Introduction
New Zealand is an island country in the southwest of Oceania. The Tasman sea separates New Zealand from Australia . The basic parts of New Zealand are the North Island and the South Island. Wellington - which is located on the South Island - is the most southern capital city in the world, but the biggest city in New Zealand is Auckland.
There are three official languages in New Zealand: English , Maori and the New Zealand’s Sign Language . In Maori language the island is also called Aotearoa (which means “Pika Valge Pilve Maa” in Estonian).
The Cook Islands and Niue - which are both independent as free accociations - also belong to New Zealand domains. According to antropologists’ statements New Zealand, Hawaii and Easter Island constitute the Polynesian Triangle.
The currency used in New Zealand is dollar (NZD). The present head of state is HM Queen Elizabeth II and the prime minister is John Key.
Area. Population. Climate
The total area is 268,680 km² and the population is approximately 4,266,000. The density of population is about 16.1/km2. New Zealand’s area is a bit smaller than Italy ’s or Japan ’s but bigger than England ’s.
The biggest of New Zealand’s islands is South Island. On the South Island there are 18 mountains that are higher than 3000m. The highest mountain is Cook mountain - it’s 3754m high.
North Island isn’t as mountainous as South Island but it’s volcanic . The highest mountain there is Ruapehu mountain - it’s 2797m high and currently active .
The landscape of New Zealand is very popular with making movies and TV- shows - for example the trilogy of “Lord of the Rings ” and “The Last Samurai” are filmed there.
The climate is temperate all over the country. The temperature rarely goes under 0°C or over 30° in populated areas . The weather on the west coast is moist and cool. In the Mackenzie hollow it turns drier and on the North-Auckland peninsula the climatic zone is almost tropical. The highest temperature in New Zealand taken is 42.2 °C and the lowest -21.6 °C.
The driest city in New Zealand is on the South Island and it’s named Christchurch. The rainfall in Christchurch is only 640mm per year , but in Auckland - which is the wettest city - it rains twice as much.
The northern and the north- eastern parts of the South Island are the sunniest areas in New Zealand - the people out there have about 100 sunny days a year.
Economy. Largest Cities
Economy in New Zealand is very modern and developed . It’s GDP is about 101,688 billion dollars (data from 2005). Country’s GDP is ~$26,400 per one resident (for example in Australia it’s $31,900 and in USA $41,800).
New Zealand is a country which mostly bases on its bargaining, agricultural production . 20% of agricultural produce is exported. Most important export partners are Australia, USA, Japan, China , Germany .
The country’s biggest incomes comes from tourism . Every year about 2 million tourists visit New Zealand - it’s marketed as a green and clean adventurous place . Typical tourist attractions there are bungee jumping and whale watching .
The capital city of New Zealand is Wellington, but it isn’t the largest one. The largest city is Auckland and after that comes Christchurch. Wellington is the third-largest city in New Zealand.
In Auckland the population is 1,333,300 million. It’s obviously the most populous city in New Zealand. Its area is 1,086 km².
Christchurch’s population is 386,100 and its area is 608 km². Wellington isn’t much smaller. Its population is only 100 persons less than Christchurches but the area is much smaller - it’s 444 km².
Culture
The contemporary New Zealand has got very diverse culture, which has been affected by nnglish, scottish , irish and maori cultures. Although most of the immigrants came from England, many people also came from Scotland with earlier British settlers and took along their own cultural elements.
People say that in New Zealand there are more bagpipe ensembles than in Scotland. Thanks to permanent immigration from England and the fact that many young new-zealanders spend time in England for getting “over-sea experiences ”, the cultural connection between New Zealand and England won’t get lost . Also the traditional English language stays preserved.
Every year local people organize the Pacific Islands-themed festival Pasifika. It’s held in Western Springs (a park in the west of the city), Auckland.
Conclusion
In conclusin I might say that New Zealand seems to be a paradise for me. The cities are modern, but people have taken care of nature too. I really would like to go there someday, because I’m a huge fan of green nature. Too bad is the fact that travelling to New Zealand is very expensive .
