US History: Native Americans and the first settlements

But Indians generally also recognize that their standards of living must be raised. Without giving up their unique cultural heritage, they have organized into tribal councils to try to help the federal government settle on long-range programs of education, health services, vocational training, resource planning, and financial credit. First Settlements Jamestown Colony (living conditions, population, plantations, import of slaves) In 1607, 144 English men and boys established the Jamestown colony, named after King James I. The colonists were told that if they did not generate any wealth, financial support for their efforts would end. Many of the men spent their days vainly searching for gold. As a consequence, the colonists spent little time farming. Food supplies dwindled. MALARIA and the harsh winter besieged the colonists, as well

In AD 985 Vikings sailing from Iceland to Greenland were blown westward off their course and the Vikings sighted the coast of Labrador peninsula. The report of forested areas encouraged further exploration because the colonies in Greenland which belonged to the Vikings lacked lumber. In AD 1000 Leif Ericson became the first European to land in North America. The first colony was established what was described as Vinland by the Vikings. It was located on the northernmost tip of todays Newfoundland. There has also been a theory that the Vikings penetrated Hudson Bay and reached the Great Lakes region but recent investigations have cast serious doubt on it. The Greenland colony died out during the 15th century and the Viking adventures in Canada must have come to an end long before that time. The Colony of New France

Canada - history and provinces.

They just searched better for living places and followed their prey and they didn't even know they were on a different continent. The first explorers were Norse seafarers known as Vikings. As they sailed from Iceland to Greenland in AD 985, they were blown far off their course and they saw the coast what must have been Labrador. The forested areas of Canada's coast encouraged further explorations, because their settlement lacked lumber. They established a colony, what they called Vinland on Newfoundland. It died out during the 14th and 15th centuries. 500 years later Europeans started looking for a waterway to Asia, because travelling with spices over land wasn't very safe anymore. The first explorer was Christopher Kolumbus who reached America's shore in 1492, although he thought it was Asia. The next explorer was John Cabot in 1497. He sailed to Newfoundland. The first European who explored further inland was Jacques Cartier in 1534.

Democracy in the US

colonists had come to the New World in hopes of enriching themselves, some came because Britain forced them to leave and some because of the opportunity , which did not exist for them in Europe, to own land or practice a trade. But there were also reasons, which had great influence on the shaping of the political system of the USA. For example, William Penn, a member of the Religious Society of Friends, was granted a large tract of land by King James II. There Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania, where he set up laws protecting freedom of religion and speech. People fleeing persecution in Europe eagerly settled in the colony. Men like Penn set an example which helped spread democratic ideals and practice throughout the colonies. As time passed, the colonists began to present the governing power that Britain exercised over them. In 1774, a group of leaders from the colonies met and formed the Continental

Puritanism in John Winthrop "A model of Christian Charity"

A modell of Christian charity, also known as A City on a Hill, is the kind of Puritan literature example that can fade the suspicious reader’s doubts in the Puritan main ideology and beliefs. At least, this is how it seemed to me. This sermon can be seen as a gateway to the Puritan society’s attitude and mindset as it is one of the most classical examples of the Puritan era literature. Although John Winthrop was the leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was filled with corrupted chiefs, he vigorously emphasizes in his writings the unity of community, love of others and morals of equality. This sermon also represents the hope of the colony in God after repudiating the Church of England. In his sermon A modell of Christian charity, reliance to the Bible is the key element which reveals in the interpretation of God itself and morals of the Bible. He begins by offering

1534 to the Indian village of Stadacona, now Quebec, he heard the village called ,,kanata" and took that to be the name of the country. However, in some Huron dialects, ,,Kanata" means settlement or a village. In the Mohawk language, a similar word means simply a place. In Cartier's map of St. Lawrence, he put tha name Canada on the area between the Saguenay River and what is now Quebec City. In the 16th century mapmaker, Mercator, used the name New France for the French colony along the St. Lawrence, but Dutch and English mapmakers gave that name a much broader meaning, extending it to all French colonies in the New World. After the English Conquest of the French colony of Acada in 1713, the name Canada started to be applied to the whole St. Lawrence colony and not just to a part of it. After the British victory on the Plains of Abraham in 1759, the name Quebec started to be used for the entire French territory. Along the St

state until its demise in the 13th century. Direct sea trade with Europe, established in the 15th century, had much impact on the area's inhabitants, many of whom actively traded with the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and other Europeans. Forts and castles, many of which still dot the Ghanaian coast today, were constructed by Europeans to protect their trade interests. Although trading was originally centred on the gold that was readily available in the area (and from which the future British colony the Gold Coast would take its name), the focus shifted to the lucrative slave trade in the 17th century. The area later became known for growing cacao, the source of cocoa beans. Introduced there in the late 19th century, cacao continues to provide an important export for Ghana. Ghana's climate, like that of the rest of the Guinea Coast, is determined largely by the interplay of two air masses: a hot, dry continental air mass that forms over the Sahara and a

Australia

The first people to inhabit Australia were the ancestors of the Aborigines, who arrived over 40,000 years ago. The first Europeans to sight the Australian continent were the Dutch in 1606. They called what they had found New Holland, but made no attempt at settlement. In 1770, James Cook sailed there, mapping the east coast of Australia, which he named New South Wales and claimed for Britain. Britain started sending its convicts to the place now called Sydney, and they established the colony of New South Wales. This day is celebrated as Australia's national day, Australia day. Most of the people there are of British origin, with a culture and outlook similar to the UK and USA. In 1901, five colonies became states linked by one federal government the Commonwealth of Australia. English is the official language, and is spoken and written in a distinct variety known as Australian English. It is believed that there used to be around 200-300 Australian Aboriginal

As a result, a wooden fence with watchtowers surrounded the homes that had been built and the gates in the fence were locked at night. By 1622 the Pilgrim Fathers had built a fort to protect themselves. It also served as a meeting place to discuss issues of government within the new colony. Over the next few years, as life for Puritans became more uncomfortable in England, more and more made the journey across the Atlantic. By 1630, their numbers were such that the Puritans were able to establish the Massachusetts Bay Company and establish Boston, which was to grow as a major port. Despite the privations of 1620, the Puritans founded colonies that thrived and their success depended on fishing, shipbuilding, trade and farming. Essay about England

Was the British Empire a good thing that enlarged the world creating possibilities for everyone or was it just a way for some to gain power and wealth? How is the modern-day Commonwealth different? The British Empire used to be one of the largest and wealthiest empires in the world. Its prosperity started at the early 1600s and reached its high peak at the end of the World War I. The Empire faded into the Commonwealth at the end of 1930s as one colony after another gained its independence. After studying the topic I would say that it cannot be said whether the British Empire was a very good or a very bad thing. Of course any kind of oppression should not be approved of and actually the Empire and native British forced on their way of life and culture to the colonies. On the other hand the Empire also helped its subjects to develop in a positive sense. In overall Britain ruled several parts of the world, like India, parts of Africa, ...

Hinduism is dominated by the Indians who came to the country in the early 1800s, while Islam varies between Afro-Guyanese and Indian-Guyanese. When the first Europeans arrived in the area around 1500, Guyana was inhabited by the Arawak and Carib tribes of American Indians. Although Guyana was first sighted by Christopher Columbus during his third voyage in 1498. In 1831 the three separate colonies became a single British colony known as British Guiana. Escaped slaves formed their own settlements known as Maroon communities, but with the abolition of slavery in 1834 many of the former slaves began to settle in urban areas. During the Second World War, the United States arranged for its airforce to use British airports in South America, including those in British Guiana. Guyana achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 and became a republic on 23 February 1970.

Austraalia ajalugu

Sometimes prisoners would be sentenced to transportation. After the American War of Independence (17751783) transportation wasn't possible anymore and the government began looking for another place for the transportees which was selected to be Botany Bay. On 13.05.1787 11 ships set sail from Portsmouth. 759 convicts were on board, most of them guarded with Captain Arthur Philip in command. The reason for founding a colony in Australia wasn't the riddance of unwanted people. The British may have hoped to found a naval base in the Pacific, sources of timer and flax. They arrived on 26.01.1788. Things were hard for them and food was short. Things gradually improved and a second and third fleet arrived in years 1790 and 1791. Convicts worked on government land but since 1973 those who behaved well were freed and given land. The first free settlers arrived also that year.

Indians

LONG BEFORE the white man set foot on American soil, the American Indians, or rather the Native Americans, had been living in America. When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Indians populating America north of present-day Mexico. And they had been living in America for quite some time. It is believed that the first Native Americans arrived during the last ice-age, approximately 20,000 - 30,000 years ago through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The oldest documented Indian cultures in North America are Sandia (15000 BC), Clovis (12000 BC) and Folsom (8000 BC) Although it is believed that the Indians originated in Asia, few if any of them came from India. The name "Indian" was first applied to them by Christopher Columbus, who believed that the mainland and islands of America were part of the Indies, in Asia. So, when the Europeans started to arrive in the 16th- an...

After stopping at various other islands in the Bahamas, the fleet reached Cuba and a month later Haiti. On Christmas Eve the Santa Maria ran on rocks on the northern coast of Haiti and it was impossible to use her again. Columbus Left her grew with instructions to build a colony there and set sail for Spain on Niña. The voyage home was a rough one, and Columbus did not reach Spain until March 1493. He was received by the King and Queen a month later. He gave them the birds, plants and six Indians he had brought back with him as well as what little gold he had obtained. The rulers were pleased with Columbus' gifts and with his tales of discovery. A second voyage started on September 25, 1493. Columbus found some gold on his

Tundmatu tüve identifitseerimine

Tundmatu tüve identifitseerimine 1. Makromorfoloogilised tunnused Visuaalselt hindasin tundmatu tüve kolooniaid, kui nad olid kasvanud kuus päeva toiteagaril toatemperatuuril. Tunnused Tundmatu tüvi Koloonia: kuju ümar profiil kerkinud, servajoon kumer konsistents sirge värvus limajas, läikiv valkjas 2. Rakulised omadused Gramreaktiivsuse määramiseks teostasin grami järgi värvimise. Kuigi mikroskoobis vaadates olid enamus lühikesed üksikud (agregeerumata) punased pulgad (etanool pesi kristallvioleti-joodi kompleksi välja), leidus ka osa lillaka tooniga rakke, kes olid samuti lühikesed üksikud pulgad. Täiendavalt tegin KOHi lüüsi testi, mis näitas, et tegemist on siiski gramnegatiivsete rakkudega (tekkis iseloomulik limajas konsistents). Tundmatu tüve liikuvuse uurimise jaoks kasutasin poolvedelat söödet (Hugh-Leifsoni sööde), millesse olin eelnevalt teinud pistekülvi. Külvi...

Jamaica

It is about 620 kilometres (385 mi) northeast of the Central American mainland, 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 190 kilometres (120 mi) west of the island of Hispaniola, on which Haiti and the Dominican Republic are situated. Its indigenous Arawakan-speaking Taíno inhabitants named the island Xaymaca, meaning either the "Land of Springs," or the "Land of Wood and Water". Formerly a Spanish possession known as Santiago, it later became the British West Indies Crown colony of Jamaica. It is the third most populous anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. I chosed Jamica because there are many things what I like in this country. Mostly I like Jamaica´s music, culture and climate. Geography Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and the most populous English speaking island there. The island of Jamaica is home to the Blue Mountains inland and is surrounded by a narrow coastal plain

unskillful. At that time, there were about 300000 Aborigines in Australia and luckily for the Brits, not all were hostile. Phillip tried hard to befriend with the natives and he succeeded with Bennelong. Phillip had a hut built for Bennelong on the point where the Sydney Opera House now stands. The second fleet arrived in 1790. That fleet brought soldiers that were called the New South Wales Corps. Their mission was to keep law and order in the colony. However, a great number of the soldiers were corrupted and because there was no currency in the colony, they used rum as the means of exchange. That meant that all soldiers were always drunk and made more mischief than good. 3 In 1809, a new Governor, Macquarie, began a much-needed program of restoring order in the colony

Columbus who thought that he had reached to India. COLONIAL AMERICA As far as people know were the Vikings first European settlers to visit America. but in 1492, an Italian sailor called Christopher Columbus reached southern America when he was looking for a sea route from Europe to India. He is called to be the man who discovered America. In 1607 two very different groups of English people came to America. a group of farmers began a colony in Jamestown, Virginia. They had to fought with indians and most of them died because there were many diseases and the didn't have enough to eat. But the daughter of an Indian chief, Pocahontas, helped them. The farmers discovered that it was easy to grow tobacco in Virginia, so they bought black people as slaves to work on the fields. They found a big market for their tobacco in Europe. In 1620 another group of English people landed in America. They

Bora Bora

In the 1700's, Chief Puni ruled the island as well as clans on other islands including Tahaa, Raiatea, and Maupiti. European explorer, James Cook, landed on Tahaa and Raiatea in 1769 and on Bora Bora in 1770. Approximately 50 years later, the London Missionary Society began introducing Christianity on the island. In 1890, they established a Protestant church here. Bora Bora remained independent until French colonizers forced the Queen off the island and took the area as a colony in 1888. The island played a strategic role during World War II when the US used it as a military supply base. In 1946, Bora Bora, along with other French islands settlements, became French overseas territories and were granted the right to vote. In 2004, Bora Bora and the rest of French Polynesia earned administrative autonomy and now have their own president.
