Describe at  least  ONE  idea  that was worth  learning  about in the text. Explain why the
idea was worth learning about in the text as a  whole , using  examples  of  visual  and / or
oral   language   features  to  support  your  ideas

In Slumdog Mil ionaire directed by Danny  Boyle  “Love conquers al ” is an idea worth
learning about. Boyle uses cinematography,  dialogue  & gesture and flashbacks to show
this.
Love conquers al  is an idea worth learning about because you may  come   across  it in
many texts, it’s a  universal  idea and it’s appealing to us as an  audience . Love conquers
al  is the common  theme  in the texts, especial y those which feature young love.  Other
texts  such  as the wel - known  play Romeo and Juliet by Wil iam  Shakespeare , to the
novel   feed  by M.T  Anderson  and  even  music such as Right by my Side by Nicki Minaj
featuring  Chris   Brown  al   include  this common theme of Love conquers al . Love
conquers al  is also a universal theme. It can be used in any generation and any  country
and in  different  kinds of texts as I have listed. We as an audience al  love seeing two
young lovers overcoming any obstacles  fate  throws in their way. This appeals to us as
an audience as it  makes  us believe that if you strive for love,  nothing  can  hold  you  back
from achieving that love.

Jamal and  Latika  are the two young lovers in Slumdog Mil ionaire and the  plot  revolves
around  Jamal’s quest to be with Latika and the obstacles that are thrown in his way. The
first  obstacle  appears  to be the  game  show, but we are quickly shown that it is the
conflict with the  host  Prem that Jamal must win to be united with Latika.
The conflict  between  Prem and Jamal helped me  understand  the main idea of “Love
conquers al ”. It helped me understand this by the use of flashbacks  during  the show.
When Jamal was  asked  a question on the show,  there  was a flashback showing how
Jamal knew the  answer  to the question he was asked. This  gave  the audience an insight
of Jamal’s past,  living  in the slums of India and al  the obstacles he had to overcome. An
example of an obstacle Jamal had to overcome was the murdering of his  mother  by the
Hindu’s. An obstacle Jamal had to overcome for his love of Latika was when he was
forced to leave Latika because of his  brother  Salim. Jamal didn’t go on the show for the
money  but instead went on for Latika to see him  since  he knew she  watched  it. He had
to overcome an obstacle of revisiting his most painful memories from al  the  questions
he was asked. He did this al  for his love of Latika.

Boyle use cinematography to show conflict between Prem, which is one of the obstacles
Jamal, must overcome in the  film . The two main  camera   shots  used to  display  this is the
bird ’s eye view and the mid  shot . One way cinematography added impact was when the
director  uses the mid shot when the host and Jamal  face  each other. This shot brings a
lot of tension because it has  them   both  facing each other and it  looks  like a standoff
because there are two computer panels in between both of them,  making  it  look  like they
are facing each other in a game of  tennis  with the net separating the two opponents.
This shot also  shows  that from a spectator view that they are  ready  to perform.  Another
show they use to add impact is the bird’s eye view shot. They use this  particular  shot
when Jamal and the show host were stil  facing off. Using this shot made you  feel  that
they are in a gladiator type  arena  and they have nowhere to hide, it is just two people
squaring off. This shot gave me as the audience the  impression  that Jamal and Prem
are  rivals  fighting it out. This was Boyle’s  purpose  for the audience to  experience . Using
cinematography adds  further  impact because they reveal  power  balances between
Jamal and the show host.

Another technique used in this film to show conflict between Prem and Jamal was the
use of dialogue and gesture. In this movie an example of the dialogue was by the way
Prem talks and his personality. In this movie Prem is a very arrogant, selfish and an
unfriendly person. When Prem talks in this movie he is constantly  talking  sarcastical y
trying to make Jamal seem like a joke so that he  gets  intimidated. An example is when
Prem cal s Jamal a “chiwal a”. In India there are people who make tea and those people
are cal ed a chiwal a. Chiwal a’s are  lower   class  people in India. When Prem cal s Jamal
a Chiwal a, he is saying he is nothing and has a  poor  paying job. On the other  hand
Jamal is completely different to Prem as Jamal is a very honest, loyal and  friendly
person. When he talks to Prem he tries to just give him short answers like “yes”, “no”
and “I don’t  know ”. This shows the type of person Jamal is as he is a very calm minded
guy who tries to get nothing from  coming  in his way. This also shows that Jamal tries to
not  focus  on Prem but focuses more on trying to get to Lakita. The use of gesture in this
film clearly shows the conflict between Prem and Jamal. The  gestures  that Prem uses
makes it look like he is at home on the set of “Who Wants to Be A Mil ionaire”, especial y
when he leans  back  and casual y swivels  round  to address the audience. Boyle tries to
show the audience that Prem has Jamal at his  fingertips

Flashbacks are used by Boyle to show the back-story of Jamal’s  journey  to get on the
game show. Each time Jamal is asked a question, the audience is shown a flashback to
show how Jamal knows the answer. For  instance , when Jamal is asked who is on the
American one  hundred  dol ar bil , he remembers because it’s recognized by his  blind
friend  when he gives it to him begging in the subway. The flashback shows us how
Jamal managed to  avoid  a  similar  fate. Like al  of the flashbacks it also gives us an
indication of Jamal’s determination and perseverance to overcome al  the obstacles that
fate throws in his  path . Jamal’s  motivation  is his love for Latika, both in the  events  of the
flashbacks and his appearance on the show. The audience knows Jamal doesn’t know
the answer because the climax of the film occurs when Jamal is faced with the  final
question. The flashbacks have shown us what Jamal has had to overcome and the
stage is set for the  triumph  of love.

In  conclusion , the theme of ‘Love conquers al ’ was an idea worth learning about, and
was made  easy  to learn about  through  cinematography, dialogue & gesture, and
flashbacks. Jamal’s  upbringing  and his conflict with Prem made me as the audience
understand the theme of “Love conquering al ”. Boyle was trying to show that love is a
powerful   tool , and can  drive  people to do  anything , like win a game show. As Boyle said,
“What matters to the  characters  in the film is who they love, who they hate, what their
ambitions are, and what their aims are.” Also, the  fact  that Latika had  almost   given  up on
her and Jamal ever being together  again , which is  proven  when she  says  “I thought we
would meet only in  death ,” only for Jamal to look her in the  eyes  and say “This is our
destiny .” This shows how  deep  and passionate their love is. The  effect  that the  ending  of
the film, with Jamal and Latika’s big  kiss , has on the audience is tremendous. It shows
that, no  matter  what the obstacle is, or how  hard  it is, you can pul  through with love.

Film Studies - The Black Dahlia

How genre and narrative makes meaning in ``The Black Dahlia`` When analyzing a film, people understand the movie is much more complicated than it seems. To make a difference, to give a meaning to the film, film-makers have used different visual and thematic features. There are macro features (genre, narrative) as well as micro features (mise en scene, cinematography) and they are linked together in many ways. I have chosen to analyse the closing sequence of ``The Black Dahlia``, directed by Brian de Palma, and I will focus on macro features in this essay. Brian de Palma is well known director, who is focused on noir area through his career (he was once considered as a Hitchcock imitator) ``The Black Dahlia" can be classified as Film Noir. The genre is called Film Noir due to the `serie noir` books, which were publised in France (bethween 1940s and 1950s). These books were translations of American novels by authors like Dashiel

PSYCHOLOGY PART 1: CORE Biological level of analysis Outline principles that define the biological level of analysis. 1) Behavior can be innate, because it is genetically based. Evolution may play a key role in behavior. 2) Animals may be studied as a means of understanding human behavior. 3) There are biological correlates of behavior. Cognitions, emotions and behaviors are products of the anatomy and physiology of our nervous and endocrine system. Explain how principles of the biological level of analysis may be demonstrated in research. 1) Correlational studies: Study by Buss, who hypothesized that across cultures, men will prefer to marry younger women because of greater reproductive capacity and women will place greater value on a potential mate's earning potential to provide survival advantages. This evolutionary hypothesis was tested in 37 cultures by sending out questioners. 2) Twin studies (type of correlational stud
