when the members of both Houses come together. During the ceremony, the Sovereign reads out the government's intended programme. The "Queen 's Speech" is a summary of the programme "his" or "her" government intends to implement in the next twelve months; but the speech is prepared and written by the Prime Minister's office, not by the Queen. The second major function of the sovereign is to sign new laws passed by Parliament. A bill does not become law, or an Act of Parliament, until it has " received royal assent ", meaning that it has been been signed by the Sovereign. The last major function of the sovereign - in the parliamentary context - is his or her weekly meeting with the Prime Minister. By tradition, the latter informs the Sovereign, who is head of state, about important affairs of state and government business, and asks the sovereign for his or her opinion. With over 60 years of experience, the current Queen Elizabeth II has acquired

Total station problems

If the instrument is levelled, then the horizontal circle is placed into a horizontal plane and the vertical circle is placed into a vertical plane (horizontal and vertical angles can be measured in their proper planes). Earlier total stations had bubble tubes for levelling, later ones use automatic compensators. A surveyor roughly levels the total station using its leveling screws (three of them), then the magnitude of any leveling errors present are received by the instrument’s microprocessor, which will make appropriate corrections to the values of the measured horizontal and vertical angles. At first it is needed to firmly set up the tripod (as horizontal as possible with the eye), then it is needed to secure the total station on the tripod with a centering screw. Then it is convenient to use plumb bobs for approximate centering before using the plummets

well. Yet, still, already Yet means that something is expected to happen. Have you had a holiday yet? (It’s time to have a holiday.) Still means ‘going on longer than expected’. I’m still working on my project. (There is no time for a holiday yet.) Already means ‘sooner than expected’. I’ve already passed all the exams. (Long before the deadline.) Yet usually goes at the end of a negative statement or question. Kate has received a present, but she hasn’t opened it yet. Have they sent you the tickets yet? – No, not yet. 6 In a positive statement, still and already usually go in mid position, like adverbs of degree and frequency. I sent her an e-mail a week ago, and am still waiting for a reply. You don’t have to tell me that horrible news, I already know. Still can be used in a negative statement, where it goes before haven’t, can’t, etc.

as women's rights. Lincoln's death At Abraham Lincoln's memorial, Douglass was in the audience while a tribute to Lincoln was being given by a prominent lawyer. The tribute was not as successful as some of the audience there would have hoped. Reluctantly, Douglass was goaded by the people to stand up and speak. At first out of respect for the speaker he declined, but eventually he gave into the pressure and with no preparation gave a fantastic tribute to the President for which he received much respect. The crowd, roused by his speech, gave him a standing ovation. A witness later said, "I have heard Clay speak and many fantastic men, but never have I heard a speech as impressive as that." [citation needed] While this is anecdotal, it is a 6 commonly accepted fact that Lincoln's wife gave Douglass Lincoln's favorite walking stick which still rests in Cedar Lodge

Cost Accounting notes

Chapter 14 - cost allocation, customer-profitability analyses, sales-variance analysis Purpose of allocating indirect costs: 1. To provide information for economic decisions 2. To motivate managers and other employees 3. To justify costs or compute reimbursement amounts 4. To measure income and assets. Criteria to guide cost- allocation decisions: 1. Cause and effect - managers identify the variables that cause resources to be consumed. 2. Benefits received - mangers identify the beneficiaries of the outputs of the cost object. The costs of the cost object are allocated among the beneficiaries in proportion to the benefits each receives. 3. Fairness or equity - often cited in government contracts when cost allocations are the basis for establishing a price satisfactory to the government and its suppliers. 4. Ability to bear - allocating costs in proportion to the cost object's ability to bear cost allocated to it

first sign is the way a person talks. People from different social classes eat different food at different times of day, they like to talk about different topics using different styles and accents of English, they enjoy different sports, they have different values about what things are most important in life and different ideas about the correct way to behave. 10. Standard English is used `naturally' in everyday speech by between 15% and 30% of the population in Britain. Received Pronunciation (RP) is used in everyday speech by only 3% to 12% of the population. So why is Standard English with an RP accent the usual model for people learning British English as a foreign language? What justification can you find for this practise? 11. Can you think of examples of British individualism? Love of the countryside is a good example of individualism and conservatism the countryside represents stability. Also British people are much more reserved than

MARRIAGE Prince Charles had known Diana for several years, but he first took a serious interest in her as a potential bride during the summer of 1980, when they were guests at a country weekend, where she watched him play polo. The relationship developed as he invited her for a sailing weekend to Cowes, followed by an invitation to meet his family. There, Diana was well received by Queen Elizabeth II, by Prince Philip, and by the Queen Mother. The Prince proposed on 6 February 1981, and Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks. Their engagement became official on the 24 th of February in 1981, after Diana selected a large ring consisting of 14 diamonds, similar to her mother's engagement ring. 20-year-old Diana became The Princess of Wales when she married Charles. Renaissance

Under Elizabeth, order was restored and England entered upon her most glorious age. Elizabeth ruled wisely and well for 45 years. Through her policy of middle-of-the-road Protestantism, she held in check throughout her reign the proponents of Catholicism on one hand and the growing numbers of Puritan extremists on the other. A master politician, wise in the choice of her councilors, Elizabeth established a strong central government that received the loyal support of her subjects. 10. What led England to become a world power? During Elizabeth's reign, England began to gain supremacy on the seas. Threatened by an invasion from the long-time enemy, the King of Spain, Elizabeth sent Hawkins and Drake out to destroy the Spanish Armada. England's increasing population created new markets and brought about the exploitation of new sources of raw materials, among them those of the New World

In December 1995 Elizabeth wrote to Prince Charles and Princess Diana urging them to divorce, following the Princess's public statements about their marriage, which led to formal divorce proceedings being instituted. The couple were formally divorced on August 28, 1996. Following the death of Diana from injuries received in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, Elizabeth came in for some public criticism for the apparent coolness of her response. Her live broadcast to the nation in tribute to Diana, which she made a week after the crash, partly restored public opinion. Diana's death, however, sparked much debate on the role of the monarchy, its perceived lack of "popular" touch, the formality of its institutions, and its size in terms of the number of royals with public duties.

During his short life, his work received constant critical attacks from periodicals of the day, but his posthumous influence on poets such as Alfred Tennyson has been immense. Elaborate word choice and sensual imagery characterize Keats's poetry; including a series of odes that were his masterpieces and which remain among the most popular poems in English literature. Ode is a form of stately and elaborate lyrical verse. A classic ode is structured in three parts: the strophe, the antistrophe, and the epode

Brian Mech, Second Sight's vice president for business development, said the company was seeking federal approval to market the 60-electrode version, which would cost up to $100,000 and might be covered by insurance. Also planned are 200- and 1,000-electrode versions; the higher number might provide enough resolution for reading. (Dr. Mech said a maximum electrode number would eventually be reached because if they are packed too densely, retinal tissue could be burned.) "Every subject has received some sort of visual input," he said. "There are people who aren't extremely impressed with the results, and other people who are." Jane Austen

Bingley had never met with more pleasant people or prettier girls in his life; everybody had been most kind and attentive to him; there had been no formality, no stiffness; he had soon felt acquainted with all the room; and, as to Miss Bennet, he could not conceive an angel more beautiful. Darcy, on the contrary, had seen a collection of people in whom there was little beauty and no fashion, for none of whom he had felt the smallest interest, and from none received either attention or pleasure. Miss Bennet he acknowledged to be pretty, but she smiled too much. Mrs. Hurst and her sister allowed it to be so--but still they admired her and liked her, and pronounced her to be a sweet girl, and one whom they would not object to know more of. Miss Bennet was therefore established as a sweet girl, and their brother felt authorized by such commendation to think of her as he chose. Chapter 5

Sotsioloogia essee: Hechter ja Horne

Q: Social order requires social behaviour to be predictable and individuals to cooperate. Amongst the explanations of social order are five outlined by Hechter and Horne: `meaning', `values and norms', `power and authority', `spontaneous interaction' and `networks and groups'. Describe how at least three of these (or other) factors might explain social order, and discuss the extent to which you find the explanations convincing. Introduction For societies to cohere and cooperate, it is necessary for individuals within them to have a predictable and collaborative behaviour. The presence of social order enables individuals to feel more secure publicly, as it enables them to somewhat predict their lives. Social order is also necessary for stability and serves as the basis for collective advancements. There are several theories and explanations for why social order persists and emerges. Margaret Thatcher

The next day on the 4th of May 1979, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She became a very close ally with President Ronald Reagan, elected in 1980 in the United States. Margaret was in office for three terms, 1979-1983, 1983-1987 and 1987-1990. In her first term she tried to enact her ideas about running the economy better, but it did not work out at once. Due to the Falklands War with Argentina in 1982, she received popularity and when the General Elections came in June 1983, the government was re-elected with its Parliamentary majority more than trebled (144 seats). With the wave of patriotism she stayed in power up to 1983 and a short upturn in the economy returned her to third term in office in 1987. Throughout all three terms she pursued economic policies that reduced the power of the unions, decreased public spending, increased personal tax cuts, increased privatization of public utilities and

went to the closest male descendant of the original owner. Since Old Mr. Dashwood has no sons, his estate is bequeathed to his nephew, Henry Dashwood. Henry, in turn, leaves the estate to his eldest son, John. However, as Austen notes, Henry Dashwood's money was far more vital to his daughters than to his son, because John was already provided for both by his mother's fortune--which he inherited as eldest son--and by the money he received by marrying his own wife. (In general, a man inherited all of his wife's money upon marriage, though the wife usually entered into the marriage with a "settlement," a legal document ensuring that some of her property would revert to her or her children following her husband's death.) In this case, the money that Mr. Henry Dashwood's late first wife brought to the marriage was settled on their son John, and therefore could not be used to help his second wife or his daughters by that second wife

The Inchcape Rock

The scene at sea can change very quickly, at one moment being calm and smooth, and at the next with a raging storm. It is absolutely uncontrollable, and so is the best way to show people how small they are when compared to the awesome power of Mother Nature. 3 The Inchcape Rock Robert Southey No stir in the air, no stir in the sea, The ship was still as she could be, Her sails from heaven received no motion, Her keel was steady in the ocean. Without either sign or sound of their shock The waves flow'd over the Inchcape Rock; So little they rose, so little they fell, They did not move the Inchcape Bell. The Abbot of Aberbrothok Had placed that bell on the Inchcape Rock; On a buoy in the storm it floated and swung, And over the waves its warning rung. When the Rock was hid by the surge's swell, The mariners heard the warning bell; And then they knew the perilous Rock

The Seaplane Harbour of Tallinn

On June 9th the same company, "Christiani & Nielsen" was also given the task of constructing the hangars. The company had an advantage, because it had a representative office in St. Petersburg and was involved in the construction of Noblessner's slipway. The actual construction commenced on July 5th, 1916 on the site officially named as Tallinn's Seaplane Harbour and in parallel with the hangars port piers were also constructed. On October 13th, 1917, the construction team received an order to suspend all construction due to the war. Fortunately the hangars were almost ready by that time (only short of large-scale sliding doors, ramps for launching the planes and the floors had no wood cover). These seaplane hangars are unique shell concrete structures, which demonstrate engineering 20 years ahead of its time. The Post-War Years On January 24th, 1945, the secret decision No 010 of the ESSR National Economy Council granted the military a 14

disappearing any time soon. Of course, the book, that has been with the man kind for centuries and amused them, will not be giving up to something, that has only been existing for a few decades. Valga's High School students are generally aware of the changes in today's world, including the changes and achievements of e-book.Majority of students are interested in e-books - they are new and interesting, even though in reality they are just simple text files. With the responses i received from the survey, i can confidently say that printed books will not be disappearing any time soon. Nobody can predict when e-books will reach the top or what the e-readers will look like in the future. Nobody knows whether the paper books will endure for centuries to come or not. Movie review

First of all I expected real mafia being in the center movie. But the key characters were nothing but a punch of stupid thugs who wanted to get rich. Secondly the cops were weak. Specially the commander, Buldooser, played by Peeter Oja. He was supposed to be a though guy but his yelling made him look not so though at all. Also police work and investigating wasn't believable at all. Thirdly the Estonian and Russian languages mix up got so annoying. If one talked in Estonian then he received answer in Russian. At the beginning the solution seemed OK, but it really started to freak out in the end. Actually there was more negative in the film, but it would take a whole day to write this down. It was a huge disappointment. Definitely worth skipping. My conclusion is that it should have shown more Estonian life back then and how was the mafia organized. But half of the action was filmed in Russia so it didn't meet expectations at all. Movie: Shutter Island

Assignment Analysis of literature: prose

Follow these and other oppositions as you continue reading the book. She shows that they don't really get along, or they are very different; hardly communicate with each other etc. 13. What social and political criticism does the chapter contain? Expand on the government policy concerning the Indians and their land. Can we see any racial tensions? Illustrate the devastating effect of alcohol on the Natives. It talks about rich cowboys and lands which Indians received as allotments. The policy of allotment was a joke for them; many of those were sold to whites and lost forever. Racial tensions Indians were not treated as equals. Alcohol makes Indians either crazy or sleepy etc, effect on them is totally different as on whites. 14. Comment on the attitude of the family members to King's new car. Eli didn't like it. Grandma was protecting him. Nobody in the family was proud of it, except for King and Lynette. ,,Nobody leaned against it"

The 1866 peasant township law freed the peasants' local government councils from the landlords' authority and granted them extensive rights to decide their own economic and social affairs. In the 1860s, Estonian peasants began buying farmsteads from the estates, at free market prices. Due to the shortage of land and the large number of buyers, the prices were much higher than in Russia. The peasants made use of long-term bank credits, which they later paid back from income received from growing flax and potatoes. By the end of the 19th century, the peasants in South Estonia (Livonian province) possessed over 80% and in North Estonia (Estonian province) 50% of the available farmland. Influenced by the French Revolution, the ideas of Romanticism and the newly emerging German national consciousness, the mid-19th century also witnessed the national awakening of the Estonians. The leading force in the Estonian national movement was the new elite

Christmas in different countrys(jõulud erinevates maades)

the coming year. When the fire burns, psalms are sung, and when it sinks, everyone leaps over the embers making wishes. Early on Christmas morning everyone goes to Mass. At this Mass another bonfire is lit in the middle of the floor. While the wood is blazing, ancient hymns are sung and the celebrant carries a figure of the Christ Child around the building. After this the celebrant then touches the nearest person in a "touch of peace". This touch is passed from one to another until everyone has received it. Christmas dinner is chicken, oranges, nuts and pastries. But it is on New Year's Day that children receive presents. They are brought their gifts by the youngest of the camels that carried the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem. The children leave water and hay outside the house of the camel. In the morning the water and hay are gone, replaced by presents.

four albums simultaneously in the American Top 40. Early career (19621969) Dwight became a weekend pianist at the nearby Northwood Hills pub, playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. He played everything from Jim Reeves country songs "He'll Have to Go" to Irish tribute numbers "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," old pub favourites such as, "Roll Out The Barrel," hits of the day, "King of the Road," and songs he had written himself. He received a modest, steady income and substantial tips. "During that whole period, I don't think I ever missed a gig," he said later. A stint with a short-lived group called the Corvettes rounded out his time. In 1964, Dwight and his friends formed a band called Bluesology. At the age of 15, with the help of mother Sheila and stepfather "Derf", Reginald By day, he ran errands for a music publishing company; he divided his nights between solo gigs at a London hotel bar and working with Bluesology

History of philosophy

· The longest and most influential of Plato's dialogs. · The dialogue opens with a discussion of old age, but then the question is raised: What is true justice? · A series of attempts to answer this question is given, Thrasymachus (a Sophist) argues that whatever the tyrant demands is just (justice is the interest of the strongest). The rest of dialog can be read as an attempt to refute this suggestion. Justice: 1. Paying back what you have received. 2. You must give good to those who have given good to you and bad to the bad. Justice for the tyrant means the weak serving the stronger. What if the stronger asks the weaker to do something which is not really in his interest? Might makes right.

South Parki lühitutvustus

He has parted brown hair, and, more often than the other children on the show with distinctive head wear, he is seen without his hat. Cartman often teases Kenny about his poverty, with the latter usually reacting angrily. Cartman's resentment of Stan is usually reserved for when Cartman proudly exclaims his hatred for both Stan and Kyle as a duo, and his contempt for Stan as an individual doesn't run as deeply as it does for Kyle. Their relationship has received significant focus in the more recent seasons of the series, and is mostly limited to Cartman's mischievous treatment of Butters. KENNY the poorest kid in the neighborhood, he would wear a tightly-drawn orange parka that muffled his speech. When developing the character, the show's creators had observed that most groups of childhood friends in small middle-class towns always included "the one poor kid", and

Translation history

Summary • Early history of translation studies – Cicero and St. Jerome (what did they do/how/why are they relevant to translation studies?) St. Jerome – Greek scholar, did some translation work. Lived during the 4th century. Jerome is best known as the translator of the Bible into Latin. A previous version (now called the Old Latin) existed, but Jerome's version far surpassed it in scholarship and in literary quality. Jerome was well versed in classical Latin (as well as Greek and Hebrew), but deliberately translated the Bible into the style of Latin that was actually spoken and written by the majority of persons in his own time. This kind of Latin is known as Vulgate Latin (meaning the Latin of the common people), and accordingly Jerome's translation is called the Vulgate. Cicero – Lived during the 1st century BC. Roman politician, philosopher & translator. Theory ‘‘word-for-word’’ & ‘‘sense-for-sen...

Kommunikatsioonimudel

In the 802.11 specification, the physical layer monitors the energy level on the radio frequency to determine whether or not another station is transmitting and provides this carrier sensing information to the MAC protocol. If the channel is sensed idle for an amount of time equal to or greater than the Distributed Inter Frame Space (DIFS), a station is then allowed to transmit. As with any random access protocol, this frame will be successfully received at the destination station if no other station's transmission has interfered with the frame's transmission. When a receiving station has correctly received a frame for which it was the addressed recipient, it waits a short period of time (the Short Inter Frame Spacing - SIFS) and sends an acknowledgment frame back to the sender. We will see shortly that this explicit acknowledgment is needed because,
