His first novel, Grimus, a part-science fiction tale, was generally ignored by the public and literary critics. His next novel, Midnight's Children, catapulted him to literary notability. It is regarded by many as one of the great books of the last 100 years. This work won the 1981 Booker Prize and, in 1993 and 2008, was awarded the Best of the Bookers as the best novel to have received the prize during its first 25 and 40 years. Women writer's influence on our society

Women writer's influence on our society Estonian women writer's history doesn't go far back. The reason for that is that people were slaves back then. Even if there were writers, then most weren't famous and they wrote poems and stories more for themselves. Also being a woman and a writer wasn't considered as a decent job for a woman at that time. The stories that we have from that time were given to one another by talking and mostly we don't know who were the authors. Education was also very expensive so only rich people could get it and Estonians, who were just farmers, mostly didn't have money for that. First I am going to talk about Marie Heiberg. She lived 1890-1942. Her first poem collection was ,,Mure-lapse laulud" in translation ,,Problem child's songs"

Writing and Me - An Essay

Writing and Me When I was younger I absolutely loved to read books and desperately yearned to be a writer. The idea of waking up in the morning and not having to go to work appealed to me, I imagined the life of a writer as something relaxed and effortless. If I were a writer I could sleep until noon if I wished to, take my morning coffee to the balcony, light a cigarette, let the sun lightly kiss my face and just write. About anything. And it would come naturally. Except it did not. Do you know the feeling after you wake up from a really good dream? When you are desperately clinging to it, trying to remember everything, but it all just floats away as if you were trying to catch smoke with your bare hands? That is what writing feels like to me. I used

Hoe to write an argumentative essay?

HOW TO WRITE AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY An argumentative essay is a formal, impersonal piece of writing in which the writer is either expected to give a balanced consideration of a particular topic, or to state their own opinion clearly and then support it by giving reasons. An essay should begin with an introduction in which some background information is given about the problem that is going to be discussed. The angle from which the problem is going to be looked upon in the essay is also stated. In longer essays these are in different paragraphs, in shorter ones they can be in one paragraph.

and articles for other magazines, including ''The New Yorker'' Dahl wrote his first story for children, ''The Gremlins'' in 1942, for Walt Disney. The story wasn't terribly successful, so Dahl went back to writing mysterious stories for adult readers. He continued in this vein into the 1950s, producing the best-selling story collection ''Someone Like You '' in 1953 and ''Kiss, Kiss'' in 1959. He also had a successful career as the writer of adult short stories, usually with a dark sense of humour and a surprise ending. Many were originally written for American magazines such as ''Ladies Home Journal'', ''Harper's'', ''Playboy'' and ''The New Yorker.'' Dahl wrote more than 60 short stories and they have appeared in numerous collections. Some only being published in book form after his death. His stories also brought him three Edgar Awards: in 1954, for the collection ''Someone Like You'' and in 1959 for the story "The Landlady"

Something out of nothing

The way I see it, God makes all the rules and you can't really argue with him, because he's God. He can do what he wants, that's just the way it is. In my opinion humans want to feel as powerful as God. It makes us feel better about ourselves, if we can make our own rules from time to time. Let's say, that a musician is writing a song. He makes something out of nothing and he can't help it, he loves the idea of being almighty. Because let's face it, to that song, the writer is God. It is completely up to to the writer to say what's wrong and what's right. He can make up the lyrics and he can compose the melody and noone can tell him, what he should do, or how it should be done. He's making something entirely new out of nothing, so there are no rules and one can only use it's imagination to make it work. On the other hand, many people are just too lazy to make anything new. They just use things that are already there and don't even

Writing in the Business World

Discussion 1 You will probably notice quickly the first two changes that the secretary made. 1 Subject Heading By adding the word deterioration at the beginning of the subject heading, she made it a much more precise and accurate summary of the topic of the report. 2 Organization of Information The way the information in Text 1 was organized was not very logical: The writer told us about the inspections which were made by MCC mechanics before he told us why they were necessary. We therefore miss the point, which the secretary makes clear: the two specific problems de scribed are only examples of a much more general decline in services. Cinema is the most restricitve medium

Cinema is the most restricitve medium The topic of this essay is cinema as the most restrictive medium. I would like to discuss the restrictions of cinema as such – what these are, how do they affect the medium. For example time limit of the films, budget, how it affects writer and director, what kind of choices they have to make, and how the audience come into play. Personally, i don’t consider cinema as a restrictive medium. Cinema’s most restrictive feature is time. Filmmakers must fit very good shots edited into very good storyline into one and a half to three hour movie, usually. The reason being, we get uncomfortable sitting long period of time. If the movies would be longer, we would lose interest and start doing something else

When Michael left school he went into the army, which he also hated. He left as soon as he could and trained to be a teacher. Michael loved teaching, especially poetry, which he discovered through the poems of Ted Hughes. He stopped teaching to become a full-time writer when he started the farm. He writes sitting propped up on the bed, with a thin pen on lined paper which he fills as much as possible as he hates turning over and starting a new page! He hates rewriting stories and he hates making corrections. Favorites among his own books. Favorites among his own books are The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke´s Kingdom, War Horse and Private Peaceful.
