HOW TO WRITE AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
An argumentative essay is a formal , impersonal piece of writing in which the writer is either expected to give a balanced consideration of a particular topic, or to state their own opinion clearly and then support it by giving reasons.
An essay should begin with an introduction in which some background information is given about the problem that is going to be discussed. The angle from which the problem is going to be looked upon in the essay is also stated . In longer essays these are in different paragraphs, in shorter ones they can be in one paragraph.
The body of the essay usually consists of several paragraphs, the number of which depends on the length of the essay. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence. The following sentences should enlarge on the theme , give examples , etc. If it is an essay discussing the advantages and disadvantages of something , the advantages should be grouped together and so should be the disadvantages. One paragraph should only talk about one thing , aspect, etc. If a new thought begins, a new paragraph should be started , too. In essays that express the writer’s opinion mainly, one paragraph (usually the last one before the conclusion ) should be reserved for the opposing viewpoint.
When writing an essay, information should not be unnecessarily repeated. The same is true for grammatical patterns and vocabulary : different grammatical patterns and words make the essay more interesting and easily readable. As an essay is a formal piece of writing, contractions (e.g. isn’t, aren ’t, etc.) are not acceptable because they are not formal enough. S/he can be used instead of the cumbersome “he or she” to save space when having in mind a person of either sex, or the also politically correct “they” for the singular . There should be neither slang forms nor colloquialisms.
It is important to be as precise and to the point as possible. Hinting at things is not a good idea because essays are not meant to be read by friends who know the writer’s point of view anyway, but by mere acquaintances or most often even strangers who should also understand everything the writer is trying to say.
As to the sentences, it is stylistically good to have them nicely balanced, some of them longer, some shorter, but not too long or too short. The formality of an essay and unfinished sentences do not go together well. Exclamation marks (!) are considered equal to shouting, which should exclude them from a serious essay. Every single sentence should be full and meaningful in itself but should also follow logically from the sentence before and be a suitable starting point for the next sentence.
An essay should end with a conclusion that briefly takes together what has been said before. If for and against arguments were given earlier, this is the place where the writer can give his own opinion. If the writer feels there are more arguments for than against the topic, it is advisable to give those before the final paragraph to lead the reader to a proper conclusion. If giving support to an opinion throughout the essay, the opinion should be restated here .
There are a lot of linking expressions that are useful for connecting the separate sentences and paragraphs into a logical cohesive text and are considered absolutely necessary in a good essay. The following are some examples of these.
To introduce points : Firstly/To begin with/In the first place; One point in favour of/against is/One advantage of … is/One disadvantage of … is, etc.
To add more points: Secondly/Thirdly/What is more/ Furthermore /both … and/not only … but also/In addition/ Besides /A further advantage of … is/not to mention the fact that, etc.
To make contrasting points or to present the other side of the argument: However/On the other hand/ Although /In spite of/Contrary to what most people believe/As opposed to the above ideas /Some people argue that…, etc.
To conclude: In conclusion/To sum up/All things considered/On balance , etc.
To express opinion: I (strongly) believe/In my opinion/In my view/I think/I feel that/It seems to me that, etc.

In one of them native language was used for explaining. The tape-recording was used. Afterwards the teacher played the recordings and the students had to write on the board what they heard. I enjoyed the clip where the question about student´s feelings, opinions about the lesson and method was asked. Students agreed that it was relaxed environment to study, no pressure. Errors were corrected in non-threatening manner. Students could express their feelings and opinions freely and share their knowledge in the group. All the students were actively involved. The main goals are speaking, active interaction, relaxing learning environment.

If the wrong style is used, the letter will look impolite, silly or odd.
