Dear Mrs

Smith, I hope that you don't mind me contacting you after such a long time. I also hope that you remember me as your student from high school. I am writing to ask your advice on my choice about continueing my studies. I have always wanted to be an artist, but my parents haven't approved my choice. I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. but the three years spent studying it, i have come to an understanding that this field of carreer is not for me. I wish to pursue my studies in the field of Fine Arts, but i don't want to upset my parents. I would very much appreciate your advice on this issue. Thank you for your time....

Work or university

If a student decides to go to work after finishing secondary school, he does not have the best advantages for getting a good job. Today employers value high-quality vocational qualifications, so it might not be as good as choice as continuing your education. However, if a student chooses to continue his education, he has many possibilities, for example, university or vocational education. At a university he can choose what he wants to study and for how long, for instance, to get a bachelors degree he has to complete three years of study at a university. And after graduating from university he can, continue with post-garduate studies to complete a masters degree an...

Education

Well, how should you or I raise kids? Or if we don't want to be parents, how do we help educate children in general? Most mature adults feel a responsibility to both self-education and assisting others; the majority even tax themselves to help educate others. Schooling choices are varied. If money was not problematic I would send my kids to the best schools. If money is lacking (and so far, it is) I'd send them to the best public schools within reasonable proximity. Home education is an alternative idea, and I won't rule it out, but need to learn more about it first. My hunch is, even average Seattle public schools can turn out well rounded, capable students, if the students receive excellent support at home. I say this b...

On friendship

Besides, who are you that you should be setting a price upon your friendship? It is enough for any man that he has the divine power of making friends, and he must leave it to that power to determine who his friends shall be. For, though you may choose the virtuous to be your friends, they may not choose you; indeed, friendship cannot grow where there is any calculated choice . It comes, like sleep, when you are not thinking about it; and you should be grateful, without any misgiving, when it comes. So no man who knows what friendship is ever gave up a friend because he turns out to be disreputable. His only reason for giving up a friend is that he has ceased to care for him; and, when that happens, he should reproach himself for this mortal poverty of affection, not the friend for having...

The Life of Dante, the Inferno of Dante

Dante is represented as truth, intelligence, and love, and Pound generates a positive portrayal of Dante's work. Tate, Maritain, and Pound give insightful and pertinent observations of the Inferno, however, one major aspect, which was overlooked in their critiques, was the theological truths Dante uncovered on his imaginary journey through Hell. The reality of God, the Creator's love and man's choice is evidenced throughout the Inferno. On this spiritual pilgrimage, Dante has lost his way and tries to get back on the right path to gain salvation, but many temptations are faced along the way. Dante uses allegory in his story to depict these temptations or sin. In the dark wood he encounters a leopard, lion, and a she-wolf. The leopard stands for lust, the lion for pride, and the she-wolf for greed. He takes the reader through the murky, disg...

Canada

The Aboriginal population of Canada is a diverse population with distinct cultures, languages, religious beliefs and political systems. There are many ways of defining the Aboriginal population, which can result in different estimates of its size. There is no single or "correct" definition and the choice of a definition depends on the purpose for which it is to be used. The First nations are Indians, Metis and Inuits, but the term Indian is called inappropriate, so now they are called the Native peoples. There are also legal terms for them and it applies to a native person who is registered under the Indian Act and it means that they are entitled to free medical care, education and training. Some of them, whose ancestors signed treatie...

Islam

With Muhammad's death in 632, disagreement broke out over who would succeed him as leader of the Muslim community. Umar ibn alKhattab, a prominent companion of Muhammad, nominated Abu Bakr, who was Muhammad's intimate friend and collaborator. Others added their support and Abu Bakr was made the first caliph. This choice was disputed by some of Muhammad's companions, who held that Ali ibn Abi Talib, his cousin and soninlaw, had been designated his successor. Abu Bakr's immediate task was to avenge a recent defeat by Byzantine (or Eastern Roman Empire) forces, although he first had to put down a rebellion by Arab tribes in an episode known as the Ridda wars, or "Wars of Apostasy". The territory of the Caliphate in 750His death in 634 resulted in the succ...

STYLE The term "style" is polysemantic (has many meanings): a Latin word "stilus" originally meant a writing instrument used by ancient people. Already in classical Latin the meaning was extended to denote the manner of expressing one's ideas in written or oral form. Jonathan Swift defined style as "proper words in proper places". In present day English the word "style" is used in about a...

Houses of parliament

Charles Barry's design incorporated a clock tower. The dials were to be thirty feet in diameter, the quarter chimes were to be struck on eight bells, and the hours were to be struck on a 14 ton bell. Barry invited Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy, a clockmaker of reputation, to submit a design and price for constructing such a clock. No doubt Vulliamy was pleased to be the clockmaker of choice for what was then to be the largest clock in the world, but other enterprising firms were not happy with the manner in which they had no opportunity to compete for the contract. Subsequently, the Astronomer Royal, Sir George Airy, was appointed as referee for the new clock and produced a specification in 1846. A key requirement of the specification was that the clock was to strike the first blow of each hour correct to one second in time. T...

Anglo - Saxon

Religion The indigenous pre-Christian belief system of the Anglo-Saxons was a form of Germanic paganism and therefore closely related to the Old Norse religion, as well as other Germanic pre-Christian cultures. Christianity gradually replaced the indigenous religion of the Saxons in England around the 7th and 8th centuries. Christianity was introduced into Northumbria and Mercia by monks from Ireland, but the Synod of Whitby settled the choice for Roman Christianity. As the new clerics became the chroniclers, the old religion was partially lost before it was recorded. Despite these prohibitions, numerous elements of the pre-Christian culture of the Anglo-Saxon people survived the Christianisation process. Dress materials Anglo-Saxon clothing usually utilized only three types of fabric. Wool was a coarse material which was used for most garments. Lower class people, such as slaves and...
