    Legends of Tallinn
Tallinn is a city of legends, and almost every house has its story to told – some of them are nicer, some of them are more terrible. As it is with ethnic stories, every teller adds something of his own. Because of that many legends have been difficult to find a specific historical background. Some of them even tend to be more science fictional than true. A unique color is added by old- fashioned style and language .
Tallinn has a long and complicated history. Tallinn has had more than twenty different names . Tallinn was for the first time mentioned in written sources in the Arab geographer al- Idrisi 's in 1154. Tallinn has survived many historical events. Over the centuries , has Tallinn been reflected in ethnical stories - in numerous legends. In some areas the number of stories may reach tens. For example, a legend of St. Olaf 's church , which is known around the legend of eighty, tells how the Estonians wanted that their city would be famous . The habitants of Tallinn let the chuch built by a mighty man. Unknown man said that he will build the church free if they guess his name. What in fackt happend. The church was named as its builder . And the sculpture of the snake and frog , which came out from Olaf’f mouth, are there nowadays .
According to legend, there were some difficulties to find a right place where to build
    4
Tallinn. It was decided to ask for advice from the wiseman. The wiseman told to put a
stone on to the horsecart and wathe where the stone falls , it is the right place to build the city. Having reached up with a flat place, the rock rolled to the center of the hill and there was the city built.
Tallinn is named by a roe-deer, who died here . King Valdemar loved the deer so much, he let to capture it alive. When roe-deer saw that he was restrained, so he started to run randomly and then he fell, because of fear and weariness, down of the seashore and broke its neck. Tallinns German name Reval is deriverd from the word Reh – Fall (roe-deer falling).
According to the legends, Tallinn is a city which is never ready. Indeed, once each autumn goes dark at midnight, one small gray man from the Ülemiste lake. He goes to the city gates and asks from the gate guard if the city is completed or is it still in the middle of the building process . Because of that the guard has to answer that the city is not completed jet and the constructions are still going on. Then the old man goes away . If, however , answered him by mistake, that the city is ready, then Ülemiste lake floats Tallinn with its water.
Formerly, there was a cloister on the Vene street , what was burnt down. Old dungeons are preserved even nowadays. When the building was redecorated, then there were found many humanbones. It is believed that the owner of the Mathiesen print shop had trouble with ghost , who made the printing machines work in the middle of night . However, when the owner went to see, what is wrong, the machines stopped working and everything was silent .
    5
The current Vana street was known as Vaimu street. One house there ise known for its ghost stories.
There is also a legend for the hous which is situatet at the Suur Karja 10. Suur Karja 10 habitants remember those years , when the house was hunted. At nights there were steps and mysterious voices. In 1928, when the building was renovated, a skeleton was found between the walls. It is not known why the man was killed in this way.
There are two stories for the Ratsakaevu street. First of them tells about a Kassikaevu. Formerly, there was a well on the Ratsakaevu street. There was a wheel attatched to the well, what helped to get the water out of the well. It is said that because of that wheel , was that street named as Ratsakaevu street. Townspeople, however, called the pit instead Kassikaev. It is said that one nixie lived in that well and it was believed that the nixie will float Tallinn. Because of that the habitants sacrificed every year many cattles, especially many dead cats . Because of that the well got its name – Kassikaevu. After many years the well was closed.
The other story about the Ratsakaevu street is about the wedding of the devil . There is a story about one precise house on that street. The house owner, to whom the house belonged to the past, dropped his fortune so recklessly, that he no longer knew what to do. One evening , he was so desperation that he decided to end his life. But just at that moment came in the room someone unknown, who asked to be allowed to throw a party on the upper floor of the house. In return of a favor , the stranger promised riches, but only on condition that one does not hear the
    6
celebrations, otherwise the listener dies. The house owner agreed. At a specified
time, the house was filled with beautiful music and the house was filled with dancers steps. When the clock striked one, it all was gone . The house owner had to get a lot of money . He had a lot of debts, and now he could paid those debts – that made the owner happie. At the same time his buttler died because he said that he listened secretly the wedding of the devil.

    Conclusion
Visiting this old-town will guarantee you a feeling , of being a part of the medivel society, wich is full of knights, merchants, and noblemans. Old Tallinn has so much to give, but you must be able to take it.

Tallinn Lillekyla Gymnasium Report Legends of Tallinn Tallinn 2009 Introduction I chose the topic ,,Legends of Tallinn", because I had heard some splendid myths about Tallinn from my history lessons and I was eager to widen my horizon. I am quite interested in history in general and I especially love tales about medieval Tallinn. I hope that I will find out some entertaining stories to tell my friends. Legends of Tallinn There are many interesting legends about buildings or sights in Tallinn. Nobody can tell, if they are all true or not, but at least they make the medieval capital much more intriguing and attractive for tourists as for the locals. How Ülemiste Elder will drown the town The most known legend of Tallinn is probably about the mythological Ülemiste Elder,

Chapter1: An unknown woman was found lying in the street and brought into the workhouse. She delivered a sickly child who had trouble breathing. The woman, without a word of who she was, died and left her new born boy, Oliver, to the drunken nurse that stood by. Chapter2: The State gave Oliver to Mrs. Mann who housed a number of orphaned children. Mrs. Mann took a large portion of the money given to her by the authorities for each child's food so Oliver grew up small and malnourished. On his ninth birthday, the town beadle, Mr. Bumble, came to collect Oliver and take him to the board for an interview. They told him he was to live with other wards of the state to become educated and learn a trade. Oliver did not mind this, but soon after he arrived, the state decided to implement a plan that would save money by feeding the people very little. After a time on this diet, the boys at the table chose Oliver to go ask the head cook for more gruel. Oliver did this, and was taken away. A flye
