THE POOR FARMER'S DAUGHTERS Once upon a time there lived a poor farmer who only had seven children as his treasure. They were all girls, named after every famous queen the country had had. However, none of them was his child they were all orphans, found in the nearby forest many years ago, during the Great War. The eldest one was Margaret; she had long dark shiny hair and big blue eyes. She was a true beauty compared to the other maidens at the village. However, she had a bad side as well the only one she ever cared about was she herself

Famine Carmen Kaljulaid 11 a World Hunger, Poverty & Famine: How They Fit Together 923 million people across the world are hungry. In essence, hunger is the most extreme form of poverty, where individuals or families cannot afford to meet their most basic need for food. Hunger manifests itself in many ways other than starvation and famine. Most poor people who battle hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth, weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness. Countries in which a large portion of the population battles hunger daily are usually poor and often lack the social safety nets we enjoy, such as soup kitchens, food stamps, and job training programs. When a family that lives in a poor country cannot grow enough food or earn enough money to buy
demographic groups who are more likely to experience poverty are also more likely to experience homelessness . Homelessness usually increases during periods of economic recession () and rising unemployment, when people can no longer afford ( ) housing, and governments cut down public housing expenses. Inadequate shelter or housing creates conditions that promote disease. Without decent ( ) protection, many of the poor are exposed ( ) to severe ( ) and dangerous weather as well as to bacteria and viruses carried by other people and animals. They also are more likely to become infected with diseases carried by insects or rodents (). In arid()regions, drought leaves the poor without clean water for drinking or bathing. over the globe. It gives unlimited access for the poorer people all over the Word to get the cheapest source of desired goods and services. Thirdly removing trading barriers help unemployed people to get jobs and deincrease the effect of the nowaday monopolies and explotation of the citizenz by the local businessmen. One point in favour of globalization is that it causes faster economic growth in all countries including the poor countries, lower prices of foods, drugs, clothes and shelter. Greater opportunities for skilled persons both locally and abroad and of course better understanding among the peoples of different countries. In spite of that the current rulers and dominators are not willing to agree with globalization, because they have their own vested interests, especially in socialist, communist and poor countries. Currently they don't have to compete with the efficient and skilled Word.

Charles Dickens (1812 to 1870) is generally considered to be the greatest English novelist. He wrote novels that exposed terrible lives of the poor during the nineteenth century in England. His novels draw attention to the dreadful conditions in which so many of London's poor lived at that time. Those novels reflect Dickens' own childhood. Oliver Twist tells the story of an orphan, who after spending his early life in a workhouse is sent to work for a hard taskmaster. Oliver runs away to London, where he joins a gang and become a pickpocket. By chance a gentelman takes pity on Oliver and takes him into his house. Although Oliver is forced to return for a time to gang , he eventually is reunited with his family and lives happily ever after.

expectancy was just 35 years. Most Tudor people lived in the countryside, but some people lived in towns or big Tudor cities like London, Bristol or Norwich. Tudor England was a farming society. Most of the population (over 90 %) lived in small villages and made their living from farming. Under Tudor rule England became a more peaceful and richer place. Towns grew larger and the mining of coal, tin and lead became very popular. The poor The poor had to work hard and struggled to survive. They worked six days a week and only had holy days and public holidays off work. They ate coarse grey bread made from rye and barley. Soups were made from vegetables and herbs. Meat was a luxury but poor people sometimes kept animals to provide milk, cheese and eggs. Life for the poor in Tudor times was harsh. When the harvest failed it was tempting for poor people to steal food. When people did break the law, they risked public flogging

cheap goods. During the Victorian era, the population grew immensely. At the end of 19th century the population had grown three times bigger in Great Britain! That made wages much lower, because more people were looking for jobs. Many people couldn't afford places to live and had to live on the streets. Slums started appearing in bigger towns. Crime rate was also rising because of this: many homeless children lived by stealing and respectable Victorians started seeing poor people as a threat to society. That is one of the reasons why workhouses were made. Workhouses Workhouses were supposed to solve the problem of poverty, because wealthy people believed that poor people were poor only because they were lazy(actual causes were overpopulation, unemployment and high prices). So in 1834 a law was passed in the Parliament that resulted in building workhouses to accommodate and give jobs to people who couldn't support themselves financially

Thousands of poverty-stricken Irish were dying of starvation, causing the country's population to fall. However, despite the famine and constantly increasing number of deaths, the government did not implement measures to improve the existing situation. Thence, Swift, being an Irishman by birth and feeling disappointed of the ruling classes, proposes a solution to the problem by publishing his shocking work, the bitterest satire A Modest proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public (1729). In A Modest Proposal Swift finds out a solution to stop the famine. The author cites infants' breeding as an example for improving the economical conditions, finding the proposal "a fair, cheap and easy method of making these children sound and useful members of the common-wealth" (52). He says that because many women
What is more the drinks were cheap. Service The staff was friendly and helpful they can make very helpful suggestions about the menu. However, the service is a bit slow at times, especially at the lunch hours. Atmosphere The restaurant has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. You can not help but be in a good mood while you are there, because of the cheerful music. However the music is too loud sometimes, so you cant hear the waitresses. Although the lihgting is a bit poor, so it is difficult to read the menu. Conclusion In conclusion, althouhg the music can be loud and the service might be slow or that the lighting is poor, Marco´s is a perfect place to go and have your lunch, because of the good prices and atmosphere. I certainly recommend everyone to have their luch or dinner at Marco´s.
Politics have led to dire conditions in many poorer nations. In many cases, international political interests have led to a diversion of available resources from domestic needs to western markets. This has resulted in a lack of basic access to food, water, health, education and other important social services. This is a major obstacle to equitable development. Poverty has also been described as the number one health problem for many poor nations as they do not have the resources to meet the growing needs. But poverty is not restricted just to developing countries. Industrialized nations are also seeing a sharp increase in poverty. While the current form of globalization is resulting in additional wealth, the disparities are sharp. Less people are turning out to be benefiting while an increasing number are left behind. Even in places such as Europe and USA, poor people still do not seem to get enough attention

Children are often much more artistic than many adults, especially in high school, teenagers experience an increased need to be unique and special. The clothes are one of the most important things of self-expression, and school uniforms do not allow students to demonstrate their individuality. On the other hand, school uniforms make students feel equal. If students are required to wear school uniforms, people will not recognize who is rich or who is poor. Everybody will give them opportunities equally. Besides, school uniforms help poor students feel more comfortable. There is no difference between students (by clothes) and they can develop their friendship. Finally, school uniforms should make students feel proud of their school. For example, if there is a meeting and they are required to connect with students from many different schools. Wearing uniforms helps student feel more confident because then they would like to

QUESTIONS part 2 1: How many people died in the Great Fire of 1666? The death toll from the fire is unknown and is traditionally thought to have been small, as only a few verified deaths were recorded. This reasoning has recently been challenged on the grounds that the deaths of poor and middle-class people were not recorded anywhere, and that the heat of the fire may have cremated many victims, leaving no recognizable remains. 2: How was the fire finally mastered? The battle to quench the fire is considered to have been won by two factors: the strong east winds died down, and the Tower of London garrison used gunpowder to create effective firebreaks to halt further spread eastward. 3: What did the Rebuilding of London Act 1666 say about bricks?
community, love of others and morals of equality. This sermon also represents the hope of the colony in God after repudiating the Church of England. In his sermon A modell of Christian charity, reliance to the Bible is the key element which reveals in the interpretation of God itself and morals of the Bible. He begins by offering explanation to the inequality of the human kind and why God wants such inequality to exist at all. Simple reciprocity is indicated by collating the rich and the poor as it follows: „soe that the riche and mighty should not eate upp the poore nor the poore and dispised rise upp against and shake off theire yoake” (Winthrop, 1996). These differences give humans the opportunity to manifest the work of the Spirit within them. The poor are recommended be loyal and honest in their worship to their betters and to authorities. The rich and powerful should honestly and loyally share justice and mercy to the poor. Because of that God’s ignition is to
Probably almost every day we catch ourselves on a thought, "I wish I was that rich, I wish I was the man on TV." No matter how hard we try though, we won't. It's nearly impossible to win a lottery and there frankly isn't any other ways of getting rich very quickly. But how many other people would know to tell us about if wealth brings happiness or not? All the other rich people have been rich for their whole lives, they don't have anything to compare. And poor people dreaming can tell even less because they've never had such money and they don't know what it takes to stay wealthy and not fall hard back to being poor. In the end, wealth does help you a lot. It makes your life so much easier so you can concentrate on either getting more money or on your hobbies. On the other hand, it can also make your life more difficult. You never had a security problem before, and also people judge you only by the money you got and not by who you really are

valuable things. They value things, what they have, like home, family, friends etc. They can not miss those expensive things, because they never had these things. I think people with less things and more friends and family love, are happier, because they have the time to spend time with them. People with a lot of things are devoting their time to take care of the things and they completely forget about people they love. For example poor people, they respect other human beings more than rich people. I think it is that way, because poor or homeless people know how it is to be poor and they value people, who are a little bit better than them. Rich ones already know that they are better than anyone. Money is not the most valuable thing on earth. There is saying that says: "Buy Experiences, Not Things". That means, that the most valuable things in life are memories. If you are old, the things you have bought are broken or

TOPIC 8 The greatest poet of Scotland Robert Burns is loved by all Scotsmen as their greatest poet. The future poet was fortunate in his father who was understanding, friendly and fearless man. So it was probably from him that the poet inherited his great love and undrestanding of people. From his mother he, too, learned something that was to be value to him. His mother often sang the old songs and ballads of the countryside. Although William Burns, Robert´s father, was a poor peasant, he was man who valued knowledge. His greatest wish was to give his children the best education in his power. It was from him where Robert received his love of books. When Robert was six he and his brother Gilbert went to school, but only after a few months the teacher left and the school was closed. Their father persuaded two or three neighburs to join him in engaging another teacher. The new teacher was called John Murdoch. Although he was only eighteen, he was a very clever teacher

At the age of 14, she was sent to the Perkins School for the Blind to receive training to be a teacher for children who were blind. 4. Anne had to figure out a way to make Helen understand words and their meaning. She began to teach Helen letters, by signing them into her palm. Then just one month later, everything clicked. Anne held Helen's hand under a pump while signing W-A-T-E-R into her palm. Helen's whole face lit up. The word came to life. That day, she

Vaeslastele ja vaeste lastele oli soovitav õpetada mõnda (soovitatavalt kaubanduslikku) eriala, et nad saaksid täiskasvanutena iseseisvalt hakkama (Roosileht, lk 269-270). Nende jaoks, kes suutsid, aga ei soovinud tööd teha, hakkas välja kujunema inglise ühiskonnale iseloomulik ühiskondliku hoolekande vorm - abi ühiskondliku töö pakkumise kaudu. Alates 1597. aastast tuli valdades määrata kindlad isikud, vaeste järelevaatajad (Ouerseer of the Poor), kes pidid annetusi koguma ja õiglaselt jagama. Kogu kujunev sotsiaalhoolekandesüsteem korrastus 1601. aasta vaesteseaduses (Poor Law), mis võttis varasema arengu kokku ning sätestas vaeste ja hoolekandega seonduva ühes seaduses. Selle olulisemad põhimõtted olid järgmised: · kõikides valdades kehtestati kohustuslik vaeste toetamiseks mõeldud maks (Poor Rate); · toetuse jagamist hakkas jälgima spetsiaalne ametnik (Overseers);
She never again saw her mother or sister. After a few months' training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work. On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those

St. Olaf's church was first mentioned in an earlier predecessor in year 1267. The church itself was dedicated to the holy Olav, who was announced saint after his death. Olav's name is derived from the Scandinavian Olaf. Legend of master, who make Union with Satan and built churches, it is used by explanation of St. Olaf's Church bilding story. As well Olev is known in old folksongs. 4 Legend of Old Thomas A long time ago a poor widow named Kala-May lived in Tallinn with her son Thomas. The girl turned around and saw some blue stripes waving, but soon they were gone again. "Um, who is it?" she asked after a minute of silence, but the person who stood there was already gone. The next noise she heard were someone's fast, almost running feet on the stairs that led to her chamber-room. Soon the door opened and a warm hug followed it was her older sister, Mary. Laurel wanted to say `good morning!' like she always did, but something in sister's crying voice stopped her. "Oh poor Laurel!" said Mary, "When Elisa entered the kitchen and said you didn't notice her, I...I just..." And she started to cry, feeling very helpless at the moment. Laurel whispered then, "Don't be sad! I'm sure the doctor will help me! I feel like in a dream...it's so..." But she couldn't be strong any more and soon tears overhold her as well. Fast footsteps were heard again, but this time an older man entered the small room. "The doctor is here, Mary
