  • Orson Scott Card

He was born on the 24th of August, 1951 in Richland, Washington.
Card's writing career began primarily as a poet , studying at Brigham Young University . During his studies as a theatre major , he began "doctoring" scripts, adapting fiction for theatre production, and finally writing his own one-act and full - length plays . Later he has worked both as a freelancer and a contracted writer.
He first wrote the short story "Ender's Game" while working at the BYU press. Ender's Game and its sequel Speaker for the Dead were both awarded the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, making Card the only author (as of 2008) to win both of science fiction's top prizes in consecutive years . Card continued the series with seven books, which divide into “ Shadow ” and “Speaker” series. He has also announced his plan to write two more novels: Shadows in Flight , a book that connects the "Shadow" series and "Speaker" series together, and Ender in Exile, a book that takes place after Ender's game and before Speaker for the Dead. Furthermore, Card recently announced that Ender's Game will soon be made into a movie.
Though Card is best- known for “Ender’s Game”, he has also written in a variety of other genres , including plays, short stories , books on writing, the Homecoming series, other science fiction books, and nonfiction , such as articles on computer technology .

  • The Setting

The novel starts off on Earth, with scenes at the school and the Wiggin home. Little attention is given to the details of this setting , not even the name of the city, and so it comes across as a standard American neighborhood.
A shuttle is used as a background in the fourth chapter . It has small narrow corridors and the walls of the rooms were carpeted as floors. The importance of the shuttle is that Ender learned something about orientation in zero gravity and that knowledge helped him a lot later.
Most of the time passes in Battle School, which is composed of army barracks with rows of bunk beds; dining halls one for soldiers and one for commanders, with scoreboards decorating both; the game room , with various video games for the children to play; battlerooms, where the children have practice and battles in zero gravity; and a gym with shower rooms, where Ender and Bonzo fight . There is also an area for teachers’ quarters, which the children never go to, but it is presumably in this vicinity where the conversations between Graff and other adults takes place.
After Battle School he returns to Earth before going to Command School. There in the wilderness is a large house, overlooking lakes on either side. Although there are wasps that Ender says will sting without provocation, the setting is peaceful, allowing Ender the mental recovery and relaxation he needs .
Next comes the shuttle ride to Eros , where Command School is located , the trip is long and Ender and Graff begin to feel enclosed and tired of the space . Eros, built by the buggers, is not much better: the low ceilings, narrow passages, downward- sloping floor and lower gravity. The focus of activity here is in the simulation rooms, where, it turns out, Ender is actually commanding the real fleets.
When he leaves Eros, it is not for Earth, but for the first human colony , on a former bugger world, which will become known as Ender’s World. While looking for a location for another group of colonists, Ender discovers a landscape mimicking that in the fantasy game he played at Battle School. The setting here is used by the buggers to communicate with Ender and lead him to the discovery of their hive queen .
  • Main Characters

    Ender
Ender is a small boy, only six years old when the novel begins, and eleven old when he defeats the buggers. He is undersized for his age and so he was bullied a lot. Ender is a Third, but permitted by the government to be born because he has the superior intelligence of the Wiggin children and a disposition that is kinder than Peter’s, but not as sensitive as Valentine . As such, Ender is able to do well in Battle School and go on to successfully command the human mission to the bugger home world in Command School, but he regrets the deaths he has caused, and is glad for the redemption the hive-queen gave him. Ender loves his sister Valentine the most in this world, and his biggest fear is to become a killer like his brother Peter.
    Valentine
The sister of Ender, she consistently comes to his defense , whether it is when Peter threatens him, or when she feels that Graff is suggesting that Ender is mentally similar to Peter. Although she agrees to go along with Peter’s plan for keeping the world united by taking on the identity of Demosthenes in her writings on the nets , she believes that her ability to persuade by flattery along with her other strengths (such as equal mental abilities) will, in the end, make her stronger than Peter. She is able to use that power to keep Ender from going back to Earth, where she is sure that he would fall under Peter’s control , and instead takes him to the colony, where she writes a history of the war.
    Peter
The oldest of the Wiggin children, Peter uses threats and violence in order to control those around him. Despite having tortured a squirrel in the woods , he admits that he fears becoming evil, and takes on the identity of Locke in order to influence events . When the bugger war ends, he ends the fighting on Earth through the Locke Proposal, and becomes Hegemon, basically ruling the world.
    Graff
Although the character appears only at the beginning of the chapters and occasionally in the chapters as well, he is the main adult character in the novel. It is Graff who decides what will be done to Ender in order to shape him into a commander, and although he knows that this will put Ender through a lot of difficult situations, he says that, in the end, he will be Ender’s friend .
    Mazer Rackham
A fleet commander during the second invasion. He won surprisingly to everyone and is considered to be a hero and his name is known by everyone in the world. He should be dead, but he was but onto a spaceship that reached relativistic speed and so he had passed many decades without ageing so much himself . That was necessary because he was the one who had to teach the next great commander , who will lead the third invasion. So he became Ender’s enemy. Enemy because Rackham said that there is no better teacher than the enemy. For a long time he was Ender’s only companion.
  • Plot-Summary

Every chapter, except the last one, starts with two people talking privately. They talk about Ender and how he’s doing, improving and often they fear that he might become a monster because of them . One of the voices is always colonel Graff. And the other varies from chapter to chapter.
In the beginning of the novel Ender is only six years old and he has been chosen to save the world from the third invasion of the buggers, an alien race , who almost wiped human race out of existence during the second invasion. In the first chapter Andrew (real name of Ender) is getting his monitor removed, which usually meant, that he wasn’t suitable for the government program. The monitor showed what Ender felt , saw and heard and it’s removal made possible for bullies like his classmate Stilson to torture him. After school that day Stilson waited for Ender with a gang of boys . They wanted to beat him up, but thanks to Ender’s cleverness he had the chance to fight Stilson one to one. Surprisingly to everybody he knocked Stilson down, and he thought that tomorrow would be an even worse day if he’d left now. So he decided to win all the coming fight also, ha started to beat Stilson with his leg to his ribs, face, even his groin, and left when he was bleeding quite bad. Later colonel Graff came to the Wiggin house and asked Ender, why he had done so. He said that he had to win all the upcoming matches as well, not to get beaten up later himself. Graff said he was accepted and gave Ender the choice , to stay home or go to the Battle School. He chose to leave his beloved sister and go.
Most of the book is set in Battle School. Graff makes every other launchie hate him since the start. Graff has decided that he has to isolate Ender, so that he would keep improving to become a genius that was needed. Soon Ender is put into an army, older boys were divided into armies for playing the game in zero gravity, which was the most important thing in the school. He was not wanted by his commander, because he had now experience , was very small and he had to give a good soldier in return . Soon he was traded to a new army, where he was used properly in battle. Always as soon Ender was getting used to the situation and started feeling happy , things were made more difficult. Time passed and Ender was the most respect soldier in the school. He was the number one soldier in the rankings, and no-one was even close to him, he also held training sessions for elite soldier and launchies. He was so hated by some, who actually tried to kill him, but instead he killed their leader Bonzo, who had been Ender’s first commander, and every one else looked up to him, admiring him. Finally he was made commander and given his own army, which was handpicked and consisted mostly of launchies, who got promoted being quite young. Also all the rules were changed, to make Ender’s life difficult: they had their first battle in two weeks, instead of three months, he wasn’t allowed to make trades, had to fight every day, finally twice a day, before there was a two week pause between battles. His last battle was against two armies at once and Dragon army always won no matter how difficult things were, they always won.
After Battle School Ender had a three month vacation on Earth, he spent most of his time in and on the lake, because it reminded him zero gravity. Meanwhile Ender’s brother Peter plotted to take over the world, being only fourteen, and he used their sister’s help to do that. Valentine and Peter gained respect in the nets and became quite powerful . Of course they used false names: Demosthenes and Locke.
On the lake Valentine and Ender met and talked and after that he decided to go on with his studies and try to save the world. Ender and Graff then took a shuttle flight to Eros, where Command School was. There he mostly was trained on a simulator, until he was so good that he had to start controlling bigger fleets, that means he started to control squadron leaders. Squadron leaders were his old friends from the Battle School. They practiced until, the final exam for Ender came. Usually they were out-numbered four to one, but now they were a thousand to one, and of course there were a few more surprises. And against all odds , he won, barely, but he still won, everyone in the room came to congratulate him and the Graff told him that all the time he was fighting the buggers and that now the war is over. He was too exhausted and so he just went to sleep . He slept days and when he woke up his friends, the squadron leaders, told him what had happen on Eros and on Earth.
There were wars, and his brother Peter helped to stop them, so that he could get power himself. Now trials were held on Earth, to decide if all the actions taken were the right ones.
After a year , Valentine came and they both went with the first colony to a former bugger world. There Ender found a cocoon of a hive-queen, who spoke to him through it’s thoughts. Ender was forgiven by the bugger race, because they understood him and Ender promised to find a new world for the cocoon, so that the buggers could live again, and this time in peace with humans .
  • Quotations

    • I have to win this now, and for all time, or I’ll fight it every day and it will get worse and worse.” – Ender logic during fighting. Due to this logic he kills Stilson and Bonzo in self-defense during their one to one fights, though he was smaller and weaker than the both of them. He came to know that he killed only after the war.
    • In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them-..... I destroy them. I make it impossible for them to ever hurt me again. I grind them and grind them until they don’t exist .“ – After giving much thought to it Ender realized it. This is what he feels when he is fighting.
    • “This was supposed to be a game. Not a choice between his own grisly death and an even worse murder . I’m a murderer, even when I play. Peter would be proud of me.” – Ender thinking about the computer game in Battle School, after he had killed the Giant in the game. Later in the novel Graff stated that it was believed to be impossible to win the giant.

  • My Opinion

By now I have read the book twice, and the more I like it. This is probably the most interesting book I have ever read. The second time, to write this report, I read it through with a few days. I like that when the characters are but under more pressure all the time, they still won’t give up, they still keep fighting. I also like that it shows that it does not matter how old you are to make a difference, you just have to have a little genius in you. As a friend of mine, I’d like to mention that oddly the author didn’t describe much and when he did, he never described girl, only boys or the settings.
I recommend this book for everyone, except those, who absolutely and unconditionally are against a few sci-fi elements or who mostly want to read romance.
P.S. Still sorry for exceeding the minimum word number for the plot -summary so much.

Eventually, a new recruit cracks and attempts to leave. Kat and Paul have to beat him into submission. Later, the dugout suffers a direct hit. Luckily, the shell is a light one, and the concrete holds up against it. Three recruits crack, and one actually escapes the dugout. Before Paul can retrieve him, a shell whistles through the air and smashes the escaped recruit to bits. They have to bind another recruit to subdue him. Everyone else tries to play cards, but no one can concentrate on the game. Finally, the shelling lessens. The attack has come. Paul and his comrades throw grenades out of the dugout before jumping out. The French attackers suffer heavy losses from the German machine guns and grenades. The soldiers kill with a mindless fury after days of waiting helplessly in the dark while the bombs fell above them. The Germans repel the attack and reach the enemy lines. They wreak havoc and destruction before grabbing all of the provisions they can carry

The crops, farmers become pendent of banks. They turn into tenants, they share crops, in the end the bank dont give any more credit and take away the land. On the one hand the banks tried to help but at a very high price, the farmers don't understand at first, who is to blame at first. At the same time like a true naturalist, steinberg shows that banks and landovwners are also actually caught into system, so they dont have any choice, these are just the rules of the game. And ofcourse the whole pursuit of money and profit, men and banks become inhuman. Steinberg paints a picture of the growing anger of the people. For example produces such as coffe is burnt, people are starved but produces are burned to keep up the prices. Instead of givind the foood to the poor people they burn it. Peoples patience becomes to an end. They are mostly illiterate. They come from oklahoma, where dust, bad crops, erosion, finally forced them to leave their land. Moreover

Some of the things you will learn in THE CODEBREAKERS • How secret Japanese messages were decoded in Washington hours before Pearl Harbor. • How German codebreakers helped usher in the Russian Revolution. • How John F. Kennedy escaped capture in the Pacific because the Japanese failed to solve a simple cipher. • How codebreaking determined a presidential election, convicted an underworld syndicate head, won the battle of Midway, led to cruel Allied defeats in North Africa, and broke up a vast Nazi spy ring. • How one American became the world's most famous codebreaker, and another became the world's greatest. • How codes and codebreakers operate today within the secret agencies of the U.S. and Russia. • And incredibly much more. When they grow up, they play as members of important amateur teams or as a professional in teams competing in football ,,leagues". Professional football is as much a business as a sport. Rugby football was first played in 1823. In rugby every player is allowed to carry the ball. The ball is oval, not round. Each team contains 15 players. The oldest game of football in England is probably the football match which takes place at Ashburn on Shrove Tuesday every year. The game starts in the centre of the town, and the distance between two goals is two miles. The only rule is not to use motorcycles, cars and lorries in the game. In 1958 one team buried the ball. The other team didn't know and ran after them. Later first team took the ball and won. 3) JAMES WATT He was born in the small port of Greenock on the river Clyde in Scotland in 1736. Maybe the fact that Herman is German and was described as having 'the profile of Napoleon' could suggest that the relationship between the countess and Hermann reflects that of different countries during the time? Not really sure, hope it helped though. The tale opens in the "present" (about 1830) during a card game in the St Petersburg rooms of a Horse Guards officer named Narumov. Among the assembled guests is a young officer of engineers, Hermann, who is of German origin, and who never gambles, but observes the play keenly. Tomsky, another member of the company, remarks that his octogenarian grandmother, the Countess Anna Fedotovna, also does not "punt" despite the circumstances of an anecdote, which (summarised as follows) he then proceeds to narrate: Sixty years before (i.e
