A bunch of opinions about ’’Twilight’’. From a single person , actually.
I have read Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight for three times already . The first time, I read it, I dug into it with little or no expectations, when it had just recently been published and had not yet become as immensely popular as it is right now, especially in Estonia, as it had not yet been translated. But the hype was already building up in American social networking sites, and since the book was already being referred to as the ´´next Harry Potter ´´, I obviously had to read it.
It is somewhat embarrassing to admit, that at first, before giving much in-depth thought about what was written between those pages, I was quite incredibly fascinated with ´´Twilight´´. I got so attached to the book that I couldn’t even spare ten minutes to take a break in order to have something to eat or rest my eyes , when my vision got all blurry (it was an eBook ). Eventually my best friend managed to lure me to her place (it took her much effort) and even then, I secretly downloaded the book to her computer and carried on reading, my only response to her chatter being an occasional glance, nod or ’’mmh’’.
To someone, who obviously has a certain fondness for Twilight, not much explanation is needed to why I so suddenly fell unexplainably, deeply in love with it.
However , even then, I wasn’t entirely blinded, or at least blinded enough not to notice the poor writing skills of the author , the blandness and lack of development of the characters and several cringeworthy scenes that I was able to forgive, at first.
So I decided to re-read it, with a more critical view, eventually coming to a conclusion , that frankly, ’’Twilight’’ is one incredibly shoddy piece of literature. Shoddy enough to be somewhat enjoyable, likeable, or so-called ’’guilty pleasure’’, but still , completely , utterly, supremely, exceedingly shoddy.
So what do I think, why so many people love ’’Twilight’’?
Since Meyer left one important detail – the main character ’s personality – unwritten and pretty much up for interpretation , absolutely anyone can imagine themselves into Bella ’s place. And apparently, that is precisely what they do – what I did. Which makes the imagination even easier , is that there are a few hints on certain traits – such as clumsiness – that asbolutely every single human being can relate to, and for the first time in their lives, while reading ’’Twilight’’, they are encouraged to feel special about it – they are encouraged to feel as if they might as well be the next love itnerest of a steamingly attractive vampire.
To me, Bella really seems to be an incredibly unfortunate creature. She doesn’t seem able to be happy about anything , doesn’t have any hobbies or real friends , because apparently their unperfectness seems to annoy her, as well as the fact that there are people around her, that take interest in her, even though she is portrayed in the book as an empty, emotionless doll, with a three-track mind : „Edward“-„“Edward’s toned chest “- „ Charlie ’s dinner every once in a while“ (thank god for the last one!) Nothing else really seems to interest her. I liked her in the first chapter , especially her witty, sarcastic jokes , remarks and observations, which gave the character a great potential to develop, but eventually it failed miserably.
And yet, everyone seems to like Bella, including the oh-so-desirable male vampire, who never in his immortal life has loved another human being before. It is somewhat understood , why Bella loves Edward – he is hot (even though his hotness is quite useless in their relationship , since it was repeatedly stated, that they could never get intimate) but the way Edward’s love for Bella is explained is quite atrocious. Apparently she smells yummy. And he thinks she’s interesting , because he can’t hear her thoughts. Too bad he’s mistaken, but I might say that Bella got really lucky with this one.
I do understand that this is just a fantasy novel and not everything has to be deeply realistic and thoroughly explained, but I simply can’t understand the dynamics of their relationship. Which is worse , the book makes young girls long for that kind of a creepy, overprotective and somewhat abusive partnership. It sends out a message , that it’s perfectly fine, even romantic, to have a boy secretly watch you in your sleep for two months and that it’s okay to feel dependant on or possessive about another person -- a person, who they have nothing in common with and have really nothing to talk about, besides their feelings for each other and the fact that he might turn batsh #t and eat her any second. And she, instead of running at the door , or at least acknowledgning the irresponsibility for her own life, carries on marvelling over his bronze hair, marble skin, sweet breath, sculpted chest and every other part of his finely toned body , that is repeatedly described in purple prose.
I do not hate ’’Twilight’’, nor do I disrespect the people who really like the book , I’ve just grown tired of the hype and cult surrounding the series, and therefore might get somewhat passionate about my list of reasons why ’’Twilight’’ shouldn’t be considered ’’th3 bEST book eva written!!!!11’’, therefore I admit that, to me, the novel is a victim of bad publicity. At least Stephenie Meyer couldn’t complain too much, considering that the all the publicity surrounding the book has brought her an estimated fortune of $125 million.
PS! If you were wondering, why I read it for three times, then the third time was only to freshen my memory and put together a list of expressions for the English class.
