Literary analyses of Beowulf

epics. The characters are either the embodiment of utmost goodness or the complete contrary. Beowulf is described as a wise, hardy, noble hero who is fighting universal evil, whereas Grendel is a hideous, horrific, grim, fierce and merciless fiend who possesses no good qualities. With the description of Grendel the author actually describes Beowulf as well as he is always the absolute contrary to Grendel. We know that this is an Anglo-Saxon text because it has all the characteristic features of Anglo-Saxon literature. For example the metrical system is alliteration and it is used in abundance e.g. "Many at morning, as men have told me", "Folk-leaders faring from far and near", "By that bloody battle the boon had come" etc. Another characteristic is that there is no rhyme, but rhythm. This was very important in the Anglo-Saxon period as in the contemporary time the epic was performed by court singers. "Beowulf" was written with four beats to each line. The

amphibians (toads), birds (great horned owl, golden eagle and the bald eagle), and reptiles (lizards and snakes). Widely distributed animals in cold deserts are jack rabbits, kangaroo rats, kangaroo mice, pocket mice, grasshopper mice, and antelope ground squirrels. The burrowing habit also applies to carnivores like the badger, kit fox, and coyote. Several lizards do some burrowing and moving of soil. Deer are found only in the winter. Something characteristic Desert biome is the driest of all the biomes. In fact, the most important characteristic of a desert is that it receives very little rainfall. Most deserts receive less than 300 mm a year. The temperature in the desert can change drastically from day to night because the air is so dry that heat escapes rapidly at night. The temperature also varies greatly depending on the location of the desert. Saudi-Arabia peninsula Climate

The buffer zone, increased from 370 ha to 2253 ha, also in 2008, now protects the immediate setting of the inscribed property in a much more complete fashion. Extended to the sea to include views from Viimsi and Kopli peninsulas, the buffer zone now includes 9 view sectors and 5 view corridors. To date, Tallinn has maintained its characteristic skyline visible from both the sea and the land. The characteristic skyline however could be vulnerable because of planned high rise development outside the buffer zone. Authenticity The site preserves to a remarkable extent the medieval urban structure of building plots, streets and squares, set out in the 13th century, as well as medieval urban fabric. The climate in Estonia

It is not completely dark at night from the beginning of May until the end of July. Estonia, on the coast of the Baltic Sea, is at the same latitude in Europe as central Sweden and the northern tip of Scotland. In North America, the middle latitude of Estonia passes through the Labrador peninsula and southern coast of Alaska. However, due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream, the weather in Estonia is considerably milder than the continental climate characteristic of the same latitude. The temperature in the summer months (June September) is typically 15ºC...18ºC and in winter 4ºC...5ºC. Estonian weather offers many surprises. Temperatures may fluctuate by 20ºC. In the early morning the thermometer might read 12ºC and by afternoon it may already be 10ºC. Although it doestn't always snow in winter, there tends to be about 10cm of snow on the ground consistently from late December through to the beginning of March

The California Floristic Province The California Floristic Province is a zone of Mediterranean-type climate and has the high levels of plant endemism characteristic of these regions. The hotspot is home to the giant sequoia, the planet's largest living organism and its taller but less massive relative, the coastal redwood. This region also holds a number of threatened endemic species such as the giant kangaroo rat and the desert slender salamander, and some of the last individuals of the Critically Endangered California condor can still be found here. In fact, it is the largest avian breeding ground in the United States.

Symbols of Estonia

In 1925, what is called the three lion coat-of-arms finally became the national coat-of-arms. National flower The campaign to choose a national flower for Estonia was organized by The Estonian Wildlife Protection Society in 1967-1968 where the ornamental Blue Cornflower was the favourite because of its popularity and decorative appearance, because of this Blue Cornflower was selected as the National Flower of Estonia. National bird The barn swallow, the national bird, is a characteristic guest of Estonian homes. Its call can be heard from practically every eave or barn rafter in the country. If the bird finds a suitable opening, under the ridge of a roof or a broken window, it will build its cup-shaped nest; it will even build it inside a house. The choice of the barn swallow as a national bird was mainly the result of a campaign conducted by ornithologists at the beginning of the sixties. The Barn Swallow has been the national bird of Estonia since 23 June 1960.

The Internet - a blessing or a curse?

The purpose of the Internet has drastically changed over the years. Originally, just a massive global encyclopaedia, the possibilities of the Internet now have become endless. It has also become a social network, connecting you to people from every corner of the world, instantly. It has replaced live, face-to-face communication with other people. Instead of going out and meeting a friend for coffee, people prefer to sit In front of a computer screen, typing. The internet has another very bad characteristic feature: it is highly addictive. It takes valuable hours from your working day without you even noticing. Because the Internet is limitless, it has no boundaries, much like the universe, people always discover new things, new websites, new information and that curiosity is what keeps them constantly online. Not only does the Internet reduce our face to face communication, it also has a dramatic effect on our intelligence

Consultants’ reports regarding structural considerations and tree evaluation are included for their continued application to the problem. An effort has been made to work with the full extent of space requirements currently voiced by the Western Division Management Center and the Bella Coola Village Organization. Other organizations were queried to form the basis of judgment in determining the overall need. This recognizes that as the program development progresses, tenant requirements may change, but the essential square footage and cubic limitations for a below grade structure will remain. In addition, it has been envisioned that jointly required facilities would be available for all organizations to use on a shared basis, utilizing mova...

How far can we go being tolerant?

How far can we go being tolerant? One of our most valuable and rare qualities is tolerance. It is the ability to see things from the other side, capability to take our companions as equal and bravery to show out all those things. Just like all valuable things are uncommon, tolerance is rare too. It is caused by the fact that comparing to the previous centuries people have changed more self-centered and envious, forgetting others around. Tolerance as a characteristic feature is an acknowledged ideal in today`s modern society. The democratic state is based on tolerance. Over the last few years the attitude against ethnic monorities has been a frequently discussed topic in Estonia. Russians, who settled in Estonia during the USSR occupation are causing economical, racial and religious conflicts between them and Estonians. Although Estonians don't have any particular reason why we don't accept Russians as equals, we are used to just unaccept them.

Understandability is possessed by a software product if the purpose of the product is clear. This goes further than just a statement of purpose - all of the design and user documentation must be clearly written so that it is easily understandable. This is obviously subjective in that the user context must be taken into account, i.e. if the software product is to be used by software engineers it is not required to be understandable to the layman. A software product possesses the characteristic completeness to the extent that all of its parts are present and each of its parts are fully developed. This means that if the code calls a sub-routine from an external library, the software package must provide reference to that library and all required parameters must be passed. All required input data must be available. A software product possesses the characteristic conciseness to the extent that no excessive information is present.

Mediterranean Basin

The region boasts mountains as high as 4,500 meters, peninsulas, and one of the largest archipelagos in the world. The climate of the Mediterranean Basin is dominated by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers, and rainfall ranges from as little as 100 millimeters to as much as 3,000 millimeters. Although much of the hotspot was once covered in evergreen oak forests, deciduous and conifer forests, eight thousand years of human settlement and habitat modification have distinctly altered the characteristic vegetation. Today, the most widespread vegetation type is hard-leafed or sclerophyllus shrublands called maquis or matorral, which include representatives from the plant genera Juniperus, Myrtus, Olea, Phillyrea, Pistacia, and Quercus. This vegetation is similar in appearance to the chaparral vegetation of California and the matorral of Chile. Some important components of Mediterranean vegetation (species of the genera Arbutus,

Marit Moorits 12b Kristjan Raud Kristjan Raud (18651943) belongs to the older generation of Estonian artistic pathfinders. Together with his twin brother Paul Raud and his contemporary artist, Ants Laikmaa, he managed to break through the obstacles set before the Estonians by the prevailing peasant mentality and the extremely classconscious society of the time. Kristjan Raud was one of the first Estonian artists who is brave enough to try and make his career in his homeland, although his talent and connections in the art world, established already during his studies in Germany and St.Petersburg would have enabled him to easily merge in either place. The long years of study in St.Petersburg, Dusseldorf and Munich ended in 1903 when Kristjan Raud settled at home. A great ...

Puritanism in John Winthrop "A model of Christian Charity"

spirits for the God, they needed to prevent future settlers of Massachusetts to be as same gracious, charitable and religious as them. One thing worth mentioning is the notice that Winthrop doesn’t talk about private institutions at all. This is something very similar to other Puritans – they negated this concept because of Stuart corruption. Charity had to be maintained amongst people not institutes. A lot of plain style characteristic to the Puritan theme can be brought out from his sermon. Many principles and virtues are expressed with ordinary words which together combine a thoughtful notion. One of the many examples sounds like this:”in all times some must be rich, some poor, some high and eminent in power and dignity, others mean and in subjection.” (Winthrop, 1996) Nothing is exaggerated and the common reader can understand the simplicity clearly. All this plain style together has the effect of elegant style

Navajo Artwork

for ceremonial purposes. Each part of the basket has a very distinct meaning. Like Navajo textiles, only women generally make baskets. Some Navajo baskets have specific symbols and colors, such as a red design to represent darkness and clouds, and a black triangular layer to represent all of the Holy People. The four Sacred Mountains are represented by a black triangle. Different tribes use different materials, weaving techniques, basket shapes, and characteristic patterns. Sandpainting Traditional sandpainting, considered a sacred art, is important aspect of Navajo art and culture. Sandpainting consists of images and patterns created with colored sand. These usually depict the deities of the Navajo but also plant and animal symbols. There are two very distinct and very different forms of Navajo Sand Paintings. First is the traditional "sacred" sand paintings, performed by a Medicine Man, as part of a healing ceremony.

The Great Guild/Suurgild

Guild only accepted merchants, who had a house, wife and who was local. Great Guild activity ended in 1920, when Estonia abolished guilds. The Great Guild Hall The Great Guild Hall is one of the most outstanding buildings of medieval Tallinn. In 1406, it was purchased Burgomaster Gosschalk Schotelmund's house on Pikk street. In 1410, the construction was completed. Same year the Great Guild moved into the building. The facade was designed in a style characteristic of gothic Tallinn. The 16th century witnessed the addition of a gable tower with wind vane, as well as a light latern above the main portal. In 1551, the excise chamber was built at the end of Börsi passage facing Pikk street. The Great Guild Hall The wind vane and coat of arms In the 19th century, the Guild Hall's windows were remodelled in the neo-gothic style and the interior of the building was renovated. It was decorated with prominent neo-gothic doors.

Estonia's nature

Estonia is a small country in Northern Europe with an area of about 45 000 sq km. The country's climate is determined by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The summer temperatures are a little lower than the average of that latitude, but the winters are considerably warmer. As a part of the East-European Plain, the country has a rather flat surface. The highest and most topographically variagated region in Estonia is in the south-eastern part of the country. The Sakala Upland plains offer contrast to the hills of Ottepää, Karula and Haanja. At 318 metres, Suur Munamägi ('Great Egg Hill') is not only the highest point in Estonia, but of all the Baltic countries. The country has 3974 km of coastline, while the land border, in comparison, is only a mere 633 km. The coast varies from limestone cliff in the north to sandy beaches in the west. Most of Estonia's many islands belong to the West Estonian archipelago. The largest islands are Sa...

it, and is found in the temperate zone (as many mosses, liverworts, lichens and algae) and in the tropics (as many ferns, cacti, orchids, and bromeliads). Lianas A liana is any of various long-stemmed, woody vines that are rooted in the soil at ground level and use trees, as well as other means of vertical support, to climb up to the canopy to get access to well-lit areas of the forest. Lianas are especially characteristic of tropical moist deciduous forests and rainforests. Fig trees Ficus is a genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes, and hemiepiphyte in the family Moraceae. Collectively known as fig trees or figs, they are native throughout the tropics with a few species extending into the semi-warm temperate zone. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/programmes/tv/jungle/vjungle.shtml 1.3. Estonia traditional costumes

Estonia traditional costumes In Estonia traditional costume denotes mainly the festive peasant dress of the 19th century, which in its time referred besides social status also to national background, as the ruling class were mainly German at the time. The former peasant costume of regional variation has become today a national symbol and has turned due to its altered function into a national dress. Estonian country folk produced their clothing mainly from home-spun woollen or linen fabric: shirts and married women's head-wear was mostly made from linen, while various outer garments, gloves, stockings and socks, were made from wool. The majority of the clothes remained undyed for a long time: linen garments were bleached white, while woollen outer garments were mainly sheep-brown or black. The wool for making skirts was dyed with herbal dyes. The bedstraw root was particularly widely used to produce red colouring...

Tallinn town hall

built much more spacious. The Town Hall acquired the architectural appearance it has today. Rough copies of the city's calculations of the building work survive in the archives and so it is possible to closely follow the progress of construction. Even the amount of building materials has been recorded. In the 17th century the Town Hall acquired a new, Late Renaissance spire. In 165052 the main entrance was moved to the middle of the building, characteristic of the baroque age, and the main portal was closed. The arcade that earlier enhanced the stateliness and individuality of the Town Hall as well as the windows of the basement and the ground floor were walled up. Partitions were built into the Citizens' Hall, turning its space into several separate rooms. A lot of the medieval architecture of the Town Hall was destroyed or distorted in the course of that reconstruction. In 1667 the interior decor of the Council Chamber was modernised

Report on Exercises 2 - Diodes

-16 -18 -20 U ac, V Figure 5. Volt-amphere characteristics, reverse biased Conclusion Multisim gave us a virtual diode with the idealized symmetrical output characteristic. This means that if the voltage drops across anode-cathode are bigger than the knee voltage, then the current increases rapidly. But if not, then only very small current occurs. In the reverse biased, the voltage across the diode could be large, but only a small current occurs. is obtained as 0,57V from figure 4, which is made by the data we can see from table 1. 2.2 Series clippers VD
