Merde Actually
By Stephen Clarke
“Merde Actually” is written by Stephen Clarke, who is a British journalist and a novelist living in Paris . When he first arrived in Paris, he experienced a cultural shock and got inspired by it. He started to keep a diary of his experiences and decided to publish it as a novel when the Anglo- French relationships were at their worst during the Iraq War spring 2003. Therefore his novels (he has written three in this series) have become enormously popular all around the world, especially because they are partly true. Stephen Clarke himself still lives in Paris with his French girlfriend. This novel is considered to be seriously funny and a comedy with a message . “Merde Actually” has one main character whose name is Paul West , but there are also many other significant characters , that come from the previous book “A Year in the Merde”. I can say that it would be better to read the first book of this series first, other wise some jokes and thoughts might stay incomprehensible.
This novel starts with a description of how and where Paul West is going with his girlfriend Florence . As known , in France , the summer holidays are quite long for working class; therefore a lot can be done . Anyway, Paul and Florence start their holiday by going to stay in Florence’s mother ’s country cottage, which is in Corrèze, almost exactly in the centre of France. Their journey to there is not quite without interruptions. In France, people do not really care about road regulations and they do not recognise the rule of the right hand. Anyway, they have to pass a roundabout and of course get into a car accident , where they are not to blame. But one thing has to be known about the French; it is that when one is not harsh with them , they will play their cards the way that the innocent one will be blamed. This happens to Paul too. Finally they still manage to reach to their destination. It comes out that Florence’s mother is not a satisfied and a happy woman, but a bit bizarre. In Paul’s eyes , she is a sex maniac, who is persistent to seduce her daughter ’s boyfriend.
Soon Paul gets fed up and wishes to leave. Their next destination is Florence’s father ’s country house, which is on Ré, a thirty -kilometre ribbon of an island off France’s west coast. There they sunbathe, swim , enjoy the nature . Paul also explores the local way of living and ends up in a bar with Florence’s father, who gets himself and Paul drunk. During the time on Ré and also in Correzè, Paul keeps in touch with his previous girlfriend Alexa. They call each other and exchange e-mails. Paul still has butterflies in his stomach when he hears from her. Meanwhile , the relationship between him and Florence and him and her father is getting worse . The problem is that Paul is constantly worried about his tea- room that he gets built in Paris by Florence’s ex-boyfriend Nicolas. Florence does not seem to care, whether things are moving or not and that upsets Paul. And finally Paul manages to anger Florence’s father.
Paul decides it is better for him to return to Paris. He visits his café and sees that nothing has been done there. He decides to fire Nicolas and take the matters into his own hands . Soon he understands that he does not want to be with Florence, because of her lack of interest in him, in their relationship and in his work . He moves out of her apartment . Despite of this, he manages to open his tea-room “My Tea is Rich ” and runs a successful business. During this time he obviously has many other complicated relationships with other French women and therefore makes his life even more complicated. Plus the ghosts from the past come haunting again and his feelings towards Alexa become stronger by the day. Everything would be less complicated if Alexa had not found herself a new boyfriend and had not moved to England.
Basically the last stage of this book concentrates on his pursuit of happiness . He makes unthinkable efforts and stupidities to prove Alexa that he loves her and that he wants to be with her. He even goes back to England, but discovers that he has become more of a Frenchman than an Englishman and he starts to dislike English manners. “Merde Actually” ends with him going alone to a Christmas holiday in France, since Alexa stands him up, or that is what he thinks. Finally they still meet, because Alexa just runs late , like all the French do. It seems like a happy ending , but actually the trouble just begins , with Paul’s bag and passport gone with the train .
For me, it was an easy book to read, since it was really fascinating. Stephen Clarke writes in a way that people want to read: the style is close to every-day life speech and he really does understand how things are. In all the chapters there is a hidden message and some of the ideas are really useful for real life usage . I guess the whole message of this book is that one should always pursue its hopes and dreams and never give up. Since actually one has nothing to lose, but tons to win. Life is like a rollercoaster, with its ups and downs, but if there were not any downfalls then people would not notice the luck and happiness in their lives. In conclusion I can honestly say that I liked this book a lot. I have also read the first part, which was as good as this one, but in the end I can say that they complement each other. I enjoyed reading it and there was not a time when I wished that it would be over already . I would recommend this novel to everybody who is interested in cultural communication and real life problems, which get clever solutions.

Stiva's habits are described in detail. To avoid arguing with Dolly about an affair he had with another woman, Stiva tries to distract himself by plunging into his work. He reads a liberal newspaper and comes off as a bit of a rogue (Tolstoy himself was a conservative). Stiva follows the liberal tradition, which denounces religion and marriage as cheap institutions. When a widow drops by to ask Stiva's help with a petition she's submitting to the government, Stiva helps her--not because he actually cares about the woman or her cause, but because he wants her to think well of him. We find out about Stiva's history: he was lazy in school but nevertheless used his connections to achieve a distinguished government career. Stiva represents the worst aspects of the social world, since he hasn't earned his way through life. On his way out of the house, Stiva almost forgets to apologize to Dolly. When he does so, she becomes furious with him, humiliated by his pity. She

it ends. This anxiety arises from his belief that the war will have ruined his generation, will have so eviscerated his and his friends' minds that they will always be "bewildered." Against such depressing expectations, Paul is relieved by his death: "his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come." The war becomes not merely a traumatic experience or a hardship to be endured but something that actually transforms the essence of human existence into irrevocable, endless suffering. The war destroys Paul long before it kills him. Kantorek Though he is not central to the novel's plot, Kantorek is an important figure as a focus of Remarque's bitter critique of the ideals of patriotism and nationalism that drove nations into the catastrophe of World War I. Kantorek, the teacher who filled his students' heads with passionate rhetoric about duty and glory, serves as a punching bag as Remarque argues

"Ender's game"

Ender says will sting without provocation, the setting is peaceful, allowing Ender the mental recovery and relaxation he needs. Next comes the shuttle ride to Eros, where Command School is located, the trip is long and Ender and Graff begin to feel enclosed and tired of the space. Eros, built by the buggers, is not much better: the low ceilings, narrow passages, downward-sloping floor and lower gravity. The focus of activity here is in the simulation rooms, where, it turns out, Ender is actually commanding the real fleets. When he leaves Eros, it is not for Earth, but for the first human colony, on a former bugger world, which will become known as Ender's World. While looking for a location for another group of colonists, Ender discovers a landscape mimicking that in the fantasy game he played at Battle School. The setting here is used by the buggers to communicate with Ender and lead him to the discovery of their hive queen. Main Characters Ender

Philip Larkin poetry analysis

I think that his poems are interesting. They reveal much about Larkin's life and about the social issues in the 20th century. Larkin is also considered to be one of the greatest English poets in the 20th century. I think that Larkin was quite interested in politics. For example his poem ´´Talking in Bed´´ begins with the lines /Talking in bed ought to be easiest, Lying together there goes back so far/. At first it gives the reader an idea that he is talking about two lovers, but actually he is talking about England and USA. He describes the darkness that is creeping up. In my opinion he is talking about USA, which is beginning to creep up on England or on Europe. And because of that England is becoming a less dominant and more isolated place. He is saying that intimacy is dying and that may represent the globalization. Another political poem I really enjoyed is ´´Homage To a Government´´. Larkin says that next year they are going to

He holds on to the romantic prewar ideals of love and fair play, yet, against the backdrop of the devastating legacy of World War I, these values seem tragically absurd. As a Jew and a nonveteran, Cohn is a convenient target for the cruel and petty antagonism of Jake and his friends. Read an in-depth analysis of Robert Cohn. Bill Gorton - Like Jake, a heavy-drinking war veteran, though not an expatriate. Bill uses humor to deal with the emotional and psychological fallout of World War I. He and Jake, as American veterans, share a strong bond, and their friendship is one of the few genuine emotional connections in the novel. However, Bill is not immune to the petty cruelty that characterizes Jake and Jake's circle of friends. Mike Campbell - A constantly drunk, bankrupt Scottish war veteran. Mike has a terrible temper, which most often manifests itself during his extremely frequent bouts of drunkenness. He has a great d
