The townspeople formed a modest 5 per cent of the whole population. By 1782, their number had grown to 23 000. The biggest town was Tallinn with a population of 10 700; in Tartu the number was 3400. And there were some smaller towns like Rakvere and Paide, mercilessly plundered in the Northern War. Townspeople had to fight hard with the neighbouring landlords who considered them as. The population kept growing very slowly: in 1862 the number of townspeople was 64 000, which formed only 8.7 per cent of the population living on Estonian territory. The Estonian population in 1782 was divided according to social class as follows: nobility 0.6%; the clergy, townspeople, and other free people (excluding the Swedish "free peasants" of the coast and islands, resident since the 13th century); peasants, of who'm most were serfs....

Oliver twist - kokkuvõte

Sikes realizes that Oliver has been shot in the arm, and carries him away exclaiming at the loss of blood. Oliver passes out. Chapter 23: Mr. Bumble stopped by to see Mrs. Corney, the matron of the workhouse where Oliver Twist was born. He brought her a bottle of wine, and accepted a cup of tea from her. As they were sitting around the round table, Mr. Bumble kept scooting his chair closer to the old woman. Finally, he grabbed and kissed her. Then came a knock at the door, and the beadle pretended to be doing something away from the matron, while the visitor entered. An old woman from the workhouse came in to tell Mrs. Corney that another woman was dying and was requesting her presence. Mrs. Corney left with the woman, and the beadle waited by looking at her silverware and china. Chapter 24: The matron went down to the room of the sick old woman...

Fridrick douglass

3 Sixteen-year-old Frederick was indeed nearly broken psychologically by his ordeal under Covey, but finally rebelled against the beatings and fought back. Covey lost out on a confrontation with Frederick and never tried to beat him again. This incident was kept under wraps possibly because Covey was afraid the news of Frederick's victory would ruin his reputation as a "slave breaker" or he was simply ashamed of his defeat. In 1837, Douglass met Anna Murray, a free African-American, in Baltimore while he was still held in slavery. They were married soon after he obtained his freedom; Douglass escaped slavery on September 3, 1838, boarding a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland...

STYLE The term "style" is polysemantic (has many meanings): a Latin word "stilus" originally meant a writing instrument used by ancient people. Already in classical Latin the meaning was extended to denote the manner of expressing one's ideas in written or oral form. Jonathan Swift defined style as "proper words in proper places". In present day English the word "style" is used in about a dozen of principle meanings: 1. the characteristic manner in which a writer expresses his/her ideas (e.g. style of Byron) 2. the manner of expressing ideas, characteristic of a literary movement or period 3. the use of language typical of a literary genre (e.g. the style of a comedy, drama, novel). 4. the selective use of language that depends on spheres / areas of human activity (e.g. style of fiction, scientific prose, newspapers, business correspondence, etc.). STYLISTICS Stylistics is the study of s...

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Lord Henry Wotton wants to buy the picture, and moreover, he wants to meet the boy in the picture himself. Unfortunately, Dorian is an innocent and a pure child, this is why Hallward doesn't find the idea of these two men meeting, because he is afraid that Dorian won't find his relationship with Basil intesting and exciting anymore. Basil fell in love with Dorian while painting his picture. Basil also treated him good, kept his self- esteem and spirit up by saying all the great things about him, of how good he looks and how much he as an artist likes him, etc. Everything that Dorian did later in his life selling his soul to the Devil in order to remain picturesquely and breath-takingly beautiful (Dorian wanted the picture to get older in time, not he himself.) was in my opinion actually a favour from Basil Hallward, because he was the one who told all those nice things to him...

today there is a memorial plaque on the church wall commemorating the event. The Flag Museum attracts tourists who take an interest in the history of the flag. After about half a century, during which it was prohibited by the Soviet authorities, the flag was sen again in public for the first time in Tartu. Many elderly people were carrying the flags they had kept in secret hiding places durin the Soviet years; tears were rolling down their cheeks. On 24 February 1989, Estonia, still part of the Soviet Union, hoisted its tricolour on the tower of Pikk Hermann in Tallinn. Since then the flag has always been hoisted with ceremony on that day, which is the national holiday the anniversary of the Republic. According to Estonian tradition the national flag is hoisted at sunrise...

Houses of parliament

The seating arrangement in the house is reminiscent of choir stalls, the members of the cabinet sit on the front benches while opposition senior members sit directly opposite. The distance between the benches marked out on the floor in red lines, is exactly two sword lengths and one foot apart. Members are not allowed to cross these lines, thus ensuring that debates are kept orderly. In the centre of the floor stands the Table of the House, on which the mace is placed at the start of each parliamentary sitting; this is the Speaker's sceptre. The speaker of the house presides over sittings, keeping order. The House of Lords decorated in scarlet and gold has all the grandeur one would expect in this chamber. This is where Her Majesty the Queen comes to open Parliament each November. Placed beneath a regal canopy, the gold throne which...

The Parliament is the legislature of the United Kingdom; housed in the Palace of Westminster. The parliament is made up of the Queen and two houses: House of Commons, which is elected and House of Lords, which is appointed. Queen Victoria Victoria became the queen in 1837 when she was only 18 years old. She was queen for 64 years, the longest reign of any monarch. We know a lot about her because she kept a diary from the age of thirteen until her death. She reigned through a time of great change in Britain. 5 While she was the queen, Britain changed completely. Near the beginning of her reign the population was about 18 million people but by 1901 it was 30 million. By the end of her reign Britain had huge industrial cities, linked by railways. Telephone and telegraph communications improved....

As well on the region of the low San Rafael, the French is predominant, due to the settle of the remaining Maximilian of Hapsburg troops that were allowed to stay, after they were defeated, on the fall of the second empire in the XIX century. Also needs to be mentioned: Catalan, Basque, Gaelic, and more Spaniard dialects that were brought and kept by their descendants. Although some people know essentials of English, mainly in commerces or touristic zones of big cities, locals never use it to communicate. It consists of a ditch and rampart constructed with the ditch on the Welsh-facing side, and appears to have been carefully aligned to present an open view into Wales from along its length. As originally constructed, it must have been about 27 metres wide and 8 metres from the ditch bottom to the bank top. *Redwald and Sutton Hoo Redwald was a rich, influential pagan warrior. He kept both a Christian and a pagan altar in his temple. It seems that he had a last lapse into paganism before his death, for he was burried in the great Sutton Hoo ship burial. The burial site in Sutton Hoo was discovered near his royal court in Suffolk. Only the impression of the wooden vessel remained, but the treasure buried with the king contains a splendid amount of imported silver, jewellery and coins from France....

During the thyristor opening process, the anode current will be distributed through the full crystal surface. The current distribution is not homogeneous. The turn-on process includes three time intervals:the turn on delay t0, the current rise time t1 and the current spreading timet2.The turn-off process is similar to the diode. For that, the anode current must be kept well below the hold current. The decreasing rate of the current depends on the circuit inductance. The density of excess carriers will diminish by the recombination. 7)Diac is a bi-directional diode that can be triggered into conduction by reaching a specific voltage value. The diac can pass current in either direction. This is the current-voltage characteristic.A diac has neither an anode, nor a cathode. Its terminals are marked as MT1(main terminal1) and MT2(main terminal2)....

The seven dials mystery

When she comes to, Bundle learns that Jimmy and been arrested, in the murders of her two friends and he steged the fight and shot himself in the arm. The Seven Dials group was after him and now they had him so they wanted Bundle to take the place of one of the Seven Dials members that tied. Bill was so happy that she was alive that he proposed to her. I really liked this book for its suspenseful quality and its unexpected outcome. The book kept me wondering what will happen and the ending shocked me. Bundle was an interesting character in the book because she was a determined, independant girl which was unusual in the late 1920's. The characters and the setting work together to make an enticing story that ends with a cheerful outlook on life. The story started out with bleak murders but ended with a wonderful proposal....

Topic - Libraries

Findings from the citystates of Sumer have revealsed temple rooms full of clay tablets. Those archives were made up almost completely of the records of commercial transactions or inventories with only a few documents touching historical records or legends. Things were pretty same in temple records on papyrus in Ancient Egypt. The earliest discovered private archives were kept at Ugarit (which is located in today's Syria). Besides inventories, texts of myths may have been standardized for teaching new scribes. Private or personal libraries made up of nonfiction and fiction books first appeared in Greece. The first ones appeared some time near the 5th Century BC. Libraries were filled with parchment and papyrus scrolls. There were a few institutional or royal libraries like the Library of Alexandria which were open to an...
