Kuressaare castle

On September 15, 1710 the Swedish garrison, ravished by the plague, surrendered to the Russian army with no resistance. After Russia founded Bomarsund castle on just-occupied land islands and in the vicinity of the Swedish capital, Kuressaare was once and for all excluded from the list of the fortifications of the Tsarist Russia in 1836. A year before the castle had been sold to the Knighthood of Saaremaa for 3,000 roubles During 1904-1912 the convent building was renovated by architects W. Neumann and H.Seuberlich. The two upper floors of the Defence Tower were constructed anew; the window frames in the cloister of the main floor were restored and the wall between the chapel and the festive refectory rebuilt; some of the doors were relocated and windows widened; new ovens and staircases were built; stone plates with the coats-of-arms of the local noblemen were mured into wall of the cloister.

life.[10] At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. She never again saw her mother or sister. After a few months' training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work.

The look is pure subservience. The white-painted face with lips like a red gash is framed by a dead straight curtain of dark gloss hair. It is a stark image of Geisha. This is Madonna the woman who sums up feisty independence in the post-feminist era posing as a silent submissive geisha girl. She is the mistress of reinvention. From the moment the Detroit convent girl hitch-hiked to New York 20 years ago with a burning ambition to be the world's most famous woman, she has shown an amazing talent for transformation. It is no coincidence that Steven Spielberg is looking for a woman of his adaption of Arthur Golden's best-selling novel, Memories of a Geisha. And if her new Geisha look is a part of Madonna's campaign to secure the part, who can blame her? Madonna has always been a brilliant consolidator of trends, picking up on an existing look

The convent was divided into three parts. The central part was the church with its 34-metre-high gable. The left wing was for the nuns and the priests lived in the right wing

Covent Garden was originally named Convent Garden because it was London's biggest frukt, vegetable and flower market, but in 1974 the market moved away. In 1980 the Covent Garden became a modern shopping Enter and tourist attraction with shops, eating places, street performers and musicians. The famous Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet are at Covent Garden.

The bride wore a silk dress with pearls and lace. The veil was held in place with a crown of orange blossoms. The bride carried the same flowers in her bouquet. Later she left the bouquet in the church, put it on a relative's grave, or sent it to the convent where she studied. After the ceremony the members of the family signed the register. The guests then went to the bride's home for the banquet. The bride cut the cake and gave pieces of it to single girls to put under their pillows. When the guests began to dance, the bride and her mother went to the bridal chamber where she took off her wedding clothes and changed into her nightgown. The traditional faith was still strong, however; the king was overthrown and killed in battle. He was canonised after death and the cult of his name spread all over Scandinavia. The earliest written record about the church date back to 1267, when Queen Margarethe of Denmark granted the female Cistercian convent of St. Michael the advowson over the St. Olaf's Church. But major reconstruction followed in the 14 th -15th centuries. The tower standing separate from the church was completed in 1364. The fire of 1433 claimed the St.Olaf's Church besides other buildings. It was consecrated for service again in a few years later, as well as decided to be reconstructed larger. The new church, whose construction required the demolition of the old nave and chapels, was completed as a three-nave basilica

When she learned of his designs, Sophia conspired with the leaders of the Streltsy, who continually aroused disorder and dissent. Peter, warned by the Streltsy, escaped in the middle of the night to the impenetrable monastery of Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra; there he slowly gathered adherents who perceived he would win the power struggle. Sophia was eventually overthrown, with Peter I and Ivan V continuing to act as co-tsars. Peter forced Sophia to enter a convent, where she gave up her name and her position as a member of the royal family. Still, Peter could not acquire actual control over Russian affairs. Power was instead exercised by his mother, Natalya Naryshkina. It was only when Natalya died in 1694 that Peter, now age 22, became an independent sovereign. Formally, Ivan V remained a co-ruler with Peter, although he was ineffective. Peter became the sole ruler when Ivan died in 1696. Peter was 24 years old.
