Witch Child Summary

Summary: While watching her grandmother go to the gallows to hang for witchcraft in 1659 England, Mary Newbery is abducted by a wealthy woman before the suspicious mob turns their lynching attentions to her. The book is written as a series of diary entries that chronicle her many adventures as a 17th century orphan with genuine knowledge of witchcraft. Mary is packed off to join Puritans headed to the New World. She is informally adopted by good friends who accept her strong-willed nature and and knowledge of herbs, medicines, and midwifery. To escape the oppressive atmosphere of the village and the stringent Puritan expectations, Mary retreats to the woods where she befriends a local Native American boy. Despite dire warnings from all who care about her, Mary persists in keeping her journal, gal...

The Price of Everlasting Youth

Basil arrives to question Dorian about rumours of his indulgences, Dorian takes Basil to the portrait upstairs. The portrait is hideous as Dorian's sins. In anger, Dorian blames Basil for his fate and stabs him to death. Dorians is also the reason, why his first love, a very beautiful and talented actress named Sibyl Vane kills herself. The need to be different, superior to others, gets Dorian eventually killed. He wants to redeem his sins. Unfortunately, he lacks the feeling of quilt and fearing the consequences, he goes out for the painting the only conscienceness he has (since the painting hides all his sins). He stabs the painting with a knife. Later, Dorian body is found with a knife in his heart. The painting had reverted to its original form.

never on exactly the same page. Sometimes I wondered if I was seeing the same things through my eyes that the rest of the world was seeing through theirs. Maybe there was a glitch in my brain. But the cause didn't matter. All that mattered was the effect. And tomorrow would be just the beginning. I didn't sleep well that night, even after I was done crying. The constant whooshing of the rain and wind across the roof wouldn't fade into the background. I pulled the faded old quilt over my head, and later added the pillow, too. But I couldn't fall asleep until after midnight, when the rain finally settled into a quieter drizzle. Thick fog was all I could see out my window in the morning, and I could feel the claustrophobia creeping up on me. You could never see the sky here; it was like a cage. In other places, it survived, embedded in a literature, and from this the next generation could climb to higher levels. But progress was slow and jerky. More was lost than retained. Much of the history of cryptology of this time is a patchwork, a crazy quilt of unrelated items, sprouting, flourishing, withering. Only toward the Western Renaissance does the accreting knowledge begin to build up a momentum. The story of cryptology during these years is, in other words, exactly the story of mankind. China, the only high civilization of antiquity to use ideographic writing, seems never to have developed much real cryptography— perhaps for that reason. In one case known for military purposes, the
