The Most Influential Figures in British History

In my opinion Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill are the ones who stand out and have had the biggest impact on British history. Firstly, Elizabeth I made a great impression on British history as she kept England from major wars during her reign, the kingdom expanded and she supported culture. The rule of Elizabeth I can be called a peaceful time as England did not enter any huge conflicts. She managed to keep good relations with other great countries. However, the defeat of the Spanish Armada left no one questioning the superiority of the British navy. In addition, the kingdom’s territories grew during her reign, Virginia in America being named after „The Virgin Queen“. Queen Elizabeth I also valued culture. Arts flourished while Elizabeth was in power, most notably the theatre. She had the first real theatres built allowing poets like Shakespeare to create masterpieces. It is no wonder that Elizabeth I’s reign was named „The Golden Era“ as it

Gabriel rejoined the cause against his father's will again, stating it was his duty as a soldier so Benjamin also decided to join, leaving the rest of the children in the care of their aunt Charlotte, the sister of Martin's deceased wife. They knew that the Colonials couldn't defeat the British and so with the help of Col. Harry Burwell Benjamin organized a militia to keep the British in the south until French Navy arrived to assist. To combat the militia Tavington had to pursue more brutal tactics to draw Martin out. So he tracked Martin's family to their refuge with Charlotte and burnt down her plantation. However, the family escaped, and were led to a safe haven by Gabriel and Martin. Gabriel got to marry Anne Howard

The Noble Savage in the 20th Century Fiction

Then something happens that sends the hero on an adventure. The breaking point on his road is meeting a teacher an encounter that gives him the ability to face the adversary of the story. In the end the hero faces his villain, emerges a winner, detaches himself from his outcast status and becomes a significant part of the society. It could be said that the most important part of the hero's progress is this teacher, someone who gives guidance and the knowledge how to defeat the antagonist. Commonly this guide is from a different world and a stranger to the main character. He has alien ways and an exotic nature. This mentor needs to be a stranger because nothing can be learned from something common and known. He provides the moral of the story and initiates the change in both the hero and the consumer. But it all happens behind the scenes. The consumer needs the hero to identify himself with someone but needs the mentor to get the big lesson in the end. This

„Nelson’s management style could have come from a modern textbook“

Today even at the hardest boardroom battle almost no-one has to feel the level of responsibility that Nelson had in 1798. He bored responsibilities that are also described in modern books, there he mentioned important themes. Those themes, for example developing teamwork, are still very valuable. In 1798 he faced challenge when in continental Europe controlled by revolutionary France,. In Toulon French were making big fleet and army. When Nelson wasn't even 40 yet, he was choosed to find and defeat the 17 French ships and 300 troop ships. He never haven't commanded a fleet before. Before he put together his own ships, he knew captains and rest by reputation. When all team came together then everybody were working well together because he knew how to open people. He involved them into open-minded discussions and he never reproofed or brainstormed the team because of that. At the same time team always knew who have responsibility and because of all that good

The Importance of English History

The inhabitants were cut off from any tribes that could support them and therefore had to survive on their own. As for more, soon invaders began to change the native population. The Celts, the Romans, the Vikings, then the Normandians all wanted to live somewhere, gain power and finally, settle down. Since they were not the first ones to live in England, it was a little bit easier for them to adopt the new land, yet none of their rule lasted long enough to defeat British nature from toe to top. Even now some parts of England have inhabitants whose distant relatives and great-great-great...parents origin from the first ones to ever settle down on the island. To conclude, it could be said that the most interesting part of the history is watching the development of a nation and its life with the native nature. Both change through time, yet neither disappear nor surrender completely to another. The importance of

Natural disasters

alternate dimension, but this is only theory at this time. We can only hope to one day locate, and contain all the whirlpools in the expansive oceans of our world. Speaking of worlds, we come to our last natural disaster: meteors. These missiles from space are sent, by some unknown force, hurtling through space into our planet. Often these meteoroids are burned away by our own natural meteor defence, the atmosphere. But sometimes, the atmosphere is not enough to defeat these icy space boulders, and they will come crashing into Earth causing destruction on a worldwide scale. Earthquakes and tidal waves are being released upon the world to wreak havoc are often the after effects. The Earth's winds also carry the dust, sent into the sky from impact, across the globe. This dust can become so thick that it blocks out the sun, killing off all life on the planet. But, for a counterweight to the meteors, humans are nearing completion of a worldwide tactical nuclear

Satire in Lilliput

Gulliver's first adventure takes place in Lilliput. Gulliver gets shipwrecked and finds himself tied down by a considerable number of little people called Lilliputians. The Lilliputians stood only six inches high. During this time Swift recognized that England was also small in stature but was dominant force and had a great influence in Europe. England, despite its small size, had the potential to defeat any nation that might try to conquer them. Swift relates this situation with the Lilliputians. They only stood six inches tall but had the power to take on the, "ManMountain", Gulliver. The ability of the Lilliputians to capture someone ten times their size can be seen as reinforcing their strength as a small nation, such as England. Thus becoming and remaining a great and powerful country. Swift's personal life surfaced when Queen Anne represented the Lilliputian Empress. She was

St. James's Park is both the oldest and smallest of London's parks, built by Henry VIII in 1536. The righthand side will be the Cabinet War Rooms. The Churchill War Rooms played host to Winston Churchill and his wartime government during the dark days of World War II. Safe in their underground rooms beneath London's Whitehall, they met and slept in bunkers to plan Hitler's defeat. If we would go to the southside of the lake we will cross the bridge in the middle. This will give as one of the most celebrated views of Buckingham Palace. We will walk down the Mall and past St. James's Palace and make some photos of the guards. Then we will go across Green Park to Piccadilly, where we can do some shopping. Afterwards we will walk east towards Piccadilly Circus. Irene Adler enjoys dominating others partially because of her natural personality, and partially because she is insecure. She feels a strong desire to defeat others and to show that she is dominant because she feels inadequate and this is her way of attempting to convince herself that she is not. This was a particular defeat for Carl as trainers told him he couldn't practice sprint and jumping at the same time. So he should have renounced to follow the footprints of Jesse Owens. Carl is stubborn and in 1982 improves in the long jump (8,76 m) and becomes more constant in 100 m. So in 1983 he was ready to do the general attempts for the Olympic games of the following year. When they refuse, he shoots one of them. The drivers continue in the other trucks until they get stuck again. They send off the young girls and continue on foot toward Udine. As they march, one of the drivers is shot dead by the easily frightened rear guard of the Italian army. Another driver marches off to surrender himself, while Henry and the remaining driver seek refuge at a farmhouse. When they rejoin the retreat the following day, chaos has broken out: soldiers, angered by the Italian defeat, pull commanding officers from the melee and execute them on sight. The battle police seize Henry, who, at a crucial moment, breaks away and dives into the river. After swimming a safe distance downstream, Henry boards a train bound for Milan. He hides beneath a tarp that covers stockpiled artillery, thinking that his obligations to the war effort are over and dreaming of his return to Catherine. English involvement in Ireland. The English crown did not begin asserting full control of the island until after the English Reformation, when questions over the loyalty of Irish vassals provided the initial impetus for a series of military campaigns between 1534 and 1691. This period was also marked by an English policy of plantation which led to the arrival of thousands of English and Scottish Protestant settlers. As the military and political defeat of Gaelic Ireland became more clear in the early seventeenth century, the role of religion as a new division in Ireland became more pronounced. From this period on, sectarian conflict became a recurrent theme in Irish history. The overthrow, in 1613, of the Catholic majority in the Irish parliament was realised principally through the creation of numerous new boroughs, all of which were Protestant-dominated. By the end of the seventeenth century

Random acts of sabotage occur against soldiers and the coal mine. The invaders, under orders from above, impose repressive measures to keep the production going. Their commander follows his order knowing that, in fact, there is little hope of stopping the sabotage for more than a few days at a time. The conquerors say of themselves and their futile efforts to defeat the undefeated motivation of the townspeople, "The flies have conquered the flypaper!" Soon, all semblance of harmony is ended. The occupiers feel isolated and surrounded by hate. Coal production grinds to a halt due mostly to the fact that "Allied" planes have been dropping sticks of dynamite for the people to use to sabotage railroads, food supplies, power sources, and the mine itself. Heartless

" 1 The man got irritated and shouted her out of his house. The girl turned and walked out as if nothing had happened, the other children staring enviously at her. Just before the door she stopped and asked them without turning, "And for how long are you planning to be the Devil's dolls?" Loveless smiled and replied quietly, "Sooner or later we'll join your forces and defeat them once and for all!" The other two exchanged a scared look, yet said nothing. The man was too angry to follow the conversation. Heartless left the "Devil's" orphanage and went to see the Royal Church, where all homeless people could stay for the night. At least she had heard so. She herself couldn't enter any church before, because the Puppet Master wanted them to stay away from all sacred placed he was a true Demon, after all! But finally, the long-wanted freedom had arrived

They were not centrally governed. The Celts brought iron working, iron ploughs and metal swords, horses, wheels and chariots - all these things gave them an instant superiority over the native tribes. The Celts built a number of hill forts throughout the region. The society was divided into warrior aristocracy, agricultural commons and the priests, the druids. *Caesar in Britain - Britain was very rich in minerals but that wasn't the main reason Caesar wanted to defeat it. He could clearly see that Britain was a threat to his latest and greatest conquest - France. He invaded Britain twice, in 55 and 54 BC. The first invasion was unsuccessful - it gained a beachhead on the coast of Kent but achieved little else. The second was more successful, the Celts asked for truce. However it wasn't a victory he had imagined and Julius Caesar never returned to Britain after that. The island was left undisturbed for nearly a century.

Summary of philosophy of right (õiguse filosoofia kokkuvõte)

political and legal institutions ought to reflect the social and geographical character of each particular community. Kant Idea for a universal History with a cosmopolitan purpose Kant was a Calvinist. Natural law preditermines every natural event. But history can not be predicted because men act chaotically. Kant seeks to prove his claim that rational and moral autonomy will inevitably defeat the compulsions of self-interested individualism. Kant seeks to achieve this by advancing a hierarchical account of development of world history. In writing from the perspective of a universal future history, Kant valorizes an unrealized future state (though he is aware, however, of the problem of theorizing without empirical basis, recognizing the appearance of irrationality that such an enterprise exhibits and criticizing Herder for extracting conclusions from speculative pyschologizing).

History of Football

grass surface with a ball roughly equivalent to a softball today. Medieval football Despite some signs of the game we love today in the Ancient World, the true development of football came in Medieval Britain by and large, although there are signs of equivalents across Europe (the majority of which were exported). Known as Shrovetide football or Medieval football, the inception point has been claimed as the 3rd century after the defeat of the Romans, but the practice itself was first recorded in the 9th century as part of the Historia Britonum (you can see one or two of the surviving engravings of medieval football at the British Museum). Typically played during the annual Carnival, the other tag of `mob football' gives you a sense of what it was actually like to be involved in such games. Held between neighbouring towns and villages with no limit on the number of players and

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique?

legitimate. Utilitarian thinkers believe this can be disregarded as to avoid a greater evil, authorities inevitably have to break the law. Michael Ignatieff (2004) states that governments needn't follow national and international law as precisely in case violating this law will avoid bigger crimes. “Sticking too firmly to the rule of law simply allows terrorists too much leeway to exploit our freedoms. Abandoning the rule of law altogether betrays our most valued institutions. To defeat evil, we may have to traffic in evils: indefinite detention of subjects, coercive interrogations, targeted assassinations, even pre-emptive war. These 7 are evils because each strays from national and International law and because they kill people or deprive them of freedom without due process. They can be justified only because they prevent greater evil.” (Ignatieff, 2004)

Topic - London

William granted the citizens of London special privileges while building a castle in the corner of the city to keep them under control. This castle was expanded by later kings and is now known as the Tower of London. The city grew in wealth and population during the Middle Ages. In 1100 its population was around 18,000 but after 200 years it had grown to nearly 100,000. However disaster struck during the Black Death, when London lost nearly a third of its population. After the defeat of the Spanish Armada, stability in politics allowed the city to grow even more. In 1603, James VI of Scotland came to the throne of England, essentially uniting the two countries. An assassination attempt was made on him on the 5th of November in 1605, now known as the famous Gunpowder Plot. Plague caused more problems for London later in that century, culminating in the Great Plague. That was the last major outbreak in Europe, possibly thanks to the Great Fire of London in 1666

Discuss the representation of the generation of fathers in Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”

"merry cosmopolitan sentimentality of the fathers now transformed in a patriotic grief of their children. The Fathers were Russians, who passionately wanted to become French; the sons were raised as French and passionately wanted to become Russians. Fathers and Sons situates this generational conflict within family relations. In this essay, the ways how Turgenev represents the generation of Fathers in Fathers and Sons is discussed. Fathers and Sons is set in between Russia's defeat in the Crimean War and the Emancipation of the Serfs a socially challenging area. Mid-19 th century Russian intellectual life was characterized by a radical split between the `fathers' and `sons'. The older generation was young during the heavily oppressive rule of Tsar Nikolai I. For them, Tsar Alexander II's reforms were very anticipated and progressive. However, the `sons' or younger intellectuals saw these reforms were not fast or far-reaching enough. Thus, the generation of fathers is

with humans. Quotations · "I have to win this now, and for all time, or I'll fight it every day and it will get worse and worse." Ender logic during fighting. Due to this logic he kills Stilson and Bonzo in self-defense during their one to one fights, though he was smaller and weaker than the both of them. He came to know that he killed only after the war. · ,,In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them-..... I destroy them. I make it impossible for them to ever hurt me again. I grind them and grind them until they don't exist." After giving much thought to it Ender realized it. This is what he feels when he is fighting.

Sixteen-year-old Frederick was indeed nearly broken psychologically by his ordeal under Covey, but finally rebelled against the beatings and fought back. Covey lost out on a confrontation with Frederick and never tried to beat him again. This incident was kept under wraps possibly because Covey was afraid the news of Frederick's victory would ruin his reputation as a "slave breaker" or he was simply ashamed of his defeat. In 1837, Douglass met Anna Murray, a free African-American, in Baltimore while he was still held in slavery. They were married soon after he obtained his freedom; Douglass escaped slavery on September 3, 1838, boarding a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland dressed in a sailor's uniform and carrying identification papers provided by a free black seaman.
