To Kill a Mockingbird”

Author

The book was written by Nelle Harper Lee. She was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama . She attended the local Huntington College and later studied law at the University of Alabama. She has won the Pulitzer Prize for that book and many other literary awards. Lee began to write “To Kill a Mockingbird” in the 1950s in New York and published it in 1960.

Setting

The action takes place in Maycomb, Alabama, a town invented by the author. Between 1933–1935. Maycomb is a quiet little town and many people there seem to be narrow -minded.
Main Characters
The main characters are Scout , Atticus and Jem. Scout is a little girl, she is intelligent, thoughtful and brave. She definitely seems boy-like because she isn’t afraid to fight with boys. Scout also has a warm heart , she always has best intentions and worries about the poor . Jem, Scouts brother , is entering puberty and is not so stable as Scout. There is seen clear progress in Jem’s way of thinking during the novel . Atticus is the widowed father of Jem and Scout and also a prominent lawyer . He is respected by everyone. He is also the idol of Scout and Jem because he fights and stands out for justice.
Plot
Scout Finch lives with her brother, Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus, in Alabama town of Maycomb. One summer , Jem and Scout become friends with a boy named Dill, who has come to live in their neighbourhood for the summer. Dill becomes fascinated by the spooky house on their street , the Radley Place. The house is owned by Mr. Nathan Radley, whose brother, Arthur (nicknamed Boo), has lived there for years without daring to go outside .

Scot and Jem find gifts left for them in a knothole of a tree on the Radley property. The next winter, Jem and Scout find more presents in the tree, supposedly left by Boo. Nathan Radley eventually fills the knothole with cement .

Atticus agrees despite Maycomb's racist white community, to defend a black man named Tom Robinson , who has been accused of raping a white woman . Because of Atticus's decision, Jem and Scout are ejected from other children , even when they celebrate Christmas . Calpurnia, the Finches ' black cook , takes them to the local black church , with the warm community.
At the trial Atticus points out clear evidence that the accusers, Mayella Ewell and her father, Bob are lying . Proof marterial are the marks on Mayella's face from her fathers beating. Mayella also claimed in court that Tom was only needed to save his father from dishonour. Despite the remarkable evidence showing Tom's innocence, the all-white jury convicts him. Tom later tries to escape from prison and is shot to death .

Despite the verdict, Bob Ewell feels that Atticus and the judge have made a fool out of him, and he swears revenge. He troubles Tom Robinson's widow , tries to break into the judge's house, and finally attacks Jem and Scout as they walk home from a Halloween party . Boo Radley saves the children and stabbs Ewell during the struggle . Boo carries the wounded Jem back to Atticus's house, where the sheriff, in order to protect Boo, insists that Ewell tripped over a tree root and fell on his own knife . After sitting with Scout for a while , Boo disappears once more into the Radley house.

Quotation

I would like to bring out a quotation that helps to understand the book better. “ Shoot all the blujays you want, if you can’t hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Atticus said that to his children, he gave the instructions for life with this sentence. Mockingbird is a symbol of innocence and therefore it’s a sin to harm innocent people.
My opinion
It was enjoyable and quite serious reading . That book wasn’t only a story of relations between people but also a historical review about what was going on in southern America in the 1930s . I knew that racism was a great issue on those days but now I know more about it. I would recommend “To Kill a Mockingbird” to the people who fancy classics and who like books where you have to think also during reading.

Meena is desperate to fit in with the other children in her neighbourhood while forever feeling like an outsider because she is "different". Eventhough the Punjabi family is well respected by the locals, there are still sutations

She has red curly hair and a turn-up nose. Lena wears spectacles and when spring comes there are plenty of freckles on her cheeks, forehead and nose. But all that doesn't make her plain or ugly. I like Lena because she is well-bred, jolly and kind. She does well at school though she has an unbreakable rule: never to study at night no matter how many written reviews are coming in the morning. She is also fond of reading plain books, and Lena sometimes thinks that one book isn't enough to read, she has two pr three books going at once. My friend has a lot of books at home, and she buys them wherever she goes. She says that the books are of great help any time and they always must be at her hand. Her idea is that it's much easier to have a library of her own comprising lots of books than to try keeping everything in her head. Lena goes in for sports and she is a member of our school basket-ball team. She is terribly quick and strong.

Rudyard Kipling

He used the swastika symbol in both right- and left-facing orientations, and it was in general use at the time. Even before the Nazis came to power, Kipling ordered the engraver to remove it from the printing block so that he should not be thought of as supporting them. Less than one year before his death Kipling gave a speech to The Royal Society of St George on 6 May 1935 warning of the danger Nazi Germany posed to the UK. The Jungle Book is a collection of stories by British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling. The original publications contain illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling. The tales in the book (and also those in The Second Jungle Book which followed in 1895, and which includes five further stories about Mowgli) are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. Part 8 Stiva gets the job he desired so much, and Karenin takes custody of baby Annie. A group of Russian volunteers, including Vronsky, who does not plan to return alive, depart from Russia to fight in the Orthodox Serbian revolt that has broken out against the Turks. Meanwhile, amid the joys and fears of fatherhood, Levin no longer feels he lacks Christian faith; he decides to give his life its own meaning through acts of goodness. Part 1, Chapters 1-6 The first line of the book is one of the most famous in literature: "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." The line leads into a household crisis between a wife and husband, Dolly and Stiva, but also forecasts the issues that will arise throughout the rest of the book, all of them having to do with personal relationships and family structures: especially those of Stiva and Dolly, Anna and Karenin, and Anna and Count Vronsky. Stiva's habits are described in detail. To avoid
