Connecting Ideas Logically and Effectively

UNIT 6 Connecting Ideas Logically and Effectively The aim of the section is to assist you to produce an effective topic outline: a skeleton of your document. If this stage of the production process is done properly all you really need are the language control techniques to connect your ideas logically and effectively. If you have a well documented list of techniques to connect your ideas effectively the writing process is less formidable. You will want to know how to join similarities, compare and contrast certain facts, introduce the next topic, offer a supporting idea, or refer to previously presented facts. You will also need to know how to present different shades of argument to produce logically a recommendation you wish to make. This requires an ability to emphasise certain facts and 'bury' others. However, all facts need to be linked to give a logical flow.

Speech: Ideas are our greatest weapons

Some people might find it hard to believe, but even the most common things- like chairs, walls, even a pack of bread has been an idea once. Someone had probably felt that his or her legs got tired and sitting on floor might not be so comfortable, so one chose to invent a chair. Think of it- even floor, where people used to sit before chairs were invented is certainly someone's idea and invention. Isn't it strange to think like that? You are probably wondering that why are those ideas then so important? It's a good question and there is no way that it could have that one and only answer. I think that all of you have come across some contests, where good ideas are being searched. For example, several months ago I noticed a contest made by very well-known technology company that was searching for new ideas to implement, which prize pool was up to 2000€. It sounds like a big amount of cash, doesn't it ? In

The future seems dark. - 2012

The future seems dark. There have been plenty of ideas discussed about what will happen in 2012. But how do we know which to trust? There's very little legitimate scientific evidence out there to tell us unequivocally what the truth is, so what do we really know? The most important thing to remember when looking into all the theories going around is this: No one knows. Not the Mayan experts, not the conspiracy theorists, not the sceptics. Recently sceptics have used comments from modern day Mayans themselves that

1984 book conclusion

The thought police is based on the NKVD and the tortures of the Minstry of Love evoke the procedures used by the NKVD. Actually the statement „2+2=5“ that Winston had to beliece was a communist party slogan from the second five-year plan, in which they wanted to full five-year plan in four years. In my opinion it goeds together with nowadays- that people want to get more and faster, they do not have any patience and expect everything to happen very fast. In my opinion there were 3 main ideas which go very well together with nowadays society ideas, problems and fears. George Orwell wanted to show dangers of totalitarianism, but nowadays if a country limits people´s freedom- it is also dangerous like putting a ban on media or internet. Also controlling information and history- country can rule people and who has never seen truth can´t see anything differently, if people hear lies all the time they start having doubts and problems in their lives. What is the main question that Descartes is trying to answer? How can I be certain [sure] that I am in the truth? 4. Which are precepts of Descartes' method? Only accept what is self-evident. Analysis. Synthesis. Enumeration. 5. Descartes will only accept one specific kind of ideas: which and why? He will only accept clear and distinct ideas that are indubitable. Because the complex ideas could then be constructed using the simple ideas. 6. How does Descartes call his method and why is it not skeptical? Methodic doubt. Because the goal of this doubt is not to be skeptical but to prove that some things can not be doubted. 7. “I think, therefore I am”. What does this phrase means? If I think, I cannot doubt my own existence. 8

Teamwork: the pros and cons

In modern world there are two types of people. Those who like to work in teams and those who like to work alone.I'm more likely to work in a team than alone. There are many good sides in teamwork, like people can pool their skills together and than it's generally more productive but when work individually person has he is own ideas. No idea is a bad idea when person is working alone. It's an amazing feeling when person can create his owns ideas or do whatever his heart desires. There is only one, with own ideas and trust in his own decision making. Of course, person will be fully responsible for the outcome. The common goal in teamwork is good for morale and fosters team spirit but in individual work person can't get help from others or be appreciated by others for ideas. Also collaboration and mutual feedback are fulfilling and make people feel more valued

ideas, and to the orderly arrangement of them, is an experience that is not educative. He affirms the idea that the principle of organization is not foreign to experience, but rather they go together. Otherwise, experience would become so scattered, it would seem chaotic (p. 82). In order for experiences to be educational, they must extend into an expanding world of subject matter consisting of facts, information, and ideas. The educator must view teaching and learning as a continuous process of reconstructing experience. This occurs only when the educator can look to the future with the perspective of viewing each present experience as a moving force that influences future experiences (Dewey, 1938, p. 87). The challenges for the educator are in the formation of ideas, putting those ideas into action, observing the conditions that result, and in organizing facts and ideas for future use (Dewey, p. 88).

The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Price of Everlasting Youth Everlasting youth is something that people value most when they are already older. But Dorian captured the ideal moment which he wanted to be eternal. His decision was influenced by Harry's ideas and the portrait of him where he saw how beautiful he was. Dorian wished that he could remain young forever and his portrait would get older. Harry was a friend of Basil's, the artist who painted Dorian's picture, and he had quite peculiar ideas of life. He told Dorian that youth is the most relevant in life and that everyone should enjoy it. Basil knew that Harry wouldn't be good influence for young boy, but he wasn't able to prevent their encounter.

and many other things with the person so he or she could become a good friend. But maybe one of the most important things is to have something in common. When I think about my best friends then I can really see how much we have in common. We very often think the same about life, things and people. We share very many viewpoints and agree on so many things. There is always something to talk about and fun never ends. It's sometimes great to have somebody who shares your ideas. Then you know that you are not alone and you can complain to someone who really understands. On the other hand, I can also see, when looking at my friendships, that having the same ideas and thoughts can sometimes be disturbing and boring. I like to be different. I like to have my own thoughts and understandings. It can be very boring do have someone who constantly agrees on everything I say or do. It's good to have disputes and different viewpoints. better when you already have some imagination of the job. In addition, organizations give new skills and knowledge. Secondly, it connects people with same interests, which leads to a more active social life. It seems that right connections are even more important, when it comes to finding a job, than education. Another relevant point is that nowadays you have to know how to work in a group and student organizations are excellent places to practise it. It must also be noted that good ideas come more easily in a group. In addition, it is easier to make these ideas come alive with lots of people than alone. It is the group energy, all working for the same goal that gives students will to work more. It is said that students have already too many responsibilities and adding the organizations in daily life becomes too much to take. On the one hand, being involved in an organization takes up some precious time, but on the other hand it teaches students how to manage their time

It might have been a long time ago when it was written, but I haven't heard of a similar idea such as the starting point of the events. In the beginning Dorian was a young undamaged simple boy and I think that Basil was right to have the wish to prevent Dorian meeting Harry. When Dorian hears the ideas that Harry has for life of pleasure, beauty and youth, he adopts them immediately. As he sees his portrait, Dorian becomes aware of his beauty and says the fateful wish that if only he could remain young and the portrait would become old. The first sign that his wish had become true is seen when Dorian is very heartless and rude to Sibyl Vane, an actress to whom he wanted to marry. When young Dorian discovers

My ideal school

My ideal school would be communication-based, blending aspects of social work, conflict resolution, team building, and traditional learning. Classes would be limited to fifteen students, a size small enough to allow individual attention but large enough to furnish the feeling of belonging to a group. Creative projects would be the cornerstone of the curriculum, incorporating all the life skills that make this method of education unique. The class would be presented with a number of ideas at the beginning of each project, and would also have the option of coming up with their own idea. Some examples are raising money to donate to a charity, creating an anthology of short stories to be bound and published, starting a website, writing and recording an original song, and patenting a new idea. Because of the amount of coordination required for each project, both successes and failures would inevitably spring up along the way, giving the children a meaningful experience

They were stuck on their old manners and ideas how the British Monarchy should act. Princess Diana went along very easily with new ideas and manners. As I understood for Queen Elizabeth II was the title queen with a very important meaning, but for Princess Diana the title princess was just a title. Writing and Me - An Essay

sun lightly kiss my face and just write. About anything. And it would come naturally. Except it did not. Do you know the feeling after you wake up from a really good dream? When you are desperately clinging to it, trying to remember everything, but it all just floats away as if you were trying to catch smoke with your bare hands? That is what writing feels like to me. I used to think that I had so much to say, so many ideas to share, so much inside of me that just had to be let out or otherwise I would explode. I knew what I wanted to say, it was all there in my head, but when it came to putting it down on paper, I could not find the right words to express myself. Every time I picked up a pen or took out a sheet of paper, everything escaped my mind. As I searched for the perfect words, everything I was trying to say slipped away from me

provided for us by materialistic matter in a philosophical sense. Emotions and relationships can also be explained through materialistic world of view, for example love means to value flowers, chocolate and other nice or expensive things. Idealism on the contrary is a metaphysical doctrine that explains the existence of something greater than us or that everything around is created by a spirit of some sort. We can not comprehend these higher powers. It affirms and prioritizes ideals or ideas and that reality is mental. Spirit is the essence of being and human. Although the physical human body or life among us can deteriorate, the spirit of it is infinite and by understanding that we can be united with the universe or even comprehend it’s existence. Both of these philosophical schools have truth in them in my eyes. I can’t fully state that i belong to either one of them, but i can comprehend and understand the ideas behind those ideas

Word processing versus handwriring hinne 5

The task in front of me becomes more daunting and frustrating. I feel like when I write on the computer my words are chosen to simply fill a page. Handwriting provides an escape from the looming word counts and page numbers. We discussed in class how writing by hand forces you to think out your sentences and chose your words more carefully. I agree that while typing we simply type whatever comes to mind and completely. This creates less don't think through our ideas effective points and poorer results. A main problem I notice when I write essays on my laptop, is all of the distractions that come along with using the computer. I have music and internet at my fingertips and this can dramatically change the quality of writing. With the ability to distract yourself with entertainment it is far too easy to ignore your assignment and encourage writers block. The screen also is tiring to look at and gives me a headache after a while

Tolerance and Diversity essay

Tolerance and Diversity Janne Susi In today's world, the coexistence of different cultures is one of the most vital developments. Furthermore, the principles of tolerance and peaceful coexistence of different nations have often been underlined by the representatives of the European Union. The same ideas have lately been spreading in the Baltic countries. So, what are the main dangers to the tolerance and friendly coexistence in these countries? There are several phenomena which counteract the successful coexistence and integration of people from different cultural backgrounds. First and foremost, both coexistence and integration require a high level of tolerance from all those involved. Here, the major obstacle is often xenophobia which may be caused by a wide range of factors.

The Silence And Awe Of Arvo Pärt

The Silence And Awe Of Arvo Pärt Some time ago, when I was randomly browsing the internet, I found an article about Arvo Pärt attending a festival in New York. The article seemed interesting but I didn't exactly read it, because Arvo Pärt has always been a composer I respect and know of, but I haven't directly listened to his music or been to any of his concerts so it didn't strike my interest, but on the bottom of the same page was a review where a journalist described his music very vividly and colorfully. It was also very inspiring and so I started to search for more. The silence and awe of Arvo Pärt is an article written by Tom Huizenga. There he talks about Pärt's childhood and how he found his current style. The most important was what inspires him and they also had an interview: In the article he says that Pärt is a major composer and he was little nervous to meet him. Although the 78-year-old musician us...

Kuidas kirjutada esseed

The Essay Writing Manual Brain Storming The process of writing the application essay can be broken into five very basic parts: Brainstorming Selecting the essay topic Writing the essay Revising the essay Coming up with the final draft 1. BRAINSTORMING: Brainstorming is the process of coming up with ideas spontaneously from free flowing writing or talking. To brainstorm, you can simply sit down with a pen and jot down every idea that comes into your head. Another approach is to simply start writing and see where you end up. Record as much information as you can recall, such as schools attended, courses taken, jobs held, research projects undertaken. Work on taking yourself deeper into the introspection process by tackling more specific topics. Here are some questions you might want to consider:

Letter

501 S Sapodilla Ave West Palm Beach FL 33401 Dear Sir/Madam, 14 May 2012 I am writing to ask you more about your school in America because I would like to become an exchange student there for a year. I am a 17-year-old girl from Estonia, cheerful, kind and hard-working. I love literature and arts; however, learning new ideas and cultures has always been my secret passion. There are many places I have been to and even more yet awaiting to be explored. I would like to know more about the location of your school, strengths and major subjects. Are there any accommodation possibilities such as staying with host families? It would be interesting to try it at least once in a lifetime. And one more question about the fees is there any extra pay for studies, books, uniform, etc? I look forward to your letter. Sincerely,

Emily Dickinson

A door just opened Emily Dickinson A door just opened on a street-- I, lost, was passing by-- An instant's width of warmth disclosed And wealth, and company. The door as sudden shut, and I, I, lost, was passing by,-- Lost doubly, but by contrast most, Enlightening misery. Emily Dickinson Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, to a successful family with strong community ties, she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. Emily Dickinson, regarded as one of America's greatest poets, is also well known for her unusual life of self imposed social seclusion. Living a life of simplicity and seclusion, she yet wrote poetry of great power; questioning the nature of immortality and death, with at times an almost mantric quality. Her different lifestyle created an aura; often romanticised, and frequently a source of interest and specula...

The Noble Savage in the 20th Century Fiction

A large part of pop culture consists of stories which have the ability to change a person his take on life, taste in music and books, how to treat other people etc. It may seem simple and pointless but all the devoted fans, all the trekkies, warsies, twihards, potterheads and ringers (there are many more, with crazier names) prove us that stories can become more than entertainment. Of course, a story can change people without making them go to all sorts of conventions. Even the small ideas make a change. The main part in a story, the one that seemingly makes the impact, who guides the consumer through its change, is the protagonist. The development in the reader or the watcher happens through the transformation of the hero. Usually the main character starts off as an outcast, somebody the society sees as unimportant or too strange. Then something happens that sends the hero on an adventure. The breaking point on his road is meeting a teacher an encounter

Informal letter

I'm kind a sure that it wont be that relaxing at all, because I've thought about some money collecting. So my plans are that the first 2 months I'll mostly spend working. And for the last month I've made some plans where you fit into perfectly. I have a thought on my mind to go to England and spend there a nice weekend with some friends. Wouldn't that be great? I'm looking forward to your letter and the opinion what you think about my ideas. Write back as soon as possible. Love, Katrin
