American Literature Character Sketch-The Color Purple-Shug Avery

Character Sketch-Shug Avery The Color Purple by Alice Walker Shug Avery was a very passionate African-American blues singer, and I believe quite a lot throughout the novel. Her evolvement was interesting to observe. First impression of her wasn’t positive because she appeared rather inelegant and also quite selfish. In essence, she seemed to be unlikable as well as superficial. Shug (originally Lilly) didn’t really embrace herself and adopted a nickname – “Shug”. However she developed a sexual relationship with Celie and with that broke the boundaries of traditional gender roles. She was outspoken, exteremely honest and not easy to affect. All her three children were born out of wedlock. She is a good example of sexuality and gender not being as univocal and simplistic topics as they may seem since she was a bisexual (sexual relationship with Celie). Throughout the novel Celie’s mother was compared to Shug

Jacob suddenly turns serious, taking Bella's chin in his hand. He tells her he's not going to stop fighting until her heart stops beating. Bella remarks that her time as a human is limited, which causes Jacob to become yet even more serious. He declares this is only more motivation for him to fight, "fight harder now, while I can." Jacob kisses her angrily and aggressively, and Bella fights back without success. After realizing that her efforts are useless, she shuts herself down and stands still as a statue, hoping this will finally stop him. And it works. He pulls away, smiles and shuts his eyes, and after answering Bella that he is indeed finished, she punches him in the mouth as hard as possible, injuring her hand in the process. Once he realizes what's happened, Jacob tries to soothe her but she yells at him to get away saying she's leaving at once. Jacob stays calm, offering her a ride home. She refuses and thinks to herself that if she can

On account of her constant questionings she finally evolves into an individual, who is capable of distinguishing essential truths of life from unimportant ones, however she still remains to be uncertain, which may indicate that her discoveries are not all-encompassing in nature and may fade away from the memory. From the very beginning it is evident that Laura is a young lady, who tries to learn how to establish herself. During that process she has to step out of her comfort zone for several times. She is often afraid of looking silly or simply weird. As well as, she constantly questions how she should behave. Therefore, she often imitates her mother or somebody else to be taken seriously. Once she attempted to impose herself among workmen, but failed miserably and lost face. Namely she attempted to mimic her mother`s voice in an unconvincing way by saying "Good morning" to workmen

But she couldn't move. The thought of being anywhere, closer to the attic made her faint. Ella was sitting on the couch and listening to her favourite song, trying not to hear the howling wind and the baying of distant dogs outside. The volume was set almost unbearably loud because she knew that all scary movies started with the main character hearing footsteps or creaking from the attic. She pretended to read a magazine and hum along with the music but she couldn't even deceive herself enough to get her mind off from her loneliness and helplessness. Suddenly, and it all seemed to happen at the same time, the music stopped and the clock struck twelve. As Ella had been dreading the room became silent for a minute. She couldn't force herself to move. All her worst nightmares were becoming real. She started hearing all kinds of voices from the attic. All at once the barking dogs went mad; she heard a crazed laughter coming from the attic and a thump.

Casey Brown has some really good tips that we could use to help us. 4. slaid fear and doubts The main point of Casey's speech is that: No one will ever pay you what you're worth. They'll only ever pay you what they think you're worth, and you control their thinking. Casey Brown told two stories. One story was about herself reevaluating her pricing to her clients. She found that eventhough she was pricing consultant an expert, she had doubts and fears too. She claims that it is natural and normal however they don't define our value, and they shouldn't limit our earning potential. 5. slaid how to know your value She says that when you are valuing yourself you should ask key valuing questions: 1. She Set a Path for a Modern-Day Woman Jordan Baker did not play a primary character in The Great Gatsby and she definitely did not start out as the most likeable one, yet oddly enough, she ended up being my favourite. The reason for that is simple: she portrayed a present-day woman who might have been vain, and at times, careless but she was also fairly independent and knew how to take care of herself in a world where women were thought of as nothing more than merely housewives. I truly respect the qualities she possessed, even though they were not always admirable and considerate of others. The number one trait I liked about Jordan as a character was her independence and the fact that she was not reliant on men, which cannot be said about Daisy and Myrtle. All the female characters were in their twenties but Jordan was the only one who

This comedy has two main characters: the hairdresser Susan, who calls herself Rita and is played by Julie Walters and divorced constantly drunk Dr. Frank Bryant, who is played by Michael Caine. Educating Rita deals with relationships and changes. It also speaks about how different people find different things important. Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl (1916-1990) The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight - hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the sideboard behind her, two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey. Fresh ice cubes in the Thermos bucket. Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come him (correction: home) from work. Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come. There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did. The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil. Her skin - for this was her sixth month with child - had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen, and a few

Her father, Kolë Bojaxhiu was involved in Albanian politics. In 1919, after a political meeting, which left Skopje out of Albania, he fell ill and died when Agnes was about eight years old. After her father's death, her mother raised her as a Roman Catholic. According to a biography by Joan Graff Clucas, in her early years Agnes was fascinated by stories of the lives of missionaries and their service, and by age 12 was convinced that she should commit herself to a religious life.[10] At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. She never again saw her mother or sister. After a few months' training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made

Éclipse chapter 12 - kokkuvõte

Chapter Twelve -Time Walking to the car after school, Alice discloses to Bella that she is planning a graduation party for her and it suddenly dawns on Bella that graduation is only a week away. The deadline agreed for Carlisle to change her into a vampire is almost upon her -- and she realizes in a panic that she isn't ready to leave her human life behind, even though it's what she's wanted more than anything. Without her realizing it, the time for preparing herself has slipped away. Alerted by Bella's stricken silence on the way home, Edward drags an admission out of her that she is isn't really ready, but Bella insists that the combined threat from Victoria, the Volturi, and the recent mysterious intruder in her room makes it too dangerous to postpone her transformation. Edward insists that he won't let her go through with this until she feels safe and can freely decide what she really wants. None of the Cullens had a choice about

" "Depend upon it, my dear, that when there are twenty, I will visit them all." Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three-and-twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Her mind was less difficult to develop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented, she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news. Chapter 2 Mr. Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited on Mr. Bingley. He had always intended to visit him, though to the last always assuring his wife that he should not go; and till the evening after the visit was paid she had no knowledge of it. It was then disclosed in the following manner

Character reference (soovituskiri)

To Whom It May Concern, I am very pleased to write a character reference for (name) I have known (name) since (date). I clearly remember the first time I met her. She was very friendly towards everyone and that really gave me a good impression of her. And even now I think she is a very joyful and lovely person, who cares for others as much as for herself. During these two and a half months I have known (name), she has always been very hard-working and extremely passionate about everything she does. She is strong-willed and if she somehow doesn't succeed in something, she tries again and again until she does. (name) is also very committed to her education and very industrious. Her favourite subjects are math and Estonian. I would certainly recommend (name) for any position where hard-working, passionate and co- operative people are valued.

But on the other hand, she had weakness for the ministry. She tried to spend as much time as she could with them and they were quite pleasurable. Louie had adopted Jeanette when she was little girl. Since she was very conservative and did not want to have her own kids in a natural way, she had adopted Jeanette for her selfish reasons. Daughter was a tool for her to accomplish her religious aims. “My mother called herself a missionary on the home front. She said that the Lord hadn’t called her to the hot places, like Pastor Spratt and his Glory Crusade, but to the streets and by-ways of Lancashire.” Jeanette was taught reading from the Book of Deuteronomy which had affected Jeanette later in life and she had had problems at school. Children did not like Jeanette and tried to stay away from her. Teachers were concerned about her religious tendency and had asked Louie to rein her in

He brought the Cold One's corpse back to the village for the elders to see. The corpse tried to reassemble itself, so they set fire to it and separated the ashes into small bags, one of which Billy still possesses. The Cold One's mate came to the village seeking revenge and killed the last wolf protector, Yaha Uta, as well as many of the tribe. Taha Aki turned into a wolf again in order to fight her, but he was old and she was too strong. The third wife saw his struggle and stabbed herself in front of the Cold Woman to distract her with her blood. The third wife died, but thanks to her sacrifice, Taha Aki was able to destroy the female. Afterwards, Taha Aki stayed with the body of his wife for one day, as a wolf, then and then ran to the forest and never returned. Over time, the warriors only changed into wolves if Cold Ones came to the area. As long as there were only one or two, the pack stayed small.

She had curly blond hair, blue eyes, tiny nose, small bright red mouth, bright white top and small red skirt, curvy body figure just like an angel. For today she is changed a lot. She got long black hair with pink stripes in it and still she got that pretty face, she's wearing high-heel shoes, black tight jeans, and black calash top. In her character is something special what I like. She is friendly most of the time, she got so much energy but she don't have a place to express herself. And the thing what I like most about her that she is very honest with me i think and i can trust her allways and of course she is very helpful.

... Damrong - she was utterly beautiful. She lived alone in a top-notch building. She was a prostitute but not like anyother. She used to be like that, but after meeting Sonchai she wasn't like that. When they went out for dinner she usually insisted on paying for the dinner. I guess it was her way to keep her mind clean. She only had one one spoon, one fork and a pair of chopsticks. She didn't have any photographs of herself. Which of the character do you like best? I think the character I like the best is Sonchai. He has that something that makes you wonder what is he going to do next or does he belive in things that might exist in this world and might not. He is constantly stuggeling with Damrongs' death. Shortly after he first heard of Damrongs' death he buried hes' problems into a vodka bottle. Although Damrong was a prostitute he was having some

Plot Overview Jane Eyre is a young orphan being raised by Mrs. Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt. A servant named Bessie provides Jane with some of the few kindnesses she receives, telling her stories and singing songs to her. One day, as punishment for fighting with her bullying cousin John Reed, Jane’s aunt imprisons Jane in the red- room, the room in which Jane’s Uncle Reed died. While locked in, Jane, believing that she sees her uncle’s ghost, screams and faints. She wakes to find herself in the care of Bessie and the kindly apothecary Mr. Lloyd, who suggests to Mrs. Reed that Jane be sent away to school. To Jane’s delight, Mrs. Reed concurs. Once at the Lowood School, Jane finds that her life is far from idyllic. The school’s headmaster is Mr. Brocklehurst, a cruel, hypocritical, and abusive man. Brocklehurst preaches a doctrine of poverty and privation to his students while using the school’s funds to provide a wealthy and opulent lifestyle for his own family

Why learn English

Why learn English?

Why learn English? Nowadays English plays a major international role. Personally I believe, that in order to survive in present society we have to, at least, know the basic English, because almost everything is based on English. Firstly English is the international language and knowing English shows the eruditeness of people, because every person who considers him or herself to be educated has learnt it. English has switched places with Latin, which once was the language of educated people. Not to mention the fact that people can use it for communication with eachother. In my opinion it is not necessary to learn that country's mother tongue while most of the people are able to talk in English. I find that English connects different people and helps us to feel like a big multicultural family.

Translation. "Stalin's Grandson" Theatre director Alexandr Burdonsky only rarely gives interviews about his family history and about what happened to him after Stalin's death: "I was fifteen years old when the 20 th Congress took place and Khrushchev gave his secret speech about the cult of personality and its consequences and about all the people who had suffered under Stalin. The speech was no revelation for me. Many of my mother's friends had spent time in prison camps. She herself was constantly under threat of arrest. I knew about all this and I had the same attitude as any other normal person to it. But after Khrushchev's speech many people abandoned us. For them we were only Stalin's relatives. Nobody came to visit us. The headmistress of our school began to pick on my sister and me. We had to move to another school. Later, thank goodness, I met somebody who behaved differently towards me. I was studying drama with Oleg Efremov but I wanted to be a director
