The Fall of the Empire
The fall of the British Empire was caused by World War II for two reasons . Firstly, many nations felt that their sacrifice should be rewarded with independence, for example India. Also, the losses to the Japanese destroyed the myth of the European omnipotence. Secondly, heavily in debt to the United States , the United Kingdom was financially exhausted. This left it almost impossible to defend its wider colonies by force . So the vast markets were opened to American companies and to weaken the UK in general.
No empire has been larger or more diverse than the British Empire. At its apogee in the 1930s , 42 million Britons governed 500 million foreign subjects . Britannia ruled the waves, and a quarter of the earth's surface was coloured red on the map. Where Britain 's writ did not run directly, its influence , sustained by matchless industrial and commercial sinews, was often paramount.
Yet no empire (except for the Russian ) disappeared more swiftly. Within a generation, this mighty structure sank almost without trace leaving behind a scatter of sea- girt dependencies and a ghost of empire -- the Commonwealth . Equally, it can be claimed that Britain bequeathed its former colonies economic foundations, a cultural legacy, a sporting spirit, a legal code and a language more ubiquitous than Latin ever was.
Full of vivid particulars, brief lives , telling anecdotes, comic episodes, symbolic moments and illustrative vignettes, The Decline and Fall of the British Empire evokes remote places as well as distant times .
Such actions were not be tolerated by the Irish and the Irish Americans who, together with North Americans of every race and creed rose against the British Empire in North America and In Ireland . The Irish Republican Army took on the British Empire at its height (1919-21) and British rule collapsed in Ireland as a result of the Irish War of Independence. This sparked Independence movements across the Empire and inspired other nations for Freedom .
World War I
Britain has proven itself on several occasions to be strong and powerful . It has created the reputation by being one of the world’s largest industrial powers. The industrial revolution with WWI was that brought the British Empire to the peak of its expansion. Imperial contributions had strengthened the British war effort, and victory brought to country mandates over new territories, such as Palestine, Iraq, and some territories in Africa .
World War I, known also as the First World War, Great War and War to End All Wars was a global military conflict. Over 15 million people were killed. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. The proximate cause was the 28 June 1914 assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria by some Bosnian- Serb nationalist. The war soon spread worldwide . As the result, it was the end of four major imperial powers. The Treaty of Versailles which was signed at the end of WWI and it is often said that it eventually lead to the beginning of World War II in 1939.
World War II
In late 1938, Britain tried to avoid another world war by signing the Munich Pact . The pact gave Germanypermission “ to invade Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. In March 1939, Britain announced that it would be supportive to Poland when Germany would invade it, but German invaded anyway. Hitler and Stalin had secretely signed an agreement dividing up Poland between the two powers.
On 3rd September 1939, when many people were already preparing for war, Neville Chamberlain , Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at that time, broadcast to the nation , announcing the declaration of war in Germany from Britain. People dig air-raid shelters, or sew blackout curtains.
In May 1940, when Winston Churchill replaced Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister got Britain a more aggressive war-time leader. In 1942 Roosevelt and Churchill agreed to make defeating Germany their first priority. After three more years , in 1945, Germany surrendered unconditionally. As a result for Britain - Great Britain lost over 300,000 fighting men and over 60,000 civilians in WWII .
