It is generally believed that the Moravian movement countered the tendencies towards Germanisation and prepared the ground for the growth of the Estonian national movement in the second half of the 19th century. It should be kept in mind, however, that the Moravian movement never involved more than a fraction of the Estonian peasantry, and its regional penetration varied greatly. The latter took issue with the unregulated legislation between the Moravian congregation and the church. After the initial widespread awakening movement, manifesting several religious and social- revolutionary extremes (e.g. ecstatic sermons at meetings in Saaremaa and Võrumaa, in southeast Estonia, demanding Christian equality between peasants and landlords), from 1743 the Moravian congregation was officially forbidden for a long time. Enlightenment and enlightened absolutism...

The first one says that in 1869 a nameless country folk sang themselves to a European nation and the other, the latter , confirms that Estonians sang themselves their independence. The I, II, IV and V Song Festivals took place in Tartu, the rest in Tallinn. STYLE The term "style" is polysemantic (has many meanings): a Latin word "stilus" originally meant a writing instrument used by ancient people. Already in classical Latin the meaning was extended to denote the manner of expressing one's ideas in written or oral form. Jonathan Swift defined style as "proper words in proper places". In present day English the word "style" is used in about a dozen of principle meanings: 1. the characteristic manner in which a writer expresses his/her ideas (e.g. style of Byron) 2. the manner of expressing ideas, characteristic of a literary movement or period 3. the use of language typical of a literary genre (e.g. the style of a comedy, drama, novel). 4. the selective use of language that depends on spheres / areas of human activity (e.g. style of fiction, scientific prose, newspapers, business correspondence, etc.). STYLISTICS Stylistics is the study of s...

Scotland

Vigorous Atlantic depressions-- also known as European windstorms--are a common feature in the autumn and winter in Scotland. Flora of Scotland ! The flora of Scotland is an assemblage of native plant species including over 1,600 vascular plants, more than 1,500 lichens and nearly 1,000 bryophytes. The total number of vascular species is low by world standard but lichens and bryophytes are abundant and the latter form a population of global importance. Various populations of rare fern exist, although the impact of 19th century collectors threatened the existence of several species. The flora is generally typical of the north west European part of the Palearctic ecozone and prominent features of the Scottish flora include boreal Caledonian forest (much reduced from its natural extent), heather moorland and coastal machair...

Scotland

Ex-Labour-leader John Smith described the revival of a Scottish parliament as the "settled will of the Scottish people". The constitutional status of Scotland is nonetheless subject to ongoing debate. In 2007, the Scottish Government established a "National Conversation" on constitutional issues, proposing a number of options such as increasing the powers of the Scottish Parliament, federalism, or a referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom. In rejecting the latter option, the three main opposition parties in the Scottish Parliament have proposed a separate Scottish. Constitutional Commission to investigate the distribution of powers between devolved Scottish and UK-wide bodies. Kokkuvõte Sotimaa asub Euroopa loode osas ,mis on kolmandik Suur-Britanniast . It is known that they established separate kingdoms: the Saxons settled in the South and West, the Angles in the East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria and the Jutes in Kent. They probably thought of themselves as separate peoples, but they shared a common language and similar customs. *The 7 Anglo-Saxon kingdoms The first of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, which was popularly known as the Heptarchy (or the Seven Kingdoms), was founded in the latter half of the 5th century. Englan was divided into seven ancient kingdoms: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Wessex. The period supposedly lasted until the kingdoms began to consolidate into larger units, but the actual events marking this transition are debatable. *St Patric and the Christianization of Ireland was a Christian missionary and is the patron saint of Ireland. Legend says that Patrick tought the Irish about the concept of the...

Bridges presentation

The bridge was reconstructed using original stones recovered from the river following demolition during World War II. By the mid-18th century, masonry bridge building had reached its apogee. French engineer Jean- Rodolphe Perronet designed and built the Pont de Neuilly (1774), the Pont de Saint-Maxence (1785), and the Pont de la Concorde (1791), the latter completed when Perronet was eighty-three. Perronet's design goals were to slim down the piers and to stretch arches to the maximum. The Pont de la Concorde still represents the perfection of masonry arch construction, even though sceptical officials forced Perronet to shorten the unprecedented centre span of the bridge to 92ft (28m). Long, elegant, elliptical arches, piers half their former widths, special machinery for construction, and the...

The Queens of England

Mary is characterized as "Bloody Mary" because of the large number of religious persecutions that took place during her reign; almost 300 people were condemned to death as a result of trials for heresy. These actions, however, must be put into perspective, as by European standards this was a limited persecution. It is possible too that Protestant writers such as John Foxe, particularly in his Acts and Monuments of These Latter and Perilous Dayes ..., popularly known as The Book of Martyrs, exaggerated the ferocity of the Catholic reaction. Some of Henry VIII's and Edward VI's most important Protestant bishops were burnt, including Thomas Cranmer, John Hooper, Hugh Latimer, and Nicholas Ridley. Mary has been blamed for these persecutions along with her advisers: Reginald Pole, Bishop Stephen Gardiner (who had presided over the wedding of Mary and Philip), and Bishop Edmund Bonner....

Advantages and disadvantages of television

It is said that only three generations have grown up with television, but they managed to forget how to spend their free time without television. Its role is increasing not because it is an entertainer or informant, but because of the grip it has on many people. It is called a "living room monster" or "one-eyed monster." It is established that the biggest viewers are pensioners and housewives. The latter watch TV while their husbands are at work. In total they spend five hours daily sitting before the "boxes." Children watch commercials, horror films or films of violence. TV prevents children from creating their abilities. They get accustomed to TV to such an extent that they watch it all the time. To force their children away from their favourite evening programmes to their homework has eventually become the main problem of the parents of different countries....

Indians

Europeans, in sum, were regarded as something mechanical - soulless creatures who wielded diabolically ingenious tools and weapons to accomplish mad ends. The Europeans brought with them not only a desire and will to conquer the new continent for all its material richness, but they also brought with them diseases that hit the Indians hard. Conflicts developed between the Native Americans and the Invaders, the latter arriving in overwhelming numbers, as many "as the stars in heaven". The Europeans were accustomed to own land and laid claim to it while they considered the Indians to be nomads with no interest to claim land ownership. The conflicts led to the Indian Wars, the Indian Removal Act empowered by President Andrew Jackson in 1830 and other acts instituted by the Europeans in order to accomplish their objectives, as they viewed them at the time...

Early in 1340 the relationship with Russians deteriorated again. Provincial master Burchard von Dreileben planned a campaign against Pskov and demanded the help of Tartu bishopric. The provincial master began to build another belt of border fortresses. On the Annunciation Day, March 25, 1342, the building of fortresses in Marienburg and Vastseliina began. The latter was called the fortress of the Virgin Mary, but it soon acquired the name of New (vastse) Town (Castrum Novum, Neuhausen, Nyhusen, Nowogrodek). The name is probably the result of a chronological comparison with the older Kirumpää fortress. The first written records of Kirumpää fortress date from the year 1322. This is one of the possible explanations for the origin of Vastseliina`s name. The fact that the communications of southern Old Livonia with...

Bees

There are nearly 20,000 known species of bee, in nine recognized families, though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source, and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used as food for larvae. Bees have a long proboscis (a complex "tongue") that enables them to obtain the nectar from flowers. They have antennae almost universally made up of 13 segments in males and 12 in females, as is typical for the superfamily. Bees all have two pairs of wings, the hind pair being the smaller of the two; in a very few species, one sex or caste has relatively short wings that...

Introduction tallinnasse

Tallinn is the location of many institutions of higher education and science. As an important port for trade between Russia and Scandinavia, it became a target for the expansion of the Teutonic Knights and the Kingdom of Denmark. Historically, the city has been attacked, sacked, razed and pillaged on numerous occasions. Although extensively bombed by Soviet airforces during the latter stages of World War II, much of the medieval Old Town still retains its charm. Since independence, improving air and sea transport links with Western Europe and Estonia's accession to the European Union have made Tallinn easily accessible to tourists. SIGHTSEEING The main attractions are in the two old towns, Lower Town and Toompea, which are both easily explored on foot. Eastern districts around Pirita and Kadriorg are also worth...
