Task 1. Turn active voice sentences into passive voice. Only keep the agent (by phrase= where absolutely necessary . Please remember that tense form (tegusõna aeg) should remain the same when the sentence is transformed into passive.
E.g. Chimps eat bananas ( Present Simple Active) → Bananas are eaten by chimps. (Present Simple Passive)

  • Task3. Causative constructions. Please convert the sentence structures according to logic of the samples.
  • SECTION A
  • E.g. Did you fix the car yourself? → No, I had it fixed
  • Are they going to paint the walls themselves? → No, they are going to have them painted.

  • Do you test your eyes yourself? Of course not, I always have them tested.
  • Are you redecorating your living room yourself? Well, not really . I am having it redecorated by a handyman who can do the job at an affordable cost .
  • Will you please wash your cars yourselves next time? No way! As always, we will have them washed in a car wash joint.
  • Should students mark their tests themselves? Certainly not! Students should have them marked by the teacher .
  • Have you ever changed tyres on your car by yourself? No never ! So far, I have (always) had them changed by car mechanics.
  • SECTION B
  • E.g. Contrary to his words , he had not painted the ceiling by himself → He had had it painted by a hired professional.
  • Unlike her mom, she has never done any homework by herself → She has always had it done by someone else .

  • In fact , she does not write books by herself. Instead, she has/ gets them written (for herself) by several ghost writers (variautor).
  • Honestly, I do not believe that Emily herself trimmed (pügas) the hedge (hekk) so neatly. I am of the opinion that she had/got it trimmed/done by Mr Proper , the gardener.
  • It is a common knowledge that Mr Lynx has not composed any of his motivational speeches by himself. Instead of making an effort himself, he has had/got them composed by a qualified language expert .
  • Most men do not press their trousers by themselves. Traditionally, men prefer to have/get them pressed/done by their wives. In the same sex families of the future, however, this tradition is bound to change for sure .
  • The majority of people cannot fix their motor vehicle nowadays. Therefore they are willing to pay a huge amount of money to have/get the smallest of problems fixed by car mechanics.

  • TASK4. Translate the following sentences into English, using passive or causative where possible.
  • Sa peaksid laskma oma tervist regulaarselt kontrollida ning käima vähemalt 8000 meetrit iga päev, et olla heas füüsilises vormis ( physical form).

  • Õnn väidetakse olevat väikestes igapäevastes asjades nagu toetav perekond, paras hulk igapäevaseid kohustusi ja viimaks käputäis hobisid, mis ei lase igavusel tekkida.

  • Happiness is claimed to be in small everyday things like a supportive family, a fair amount of daily commitments and finally a handful of hobbies , which does not let the boredom set in.
