The Polar Boy
A year ago, I decided to go to the cinema and watch something extraordinary. The choice fell on an Estonian film “The Polar Boy”. It is a touching romantic drama film produced in Estonia that premiered on May 13. 2016 . The film was directed by Anu Aun and the film stars are Roland Laos and Jaanika Arum. This film focuses on the development of the relationship between two young people - Mattias and Hannah . "The Polar Boy" has been supported by Estonian Film Foundation.
Mattias is a young talented photographer living in Tallinn, who has a dream to become a student of the Berlin Arts Academy . He is in his final year of school and has to concetrate on studying before exams, but suddendly he fells in love with a girl. Hannah suffers from a mental disorder called bipolarity. She has periods of depression and periods of elevated mood and it is quite hard for her to control her mood swings. An unnormal amount of alcohol and drugs affects her life and she refuses to face the reality . Trying to win her heart , Mattias feels the need to prove Hannah, that he can be also just as adventorous and unpredictalble as she is. She does not want an ordinary lover . She wants sleepless nights, endless conversations, passion and madness. Mattias does not understand their complicated realationship. Sometimes they are lovers, sometimes friends and sometimes he is just a stranger and means nothing to her. At night they break into a museum , but Mattias does not understad, that Hanna ’s acts are just symptoms of the bipolarity. One day he becames jealous of her and commits a crime that could put him into jail for jears . His only escape is to start faking the bipolarity. He gets into a psychiatric hospital , where he spends most horrible days of his live taking medicines that he actually does not need. The deadline was coming closer and he has to send his documents to the Art Academy, but he can not not leave the hospital. Hannah does it for him.
I liked the film, because it had emotionaaly really stong influece and the viewer was always kept in suspense. What I liked most of all was the actors ’ performances. Jaanika Arum is a skilled actress, her role in this movie was probably the most difficult one, and she did her best , playing with her emotions so skillfully that I often got the impression that I was watching a real person with bipolarity. Some of the film scenes were quite violent and I could feel the trepidation at times when the characters communicated with each other with aggression. Visually, the movie is enjoyable. I liked that the film director used simply and ordinary effects and it was not full of high- tech actions . It can not be said, that the background music and the theme songs were memorable and powerful , but they fitted in well. I think that the love theme between two people is very typical for dramas and films like that are quite predictable. In contrast to other drama films I have seen , “The Polar Boy” is quite unusual and memorable.
The characters were in the kind of situations where they have to decide whether they trust their feelings , risk their lives believing in love or trust some stereotypes and fears they have. Although Mattias and Hannah made a lot of mistakes, they always tried to help each other. The film made me think more about people, who have mental illnesses, because the movie tried to show mental problems as they really are. This movie can deeply affect the public, drawing attention to the needs of mental patients, and increasing tolerance towards psychologically ill people.
In conclusion I can say, that “The Polar Boy” is a powerful movie and it is definitely worth seeing. It is about hope and trust and it shows how kindness and love can cure even the deepest wounds.
