Assignment 2 (pp. 43–84)
  • Define the following words and expressions (considering the context ) and reproduce (in your own words) the situations in which they appear in the book:
the marrow of something (44) - The soft stuff inside of a bone is called marrow. ... From this biological kind of marrow comes a figurative meaning of marrow — the essence of something. S – The convent is on top of the high hill and from its window the Sisters can see the marrow of the town.
to be privy to something (46) - If you're privy to something, you've been let in on a secret or know about something that most people don't. ... The adjective privy comes from the Latin privatus, meaning “private,” and describes someone who has knowledge of secret or confidential information. S- Marie is privy to both worlds of Evil knowledge.
a habit (49) - a long, loose garment worn by a member of a religious order . S – Marie asks if she gets a habit when Leopolda tells her that Marie will be sleeping behind the stove.
a stigma (59) - (in Christian tradition) marks corresponding to those left on Christ 's body by the Crucifixion, said to have been impressed by divine favour on the bodies of St Francis of Assisi and others . S – Leopolda is explaining how stigmata appears on Marie palm.
mealy (60) - Lacking healthy coloring; pale . S – Marie couldn’t help what she did. She had already smiled in a saint’s mealy forgiveness.
to throb (66) - pulsate steadily. S – Nector couldn’t help but feel how bad Marie’s hand hurt and throb.
to hibernate (72) - spend the winter in a dormant state. S – Lulu thinks that Rushes Bear eats as though she had hibernated all winter.
to lounge (76) - lie, sit, or stand in a relaxed or lazy way. S – Cats were lounging, sprinting etc. on every warm log.
mica (79) - a shiny silicate mineral with a layered structure, found as minute scales in granite and other rocks, or as crystals. It is used as a thermal or electrical insulator. S – the front was fitted of mortared stones set with jewelled windows , jagged shards of gleaming mica.
avid (82) - having an eager desire for. S – Lulu feels that cats made her one of them - sleek, without mercy and avid , hungry upon defenseless body.
  • Explain the following literary terms . Learn and use them in your discussion of the book:
Antagonist - a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary.
Irony - the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect
Oxymoron - a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. faith unfaithful kept him falsely true ).
Hyperbole - exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally .
Epithet - an adjective or phrase expressing a quality or attribute regarded as characteristic of the person or thing mentioned.
  • Comment on the shifts in the setting of the three chapters . What is the mode of narration in these stories? Are the narrators always reliable? The first chapter setting is in convent, the second is outside near the convent (road), and the third one is reservation and the island , in every chapters there is a 1st pr.narration. Reliable.
    ‘Saint Marie’
  • Introduce the narrator of ‘Saint Marie’. Why does she consider herself ignorant ? What is the purpose of her wanting to join the convent? Interpret the quotation : ‘I had the mail-order Catholic soul . . .’ (44). Marie, 14- year -old girl. Maybe since she isn’t pure blood Indian . She want to enter the white community (to belong there). Her wish is not to
  • go to church but to come in to town where the shops and people are.
  • Describe the Sacred Heart Convent. Explain the sentence: ‘Where the Dark One had put in thick bush, liquor, wild dogs , and Indians’ (45). It is on top of the highest hill, the windbreak is planted before the bar „for the purposes of tornado insurance “. Buildings of painted brick, gleaming white. The cracked whitewash and swallows nesting in the busted ends of eaves. Boards sawed the size of broken windowpanes and the fruit trees, stripped. Goldenrob rubbed up the walls. It was a poor convent. Humble, ragtag, out in the middle of no place . End of the world to some. Where the maps stopped. - Satan took over with certain things, including alcohol and "Indians."
  • Sum up the influence of Catholicism on the Chippewas ( based on what you have read so far).
Catholicism hasn't replaced Native American customs and religion so much as claimed its own jurisdiction within those customs, perhaps the Catholic God isn't entirely responsible for everything around them at the reservation.
  • Present Sister Leopolda. How is she different from other nuns? What is her attitude to Indians? Perhaps she is sent to test her Sisters’ faith, here and there, like the spot -checker in a factory . In her class , Sister Leopolda carries a long oak pole for opening high windows. She uses it for catching Satan by surprise . She will see him if he enters. She has a stringer of children who can only breathe if she says the word. The other Sisters had long ago gone blank and given up on Satan. He slept for them. They never notice his comings and goings. But Leopolda keeps track of Satan and knows his habits , minds he burrows in, deep spaces where he is hiding, she know as much about him as Marie grandma. Leopolda perhaps doesn’t like Indians, she always says to Marie that the Dark One wants her most of all. Marie stands out for her.
  • Analyse the relationship between Marie and Sister Leopolda. Give examples of the sadistic tendencies of the latter . How are the girl’s pain and suffering brought home to the reader? Are the two heroines in any way similar ? Sister Leopolda is the sadistic nun who tortures Marie, she seems to actually think she is doing Marie some good with her nasty behaviour by driving the devil from Marie's mind/body. One day, she decides to pour boiling water over Marie to chase the Devil out, declaring, "I will boil him from your mind if you make a peep… by filling you your ear" She puts Marie to sleep behind the stove. She stabs her through the hand with the fork, then takes the poker up alongside her head, and knocks her out. As a result of the painful torture she gets high on adrenaline. At first she experiences strength and feels mentally stronger and empowered. Marie feels that she rises above Sister Leopolda and is her master. In her mind she becomes a saint and tells the nun to kneel before her. As the numbness of the adrenaline fades away , the pain leads her into temporary insanity. They are both ambitious.
  • Speak on the motifs or symbols that you have noticed in ‘Saint Marie’.
    Motif: religion, devil, sadism
    Symbols: stove, stigma
  • Offer an interpretation of the ending of the chapter. What light does such a finale cast on the story title? The young girl also feels a deep pity and knows that she must leave the convent. Marie became a saint?
    ‘Wild Geese’
  • How are Eli and Nector contrasted at the beginning of ‘Wild Geese’? Eli has a second sense and an aim Nector can’t match , he is shy and doesn’t like to talk . Nector is the one who always walks into town and sells what they shoot. He is good- looking boy, tall and slim , without a belly hanging in the way.
  • Try to explain the encounter between Marie and Nector from the point of view of the former . Characterise the girl’s behaviour in this situation. Comment on her wish: ‘I hope they saw it’ (66). Marie is just passing by when Nector caught her, it’s funny for her that he thinks that she stole pillowcase. She feels pain when he is twisting her arm, so tears appear. She is trying to get away from him but when she feels she can’t do it she stays and even doesn’t mind him touching her.
  • What is Nector’s attitude to the incident? Interpret the phrase: ‘I don’t want her, but I want her, and I cannot let go’ (67). He is not ashamed, he takes her hand. He feels that he doesn’t want to be with her but he actually likes her and can’t let her go.
    ‘The Island’
  • Is it of any significance that ‘The Island’ is the only undated story in the book? Can we still guess its time of action? Maybe it is undated to not show when her child was born.
Yes, we can guess, since Lulu is the girl which Nector likes at the time she meets Marie, in this chapter we can see that Nector marries Marie, so it should be almost immediately after previous chapter.
  • Introduce Lulu Nanapush. What are the most striking traits of her character ? How does the absence of her mother influence the girl?
She never grew from the curve of her mother’s arms. She wants to anchor herself against her. Lulu wants to fill her tracks, but luck runs out the holes . Her wishes are worn soles. She stumbles of these shoes of desire. Stubborn, Lulu definitely knows what she wants and seems like a pretty deliberate person. She runs away from the government school, she is searching for love.
  • Explain the essence of the relationship between Lulu and Nanapush.
Old uncle Nanapush writes the letters that bring Lulu home. He is a pattern for all other men. He cares about her. They talk, laught, he teaches her smh.
  • Expand on Moses Pillager. What makes him such an enigmatic figure? Lulu's first lover, with whom she had a child. Moses survived an epidemic during his childhood but became a recluse and moved to an island overrun with cats. Enigmatic – he has to live invisible for some time, he lives alone on an island, speaks only Indian, handsome , nobody knows his real name.
  • Why does Lulu decide to see Moses? How does she behave on the island? Trace the way she changes during her stay there.
She wants to disturb old Rushes Bear. She wants to have an affair with him. She stays in a cave, sleeps with him. She becomes avid, falling hungry upon the defenceless body.
  • Account for the use of Chippewa words in this story. To exaggerate the meaning of words. To show that Moses is the one who preserve the language.
  • Do you detect any influence of feminist and postcolonial theories in the chapters under discussion? Support your stance with examples from the novel .
    Maybe. About Indians.
  • Think of an interesting question that you would like to ask about any of the three stories.
What is the religion role in Marie chapter?
