Pride and prejudice

Pride and Prejudice Questionnaire · Task 1: watch the movie to the end on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6RI7Rb2g6k · and answer the questions: 1. What was the relationship between Mr. Wickham and Mr. Darcy (what kind of common past did they share)? Both had grown up in the same area and under the protection of grand old Mr.Darcy, who had raised two boys equally as his sons. Two childhood friends parted immediately after old Mr.Darcy's death in arguings over money, power and honour (which one Wicham- had less in tons). · Mr. Darcy seemed to be an utterly arrogant, cold- and careless-natured man to strangers. Once you got to know his true nature, you got to know one honest, loyal and fair man, who expressed his disgust for "false pearls" by keeping distance. Austen sold the copyright for Pride and Prejudice to Thomas Egerton. Egerton published the first edition of Pride and Prejudice in three hardcover volumes in January. The tone is light and a little humoristic. Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and life among English gentility. At first the book was called "First impressions" and this gives a better expression to the requests of the author, than the later heading. People meet, do not understand each other and communication does not offer joy either. So this is contrary to love at first sight. It is a

Jane Austen "Pride and prejudice"

Jane Austen "Pride and prejudice" "Pride and prejudice" is a widely beloved novel because it makes people laugh and think. It was first published in 1813 and since then it has been truly loved novel for younger and older people. As well as that, the critics liked it too. So it's not only publics favourite but also smarter people love it. I think that the main reason so many like it, is because it's unpredictable and understable. In addition it's not very difficult to read. But I had to read the novel from laptop and that made my eyes hurt, so that really didn't work for me. Novel has been classified as a classic love story. That is one big reason why I loved this book. I love those classic love stories, that are just so good and make me think along. I haven't seen the movie, so that gave me free hands to imagine the story like I would like. It's not only me who can imagine the people and places in my mind, I think that's the reason to...

Class and social status in Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice Class and social status in Pride and Prejudice Mankind has been acknowledging one another's superiority since the dawn of time. In the novel under the discussion, social status has a great importance in the turn of events. Everyone in the novel is somehow influenced by the topic of fortune or social class. To start with, even though "Pride and Prejudice" touches on many different subjects and characters, its main events are related to or caused by the dogmas of class distinctions.

A person who has committed a crime loses his/her right to be

A person who has committed a crime loses his/her right to be treated as an equal member of society In our society there is a lot of people who have an opinion, that a person who has committed a crime loses his/her right to be treated as an equal member of society. Life of these people become more complicated than life of people, who hasn´t been punished. There are many issues and problems that come up and bring among some difficulties. First of all, there is prejudice, that a person who has committed a crime will do it again and they are not trustful, therefore they are treated with caution. You have to earn a person´s trust to be in a good relation with him/her and it is hard if you know about someone´s past with criminal aspects. It is easier to be in a relation with people with good past and we often choose people with same views on life beside us. However, I think it is not always true, that a person who has committed

Book review. A&Q (Slumdog Millionaire)

Mohammad Thomas knew answer for all the questions he was asked for. One of the main reasons whay I started to read this book, was the success of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Although I had not seen the film I thought that the theme of the book and the film was very interesting. So I decided to read the novel first, because the chances are (predictably and almost consistently so), I would like the book better. Most of the movies that were based on books like Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, and the more recent Marley and Me and multiple award- winning Slumdog Millionaire for example, fell short to its namesake. While they were no doubt entertaining films, fans of the book would have expected more and so would I. The book had a depth and a feeling, that was to me, lost in the movie. Page after page, I was riveted. His mis- adventures were more real, more painful, more lonely somehow - even though he was all of that in the movie too

first black president of South Africa. He concentrates on problems, which are associated with racial divisions between black and white South Africans. The problems between black and white are obvious even between his own security team. Mr. Mandela attends a game of the Springboks, which is the South Africa's rugby union team. He realizes that the blacks in the stadium cheer against their home team, as the mostly-white Springboks represent prejudice and apartheid in their minds. He realizes that he did the same thing, when he was on Robben Island. South-Africa has to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the president decides to support the Springboks and meet with their captain Francois Pienaar. Mr. Mandela confirms that if the Springboks would win this World Cup, the victory would unite and inspire the nation. Mandela also gives Francois a British poem "Invictus", which had helped him to manage his life by the the time he was in prison.

Writting a summary

Writting a summary I read the following sections of the booklet „Europe. A journal for young people“. The booklet is listed in 7 sections:“ Europe in everday life“; „The European Union- what does this mean exactly?“; „How does the European Union work?“; „What exactly does the EU do?“; „Europe moves on_ the enlargement of the European Union“; „Europe and the wider world“ and „The future of Europe“. ‘Europe is somewhere else.’ This provocative statement opens the first chapter of „Europe. A journal for young people“. It is, of course, not true. As EU citizens, Europe is our home. It affects our lives in many areas. For example: money (euro is a common currency); flying has become much cheaper and safer; the police forces in the EU work closely together and European environmental protection lays down common standards. The second sections provides information about what does the European Union exactly means and when did 28 countries come ...

History of the USA.

Over the next two years, millions of unemployed were given jobs and numerous measures were also taken to help the farmers. In 1941 the United States entered the Second World War when Japan attacked the Hawaiian Islands. The war ended in 1945 when the USA dropped the atomic bombs on two Japanese cities and made Japan to surrender. Today about 30 million of 260 million Americans are black. When they were freed after the Civil War, the Southerners were angry at them and showed a lot of prejudice. Until in 1870 the blacks didn't have civil rights or the right to vote. In the 20th century many blacks travelled to the North but even there they were treated differently. In the 1950s a black churchman by the name Martin Luther King started to fight for black people and said that they were equal to white people. After 1963 when he held his famous speech "I have a dream...", in 1964 the blacks were given same rights as the white. In 1968 King was murdered.

R. Kipling & M. Faraday

Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Later in life Kipling came to be recognized as a "prophet of British imperialism." Many saw prejudice and militarism in his works, and the resulting controversy about him continued for much of the 20th century. Kipling kept writing until the early 1930s, but at a slower pace and with much less success than before. He died of perforated duodenal ulcer on 18 January 1936, two days before George V, at the age of 70. His death had in fact previously been incorrectly announced in a magazine, to which he wrote, "I've just read that I am dead. Don't forget to delete me from your list of subscribers

Bob Marley

His father, Norval Sinclair Marley, (born in 1895), was a Jamaican of English descent, with parents from Sussex. Norval was a Marine officer and captain, as well as a plantation overseer, when he married Cedella Booker, a black Jamaican then eighteen years old. Norval provided financial support for his wife and child, but seldom saw them, as he was often away on trips. Marley was ten years old when his father died of a heart attack in 1955 at age 60. Marley suffered racial prejudice as a youth, because of his mixed racial origins,[3] and faced questions about his own racial identity throughout his life. He once reflected: I don't have prejudice against myself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white.

The document states this very fully. The other most important matter, which calls aloud for redress. remains inexplicable to this moment. Seven years I was at your royal court, where all to whom this undertaking was mentioned, unanimously declared it to be a delusion. Now all, down to the very tailors, seek permission to make discoveries. It can be believed that they go forth to plunder, and it is granted to them to do so, so that they greatly prejudice my honor and do very great damage to the enterprise. It is well to give to God that which is His due and to Caesar that which belongs to him. This is a just sentiment and based on justice. The lands which here obey Your Highnesses are more extensive and richer than all other Christian lands. After I, by the divine will, had placed them under your royal and exalted lordship, and was on the point of securing a very great revenue, suddenly,

Swifts A Modest Proposal

A Modest Proposal also reveals to the reader a religious theme, expressed by the sense of disdain of British Protestants towards Roman Catholics, especially the Irish Catholics, often referred as "papist" within the pamphlet. The British enacted laws limiting the ability of Irish innate to thrive and prosper. Ireland was controlled by England, which imposed many taxes upon Irish people and appropriated their resources. By this, this author satirizes the prejudice of Protestants towards Catholics. He writes that "it would greatly lessen the number of papists, with whom we are yearly over-run, being the principal breeds of the nation as well as our most dangerous enemies" (56). Swift notes that Catholics seem to breed more rapidly than Protestants: Infant's flesh will be in season throughout the year, but more plentifully in March, and a little before and after ... that fish are a

Racism A race is a group of people that come from a common background. That group is generally determined based on skin color. Commonly, but not always, people are categorized into one of five races: White, Black, Latino or Hispanic, Asian, and Indigenous or Native. Racism then, is the discrimination or prejudice of a person or group based on the racial group she or they belong to. It's not that simple, however. The term racism is actually used in many ways. Some refer to racism as white supremacism, the belief that the Caucasian race is superior to all other races. Others define racism as discrimination against a particular race's culture, beliefs or traditions. Racism might refer to the idea that a single race is somehow purer than other races, or that one race genetically

This was the great cultural encounter initiated by Christopher Columbus. This is the event we celebrate each year on Columbus Day. In the 20th century many blacks travelled to the North but even there they were treated as different and until 1954 black kids had to go to separate schools. In the 1950s a black churchman by the name Martin Luther King started to fight for black people and said that they were equal to whites. After 1963 when he held his famous speech "I have a dream..

In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize, and he remains its youngest-ever recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he rejected. However, later in life Kipling also came to be seen (in George Orwell's words) as a "prophet of British imperialism." Many saw prejudice and militarism in his works, and the resulting controversy about him continued for much of the 20th century. According to critic Douglas Kerr: "He is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognized as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced.

In 1929 the Great Depression began with the stock market crash. Banks, factories and farms shut down and many Americans were unemployed. In 1941 the United States entered the Second World War when Japan attacked the Hawaiian Islands. The war ended in 1945 when the USA dropped the first atomic bombs, and the world entered the Nuclear Age. Today about 30 million of 260 million Americans are black. When they were freed after the Civil War, the Southerners were angry at them and showed a lot of prejudice. Some of them formed the Ku Klux Klan who beat and murdered black people. The strength of the study was the variable control, which enabled the researchers to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between schemas and different memory processes. Lots of research has supported the schema theory and it has turned out to be quite useful in explaining interpretation, memory and other things. Schema theory has contributed to an understanding of memory distortions and social cognition. It is used to explain stereotyping and prejudice. Some of the limitations of the theory are that it is not entirely clear how schemas are acquired and how they influence cognition. It has been criticized that it is too vague to be useful, but many scientist still use it explain cognitive processing. They argue that, simply by providing individu- als of different ethnic backgrounds with more exposure to one another as equals, those individuals will naturally come to like each other better. However, when sci- entists have examined school integration-the area offering the single best test of the contact approach-they have discovered quite the opposite pattern. School de- segregation is more likely to increase prejudice between blacks and whites than to decrease it (Stephan, 1978). Let's stay with the issue of school desegregation for a while. However well in- tentioned the proponents of interracial harmony through simple contact are, their approach is unlikely to bear fruit because the argument on which it is based is terri- bly misinformed.
