Exami kysimused-vastused

In present day English the word "style" is used in about a dozen of principle meanings: 1. the characteristic manner in which a writer expresses his/her ideas (e.g. style of Byron) 2. the manner of expressing ideas, characteristic of a literary movement or period 3. the use of language typical of a literary genre (e.g. the style of a comedy, drama, novel). 4. the selective use of language that depends on spheres / areas of human activity (e.g. style of fiction, scientific prose, newspapers, business correspondence, etc.). STYLISTICS Stylistics is the study of style. The very term "stylistics" came in more common use in English only some 45 years ago. Stylistics is a part of style; it studies principles of selecting and using different linguistic means (grammatical and phonetic) that serve to render shades of meaning. The Stylistics of language studies stylistic devices and expressive shades of linguistic units (words, construction of phrases).

The vision has come full circle and now the dreamer can also hope to participate, as one ordinary tree has done, in that victory. The poem ends in a mood of confidence. Now the dreamer can bear solitude and the loss of friends on earth though he sees the way open to a `heavenly home'. 3. The Gen. Charst. Of OE poetry and prose. The distinction between verse and prose is by no mean always clear in that period of time. Anglo-Saxon verse is the product of a tradition which reached far back into pre-literate times and which was challenged and eventually replaced after the Conquest by a quite different tradition, so to say Eng poetry began with an end. But by contrast, the earliest monuments of English prose represent the true beginning of a tradition of written prose. But indeed the only work of

Lomonosovi lapsepõlv - Childhood of Lomonosov

Russian 2nd year translation. Prose. The Childhood of Mikhail Lomonosov The great Russian scholar Mikhail Vasil'evich Lomonosov was born in the beginning of the eighteenth century in a little village near the White Sea. His father was a fisherman and he often took his son with him when he went fishing. When Lomonosov was a little boy he wanted to study. This was difficult because books were rare and expensive and because there was no school in the village. However, the village priest taught Lomonosov to read and write. After that, Mikhail Lomonosov began to look for books. One man in the village had an arithmetic book. When Lomonosov saw this book, he ased the man to give it to him. He read it so often that soon he knew it by heart. He managed to get more books from his friends and spent many days reading them. Lomonosov was already nineteen years old when he decided to go to school. Though he already knew much, he needed the help of e...

1964. He outlived the doctors' prognosis by 33 years but continued his prolific pace. Burgess wrote over fifty books, numerous critical studies (notably of Shakespeare and James Joyce) and journal articles, and screenplays and teleplays (he was even called upon to devise a prehistoric language for the film "Quest for Fire"). But his preferred field was classical music, and he wrote several accomplished symphonies (Burgess also integrated music with his prose writing). He held distinguished academic posts and lived in places as far-flung as Malta throughout the 1970s, and he maintained a steady literary output until his death from lung cancer in London on Nov. 26, 1993.

The Medieval period

The Medieval period The Middle Ages began in 1066, when the Normans defeated Anglo-saxons at the Battle of Hastings. Now England had a Norman king William the Conquer. Norman kings ruled in England less than 100 years, during that time Normans brought England closer to the mainstream of European society. William introduced the feudalism. Under it, land was divided among noble overlords, or barons. Knights pledged their wealth and services to the overlords. In return overlords let them use their land. At the lowest end of the social scale were the serfs, peasants bound to the land. In 1154 the Norman time was at the end. In 1154 Henry II started to reign. Henry II was the king who increased royal power at the expense of nobles. His desire to control the Roman Catholic Church in England led to the murder of T. Becket. Richard I has become a model of a true knight. John(Richards brother) gained a weak, even villainous ruler. 1215 he signe...

literature of several independent nations once a part of what was historically Rus', the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. The roots of Russian literature can be traced to the Middle Ages, when epics and chronicles in Old Russian were composed. By the Age of Enlightenment, literature had grown in importance, and from the early 1830s, Russian literature underwent an astounding golden age in poetry, prose and drama. Romanticism permitted a flowering of poetic talent: Vasily Zhukovsky and later his protégé Alexander Pushkin came to the fore. Prose was flourishing as well. The first great Russian novelist was Nikolai Gogol. Then came Ivan Turgenev, who mastered both short stories and novels. Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky soon became internationally renowned. In the second half of the century Anton Chekhov excelled in short stories and became a leading dramatist. The beginning of the 20th

The traditional epics were shaped by a literary artist from historical and legendary materials which had developed in the oral traditions of his nation during a period of expansion and warfare" An epic is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nation. Nonetheless, epics have been written down at least since the works of Virgil, Dante Alighieri, and John Milton. Many probably would not have survived if not written down. The first epics are known as primary, or original, epics. One such epic is the Old English story Beowulf. Epic Conventions, or characteristics common to both type...

Women writer's influence on our society

She was really scandalous because she published her diaries. In her diaries she wrote about really personal things that most people would never let anyone else read if it were their life. She is also important because she wrote a lot about Hiiumaa. In a matter of fact she also lived on our island, Hiiumaa. One of her stories that talks about Hiiumaa is Hundimõrsija (The Wolf's bride). It's a werewolf story about 17th century Hiiumaa. The story is rich with archaic, romantic, colourful prose. She was also given an Estonian Red Cross Merit Medal. She was always considered as a smart woman. She also wrote Lydia Koidula's biography. Thanks to her we know a lot about Hiiumaa's history and nature. Next writer is called Marie Under who lived in 1883-1980. At the beginning she wrote poetry in German because she went to a German school, but when she became older she started writing in Estonian. She started writing when she was only 13 years old and she was also at a very young age

I do not hate ''Twilight'', nor do I disrespect the people who really like the book , I've just grown tired of the hype and cult surrounding the series, and therefore might get somewhat passionate about my list of reasons why ''Twilight'' shouldn't be considered ''th3 bEST book eva written!!!!11'', therefore I admit that, to me, the novel is a victim of bad publicity.
