The Origins of American Literature

" In this way most of the reforms were attempts to awaken and regenerate the human spirit rather than to prescribe particular and concrete movements which were to be fostered. The transcendentalists were, for instance, among the early advocates of the enfranchisement of women. Ultimately, despite these practical manifestations, transcendentalism was an epistemology, a way of knowing, and the ultimate characteristics which tied together the frequently contradictory beliefs of the loosely formed group called "The Transcendentalists" was the belief that man can intuitively transcend the limits of the senses and of logic and receive directly higher truths and greater knowledge denied to the mundane methods of knowing. Among the most famous of the transcendental leaders, in addition to Emerson, Thoreau and Alcott were Margaret Fuller, George Ripley, F.H. Hedge, James Freeman Clark, Elizabeth Peabody, Theodore Parker, Jones Very, and W.H. Channing

punctuation. Emotional pauses are introduced to draw attention to the word or phrase that follows and thus emphasize this word or phrase (e.g. "Do you mean to say that she is still / (a pause is marked) a virgin?"). Here the emotional pause corresponds to a dash and strengthen the speaker's disbelief (e.g. "She is so gentle so / gently cruel." there is no punctuation in the sentence but the pause occurs before "gently cruel" to emphasize the contradictory nature of the character expressed by two incompatible adjectives (case of oxymoron). Such pauses may be marked in a text and may be introduced by a speaker. STRESS: We can speak about logical stress it singles out words that are primary in the context (e.g. "I didn't mean you, I mean everybody."). Stress that is used to single out words that are emotionally important or to point out their hidden or specific meaning is called emphatic (e.g. "I told you he

(Living corpse, calm nervous laughter) In colloquial speech such phrases have become clichés (terribly sorry, awfully nice). Function: to stress contradictory nature of something. Hyperbole--a transfer of meaning based on exaggeration. It should not be taken literary. Oxymoron is a combination of 2 words (attributive and adverbial), the meaning of which clash (e.g.: living corpse, shout silently). If repeated frequently, an oxymoron may lose its stylistic quality and become a colloquial phrase (e.g. awfully nice). The function of oxymoron is to stress, to bring out contradictory notions (e.g. an old young man). 3. Hyperbole is used to evoke an emotional response, irony, humor. Hyperbole is an exaggeration not to be taken literally. Through frequent repetition hyperbole becomes trite: "scared to death", "a thousand pardons" etc. Hyperbole is often combined with metaphor. Round numerals used in hyperbole seem rather trite (e.g. "I feel a hundred years old." trite. "I feel ninety-seven years old." original hyperbole). 4

to which the word `singing' is usually applied." A more common type of Implicative relations 161 example is when the speaker's sentence is too obviously false; Grice cites sarcasm there. Grice suggests that his theory will account for metaphor, since metaphori- cal utterances typically flout (M3): Examples like "You are the cream in my coffee" characteristically involve categorical falsity, so the contradictory of what the speaker has made as if to say will, strictly speaking, be a truism; so it cannot be that that such a speaker is trying to get across. The most likely supposition is that the speaker is attributing to his audience some feature or features in respect of which the audience resembles (more or less fancifully) the mentioned substance. (p. 53) We shall assess this suggestion in chapter 14.

I am aware of the complexity and difficulty of the task I have undertaken. Estonian symphonic music: this is a wide world of sound, full of contradictory artistic ideas, strivings, explorations, discoveries, success and failure. This is the musical chronicle of an epoch already lived. Naturally, one person cannot grasp it totally with all its multiple manifestations: it seems impossible. Therefore we have to have certain reservations when evaluating the works of composers who are still writing. There is no temporal distance between music and the listener. When the leaders called for questions at the end of the lecture, he raised his hand and gently but surely demolished the presentation we had just heard. In less than two minutes, he pointed out precisely where and why the lec- turers' complex argument was contradictory, illogical, and unsupportable. The ef- fect on the discussion leaders was devastating. After a confused silence, each attempted a weak reply only to halt midway to confer with his partner and finally to admit that my colleague's points were good ones "requiring further study." More interesting to me, though, was the effect upon the rest of the audience. At the end of the question period, the two recruiters were faced with a crowd of au-

dolls of the USA) Siamese - more of an intermediate type. Frances Simpson, editor of "The Book of the Cat" (1903) included contributions from several early breeders of Siamese cats. While acknowledging the existence of blues, blacks, whites and tabbies in Siam, she stated that only the "Royal Siamese" and "Chocolate Siamese" were recognised in England at that time. These were sometimes bred to each other although opinions on the quality of the offspring were contradictory. The royal Siamese was sometimes bred to white short-hairs because the English type was preferred over the foreign type by judges. Because white is dominant and masks other colours, "sports" with "any other colour" points occurred a generation or two later. Most early breeders considered the Siamese cat to be more delicate than the English cat, having delicate lungs and being prone to disease and other upsets. Many did not risk sending their precious cats to shows

Such an angle is not an alien one to other nations either – here and there, since its very appearance, jazz has created contradictory opinions varying from deep admiration to total denial and ban. Thus the aim of this study has been to find out how jazz reached Estonia, its scope of penetration in Estonia, factors facilitating or hindering this and its influence on the general cultural (and musical) background. get what I need to be fully myself; I need to get more so that I can be more. But you cannot be more than you are because underneath your physical and psychological form, you are one with Life itself, one with Being. In form, you are and will always be inferior to some, superior to others. In essence, you are neither inferior nor superior to anyone. True self-esteem and true humility arise out of that realization. In the eyes of the ego, self-esteem and humility are contradictory. In truth, they are one and the same. THE PATHOLOGICAL EGO In a wider sense of the word, the ego itself is pathological, no matter what form it takes. When we look at the ancient Greek root of the word pathological, we discover just how appropriate that term is when applied to the ego. originality. Nobody wants to see a movie or read a story about abstract qualities in human form. W e want stories about real people. A real character, like a real person, is not just a single trait but a unique combination of many qualities and drives, some of them conflicting. And the more conflicting, the better. A character torn by warring allegiances to love and duty is inherently interesting to an audience. A character who has a unique combination of contradictory impulses, such as trust and suspicion or hope and despair, seems more realistic and human than one who displays only one character trait. A well-rounded Hero can be determined, uncertain, charming, forgetful, impatient, and strong in body but weak at heart, all at the same time. It's the particular combination of qualities that gives an audience the sense that the Hero is one of a kind, a real person rather than a type. GROWTH

The 4-Hour Body - An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman - Timothy Ferriss

Start the diet at least ve days before your designated cheat day. If you choose Saturday, for example, I would suggest starting your diet on a Monday. That's All, Folks! If the founding fathers could sum up our government in a six-page constitution, the above is all we need to summarize rapid fat-loss for 99.99% of the population. Followed to the letter, I've never seen it fail. Never. never seen it fail. Never. When you feel mired in details or confused by the latest-and-greatest contradictory advice, return to this short chapter. All you need to remember is: Rule #1: Avoid "white" carbohydrates (or anything that can be white). Rule #2: Eat the same few meals over and over again. Rule #3: Don't drink calories. Rule #4: Don't eat fruit. Rule #5: Take one day off per week and go nuts. For the finer points, we have the next chapter.
