artist Bob Kane, even though in reality he was cocreated with writer Bill Finger. Batman first appeared in 1939 in Detective Comics #27. Since then Batman has been an important and influential character in the comic book universe. Publisher of DC Comics, Vin Sullivan was looking for something new for Detective Comics, which would be as intriguing as Superman had been in Action Comics, but it had to be something completely new. Sullivan's ideas inspired Kane, and he credits the creation of Batman as much to Sullivan as to himself. Kane's first image was very much a hero with birdlike wings, but during the process of drawing evolved into a more ...

Estuary English - A Controversial Issue?

of English people from various socio-economic groups, while the linguistic minorities from the lowest groups may "use certain features of `Estuary English' in combination with elements of whatever their regional speech might be" (1999/2002). He assumes that Estuary English may take over some of the functions RP has served for years, for example disguising one's origins. He actually thinks that EE may have already become a model for general imitation "for large and influential sections of the young". Trudgill (2001) approaches the question with an apparent reserve and justifies his point of view in practical terms; the present sociolinguistic conditions are not favourable for EE to spread in the whole of the UK. First of all, London is not the only large urban centre; therefore it has not exclusive rights to influence the speech in all the regions of the country. Next, such centres as Belfast, Dublin, Cardiff, Glasgow,

Comparative law

The modern founding figure of comparative and anthropological jurisprudence was Sir Henry Maine, a British jurist and legal historian. In his 1861 work Ancient Law: Its Connection with the Early History of Society, and Its Relation to Modern Ideas, he set out his views on the development of legal institutions in primitive societies and engaged in a comparative discussion of Eastern and Western legal traditions. This work placed comparative law in its historical context and was widely read and influential. The first university course on the subject was established at the University of Oxford in 1869, with Maine taking up the position of professor Comparative law in the US was brought by a legal scholar fleeing persecution in Germany, Rudolf Schlesinger. Schlesinger eventually became professor of comparative law at Cornell Law School helping to spread the discipline throughout the US. 4.International Courts European and international courts

The Pre-Raphaelites

THE PRE-RAPHAELITES The PRB was formed in 1848 in London and it was an association of painters, poets, critics, sculptors. It was founded by three Royal Academy students who wanted to brake free from the academic art and return to the moral and descriptive truthfulness that they felt was gone from art. (The Royal Academy of Arts is and institution with a purpose to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate.). The founders were William Hunt, John Millais, Dante Rossetti. Because of the fact that they were all students they were also very young- the oldest one, Hunt, was 21. They were soon joined by William Rossetti(critic), James Collison(painter), Frederic Stephens (critic), Thomas Woolner(sculptor). The three youthful Pre-Raphaelites deliberately challenged the established view of art, drawing up a manifesto of their intentions and publishi...
