Paul Graham, “Hackers

In “Hackers & Painters, Paul Graham, computer science expert and painter, explains examines what motivates computer programmers to do what they do, as well as attempt to answer many of the questions that have arisen with computers. He explains the word “hacker” has more than the one definition most of us are familiar with. The hackers who Paul Graham refers to throughout the book are the good computer programmers who have made all that we have real. Graham's first chapter, "Why Nerds Are Unpopular," tries to explain why smart kids are at the bottom of the food chain in high school and what their priorities are. While writing about nerds, Graham talks about his own progress to become computer scientist and painter. He explains the similarities between painters and computer hackers, including the desire to make existing things better.

From 1919 to 1921 he was secretary of state for war and air, and from 1924-1929 was chancellor of the exchequer. The next decade were his 'wilderness years', in which his opposition to Indian self-rule and his support for Edward VIII during the 'Abdication Crisis' made him unpopular, while his warnings about the rise of Nazi Germany and the need for British rearmament were ignored. When war broke out in 1939, Churchill became first lord of the Admiralty. In May 1940, Neville Chamberlain resigned as prime minister and Churchill took his place. His refusal to surrender to Nazi Germany inspired the country. He worked tirelessly throughout the war, building strong relations with US President Roosevelt while maintaining a sometimes difficult alliance with the Soviet Union.

The Norman Conquest

This type of castle consisted of an artificial mound (the motte) surmounted by a wooden tower and enclosed by moat and stockade (the bailey). Later, the Normans built great stone towers called keeps. The Normans built nearly a hundred castles during William's reign. In 1086, William ordered a land survey for tax purposes. He sent a team of people all through England to make a complete economic survey. This survey was the only one of its kind in Europe. Not surprisingly, it was most unpopular with the people, because they felt they could not escape from its findings. The survey's results are contained in a document that became known as the Domesday Book, which provided information for William's tax officers. It so reminded people of the paintings of the Day of Judgement, or `doom', on the walls of their churches that they called it the Domesday Book. The Domesday Book still exists, and gives us an extraordinary amount of information about England at this time.

an object, or to the land on which it stands. It is the abstract idea of "home" which is important, not the building. This will be sold when the time and price is right. The houses themselves are just investments. Another is the fact that it is extremely rare for people to commission the building of their own houses. This notion of houses principally as investment leads to a strange approach toward house prices. Individuality and conformity Flats are not unpopular just because they do not give enough privacy. It is also that they do not allow enough scope for the expression of individuality. Not everything about housing in Britain displays individuality. Most houses are built one at a time. Instead, whole streets, even neighborhoods, are built at the same time and same design. Her subsequent withdrawal from public life made her unpopular, but during the late 1870s and 1880s she gradually returned to public view and, with increasingly pro-imperial sentiment, she was restored to favour with the British public.

The Queens of England

Although Philip was never crowned in England, important documents bore his signature and were issued in the name of the "King and Queen". There was opposition to his involvement in English affairs. One expression of this was the serious rebellion under the leadership of Sir Thomas Wyatt (the Younger) to depose Mary and put her half-sister, Elizabeth, later Elizabeth I, on the throne. Philip was an uncompromising Roman Catholic and unpopular in England. At his order, Mary joined in a war against France, with the result that Calais, the last relic of the English conquests won during the Hundred Years' War with France, was lost in 1558. Its loss upset her deeply: "When I am dead and opened, you shall find Calais lying in my heart", she is reported to have said. Mary is characterized as "Bloody Mary" because of the large number of religious persecutions that took place during her reign; almost 300 people were condemned to death as

France itself likewise suffered greatly from the war, as most of the conflict occurred on the continent. 15. Wat Tyler's Rebellion took place in 1381. The first great popular rebellion in English history. Its immediate cause was the imposition of the unpopular poll tax of 1381, which brought to a head the economic discontent that had been growing since the middle of the century. The rebellion drew support from several sources and included well-to-do artisans and villeins as well as the destitute. Probably the main grievance of the agricultural labourers and urban working classes was the Statute of Labourers (1351), which attempted to fix maximum wages during the labour shortage following the Black Death. 16

The Wars of the Roses The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought in medieval England from 1455 to 1487 between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The name Wars of the Roses is based on the badges used by the two sides, the red rose for the Lancastrians and the white rose for the Yorkists. Major causes of the conflict include: 1) both houses were direct descendents of king Edward III; 2) the ruling Lancastrian king, Henry VI, surrounded himself with unpopular nobles; 3) the civil unrest of much of the population; 4) the availability of many powerful lords with their own private armies; and 5) the untimely episodes of mental illness by king Henry VI. The Wars of the Roses ended with the killing of Richard (the House of York) by Henry VII. Henry VII married Elizabeth of York. He merged the rival symbols together into a red and white Tudor Rose. Referaat "Chelsea Flower Show"

The First World War had been for only six months when the 1919 Chelsea Flower Show opened, following a vote "overpoweringly in the affirmative" to start up again. The year 1926 produced another problem: The General Strike. Fortunately it ended just in time for the Chelsea Flower Show to go ahead, on 25 May postponed by one week and reduced to three days. The Gardner's Chronicle reported that it was larger than ever. As the experimental five-day opening in 1925 had proved unpopular with exhibitors, the Show became a four-day event in 1927, when an extra day, especially for RHS Members, was instituted. This was to be on a Thursday, and public were allowed in only from Wednesday to Friday. In 1929 Chelsea reflected garden styles that would be seen more than 50 years later: great set pieces in which hardware and design were as important as the planting itself. Although there were two more Shows before war was declared in September 1939,

By the time Cromwell died, he, his system of government, and the puritan ethics that went with it (theatres and other forms of amusement had been banned) had become so unpopular that the executed king’s son was asked to return and become King Charles II. 18. The Restoration. Restoration, in English history, is the reestablishment of the monarchy on the accession (1660) of Charles II after the collapse of the Commonwealth (see under commonwealth) and the Protectorate. In PA, the problem is that on the one hand, experts are hired both on the basis of fashionability and of their capacity to suggest change, not to say that things should remain as they are the main reason why international consultancy has gone strongly for NPM. On the other hand, for politicians it is very practical to turn to experts, because it alleviates them from the pressure to, first, find out what the proper decision should be and, second, to implement possibly unpopular measures. Under the cloak of efficiency, NPM specifically returns decision-making to the allegedly expert bureaucrat, therefore removing political control, and that also means political responsibility, from the political sphere. "It may be convenient for politicians to hide behind the smoke-screen of managerial decision and autonomy, but this hardly adds to the democratic quality of decision-making." (Wright 1997: 11)

with his cousin Henry. Henry was one of the Lords Appellant and one of the Richard's advisor-favorites. However, the increasingly suspicious Richard banished him for ten years. Henry invaded England while Richard was on campaign in Ireland, usurping the throne from the king. Richard lacked support and was quickly captured by Henry IV. Richard was murdered while in prison. There were constant rebellions along Henrys reign by Richards' supporters. Henry died in Westminster Abbey as an extremely unpopular king. *The Wars of the Roses 1455-1485 Series of civil wars in England fought between supporters of the Houses of Lancaster (King Henry VI, red rose) and York (Richard, white rose). They were marked by brutality that is practically unknown in the history of English wars before and since. The question was which dynasty should be given royal power. The most obvious effect was the collapse of the Plantagenet dynasty and its replacement with the

In August 2010, Ukraine reached a new agreement with the IMF for a USD 15.1 billion Stand-By Agreement to put the country on the path to fiscal sustainability, reform the gas sector, and shore up the country's banking system. Economic growth resumed in 2010 and 2011, buoyed by exports. After initial disbursements, the IMF program stalled in early 2011 due to the lack of progress in implementing key gas sector reforms, namely gas tariff increases (obviously politically very unpopular measure). Agriculture fell to 9.3% of the total GDP in 2011 compared with 14% in 1999. Industry, including mining, manufacturing and construction, continued to account for 34.7% in this period. Meanwhile, trade and other services grew from 51 to 56.1 percent. 15 1.1.4. Foreign Direct Investments Despite having huge potential, Ukrainian economy is critically lacking in foreign investments.

The monarchy and the House of Lords were restored in 1660. Charles II 8 avoided quarrelling with his father’s enemies – the House of Commons – and reigned comfortably for 25 years. The subjects who indicated that they disliked Joe bought just as many of his tickets as did those who indicated that they liked him. The rule for reciprocity was so strong that it simply over- whelmed the influence of a factor-liking for the requester-that normally af- fects the decision to comply. Think of the implications. People we might ordinarily dislike-unsavory or un- welcome sales operators, disagreeable acquaintances, representatives of strange or unpopular organizations-can greatly increase the chance that we will do what they wish merely by providing us with a small favor prior to their requests. Let's take a recent historical example. The Hare Krishna Society is an Eastern religious sect with centuries-old roots traceable to the Indian city of Calcutta. Its spectacular modern-day story occurred in the 1970S when it experienced a remarkable growth, ~ Chapter 2 RECIPROCATION READER'S REPORT 2.1

"That's Edward and Emmett Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale. The one who left was Alice Cullen; they all live together with Dr. Cullen and his wife." She said this under her breath. I glanced sideways at the beautiful boy, who was looking at his tray now, picking a bagel to pieces with long, pale fingers. His mouth was moving very quickly, his perfect lips barely opening. The other three still looked away, and yet I felt he was speaking quietly to them. Strange, unpopular names, I thought. The kinds of names grandparents had. But maybe that was in vogue here -- small town names? I finally remembered that my neighbor was called Jessica, a perfectly common name. There were two girls named Jessica in my History class back home. "They are... very nice-looking." I struggled with the conspicuous understatement. "Yes!" Jessica agreed with another giggle. "They're all together though -- Emmett and Rosalie, and Jasper and Alice, I mean. And they live together

Third, the structure of the script was considered as flawed as the design of the Titanic, forcing audiences to endure an hour and half of melodrama, the length of a normal movie, before delivering the iceberg and the action. It had a tragic ending, which is usually death at the box office. At over three hours long, it was almost twice the ideal picture length from the point of view of
