The Pilgrim Fathers

On November 9th, 1620, the `Mayflower' sighted what is now Cape Cod. Despite seeing land, the crew of the `Mayflower' searched for another month to find somewhere to land. Where they eventually landed was called New Plymouth. On December 25th, after finding a place where the `Mayflower' could be safely anchored, the Pilgrim Fathers began to build the first house for common use. By February 1621, 50% of the Pilgrim Fathers had died as a result of the cold weather and the inadequate housing that they had built for themselves. A Native American called Squanto helped those Pilgrim Fathers who survived the harsh winter. He showed them how to sow maize and how to cultivate the crop. Seeds brought from England were of little use in their new environment. By the summer of 1621, the Pilgrim Fathers had built houses for themselves and had gathered up a small harvest. They were well recovered in health

Discuss the representation of the generation of fathers in Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”

Discuss the representation of the generation of fathers in Turgenev's novel "Fathers and Sons" Turgenev always had two tasks before him to depict the body and pressure of time, and to depict the rapidly changing face of cultured Russian society (Freeborn 1960:48). Kluchevsky (1993:40) defined one case of the generation gap in the beginning of the XIX century as "merry cosmopolitan sentimentality of the fathers now transformed in a patriotic grief of their children. The Fathers were Russians, who passionately wanted to become French; the sons were raised as French and passionately wanted to become Russians. Fathers and Sons situates this generational conflict within family relations. In this essay, the ways how Turgenev represents the generation of Fathers in Fathers and Sons is discussed. Fathers and Sons is set in between Russia's defeat in the Crimean War and the Emancipation of the Serfs a socially challenging area

US History: Native Americans and the first settlements

One colonist even took to cannibalism, eating his own wife. The fate of the venture was precarious. Yet still more colonists arrived, and their numbers included women. Despite the introduction of tobacco cultivation, the colony was a failure as a financial venture. The king declared the Virginia Company bankrupt in 1624. Twenty slaves in Virginia Africans brought to Jamestown are the first slaves imported into Britain’s North American colonies Mayflower and Pilgrim Fathers Over a hundred travelers embarked on the voyage of the Mayflower in September 1620. Less than one third were Separatists. The rest were immigrants, adventurers, and speculators. Their voyage took about two months, and the passengers enjoyed a happier experience than most trans- Atlantic trips. Lost at sea, they happened upon a piece of land that would become known as Cape Cod. After surveying the land, they set up camp not too far from Plymouth Rock. They feared venturing further south because

Referaat Spanish California

Baja California became the northwest limit of Spanish colonization, and even there, efforts to settle the area and bring native tribes to Christianity and European ways were halfhearted at best. Not until the Seven Years War (1756-1763) realigned European alliances and their colonial empires did Spain seriously attempt to assert control of Alta California. This was to be done through a combination of military forts (presidios) and mission churches overseen by Franciscan fathers led by Junípero Serra. In 1769, the first parties set north from Baja California, and the line of Spanish settlement along the coast was inaugurated when soldiers and priests established a presidio and mission church at San Diego. By the end of the Spanish colonial period, Alta California had three more presidios (at Monterey, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara) and no fewer than twenty-one missions. In addition to the missions,

Monster Magnet - kontserdiarvustus

Monster Magnet 11. novembril andis Tallinnas, klubis Rock Cafeoma Euroopa tuuri raames kontserdi mainekas stoner-roki bänd Monster Magnet.

Essee, Homelessness

they are also in need of our attention and our support. In the past fifty years the United States has invested more money in helping the homeless people than any other country in the world. The result is that we have more poor people now and more people dependent on the government than we did fifty years ago. The welfare program in our society has failed. The illegitimacy rate of welfare when it first was introduced was one fourth of what it is today. It has driven fathers out of families and caused mothers to become dependent. It has taken away people's dignity and has brought child abuse to our society. Better programs must be created if we want to help homeless people. When people choose to be homeless, they do so because they feel separated from mainstream society. If the dominant social order has no place for a person, they must find another group where they feel needed. The homeless have trouble belonging to a community. Many people

Film review - Billy Elliot

She wants the best dance career for him but this means it has to be considered with Billys parents. Due to the reason Billy has no mother and his father is really oldfashioned, this is the point where it gets difficult. Billys life is about to fall apart again. All the actors of this movie are extraordinarily talented and I got really carried away by this story. Billy was a tough kid and managed to convince his father to trust him and Ms Wilkinson about ballet. They softened even his fathers heart that seemed pretty unconvinceable at the first place. Even though I knew it was just a movie I found myself hoping it's all going to be fine and Billy will find a place to belong. Billys grandmother (Jean Heywood), who he was supposed to taka care of, and his dad Jackie (Gary Lewis) played their parts really touchingly and caused all kinds of different emotions. These images of ballet performed by Billy are some still stuck in my mind.

Women were not allowed to act these days so she dressed up as a boy and went to Shakespeares play auditions and succeeded and that's where the inspiration and love story started to build up. Even though William at first didn't even know that Kent was actually a woman and believed he was nephew of his true love. But found out later accidentally. But their love was forbidden as Viola was about to marry Lord Wessex on his fathers demand. Shakespeare and Viola kept meeting each other secretly followed by many events until the day of Shakespeares performance where the love story got happy ending. The movie has an actual problem that is known for nowadays society as well in Indian regions for example when parents decide who their offsprings marry to simply because they find it suiting or useful(for example when daughter marries to richer man ) Just like in the movie

This inspired many other translators during that period. • What happened in the 19th and 20th century in translation studies? When and who created the term ‘translation studies’? Translation Studies – James S. Holmes - 1972 Ferdinand de Saussure – Lived during the 19th and 20th century. He was a Swiss linguist and a semiotician. He is widely considered one of the fathers of 20th-century linguistics and one of two major fathers (together with Charles Sanders Peirce) of semiotics/semiology. Saussure's most influential work, Course in General Linguistics (Cours de linguistique générale), was published posthumously in 1916 by former students Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye on the basis of notes taken from Saussure's lectures in Geneva. Are young people living in Estonia patriots of their homeland?

fight for Estonia whenever it is necessary. They are ready to give their life for the freedom of their homeland. One the other hand, there are many young Estonians who want to go to study abroad and sometimes they stay there for the rest of their lives. They think that life is better compared to the contitions Estonia has to offer. Also, many young women are convinced that Estonian men are dolts and wusses and think that foreigners make much better husbands for them and better fathers of their children. So, this is the point where young Estonian men should step out for themselves and prove that this belief is not true. There is yet another a well-known saying that describes the attitudes of Estonian young very well: it states that people always want that they have not. Looking from here everything seems to be better in the West education has higher quality and salaries are bigger. That is why youngsters are not satisfied with their lives.

How Are Black Women Portrayed in the Novel?

the black culture of the Caribbean and instills in her a sensitivity to nature and belief in the practices of obeah. She is an outsider because she dresses and speaks differently from the Jamaican blacks. She is a servant, but, unlike the other black servants who live at Coulibri, she remains loyal to the Cosway women. She provides a contrast to Annette because she exercises complete independence from men and distrusts their motives. Although she has three children by three different fathers, Christophine remains unmarried, saying “I thank my God. I keep my money. I don´t give it to no worthless man“. Times and rules change and in consequence, women change too. This novel is the evidence that after the Emancipation Act, black women and ex-slaves started to find and explore themselves and became confident and independent, althought some of them were rude and unrealible.

How far can we go being tolerant?

and many countries have actually made their marriages legal and tolerate them. Also, there have been numerous discussions on whether they should have the right to have, adopt and raise children. To me, it is absolutely unacceptable because this is not normal. They could have good facilities for bringing up children and lots of love to give them, but in my eyes it just is not suitable for a child. How could a child live a normal life having to live with two mothers or two fathers? It may sound very intolerant and rude from my part, but I do not think any child could live like that and have a normal and healthy life afterwards. I try to be tolerant about gays having untraditional partnerships and think of them as fellow humans and let them live their own lives, but allowing them to raise children is over my line. Moreover, I am even more confused and concerned about the gender roles. A couple of days ago

tolerate those things. Speaking of homo sexuals then for me they are same people as I am and I have nothing against them. I only would not like if homo sexuals would start effecting my future child and saying that being homo sexual is better and so on, that i would tolerate, of course. Also I would not like them to have babies because in my point of view children need usual, traditional family, because having for example 2 fathers may cause problems with other children and life would be harder and stranger. Nowadays attitude towars black people is changed but there were times when they were hated and treater evilly. This was not just race problem, it was also affected by cultural differences. Now people are more tolerate but still is seen that some people do not treat them as eqaul. There are so many different religions all over the world. Usually those religions do not

"The Taming of the Shrew" Shakespeare

The action in the induction takes place in the English countryside, first on a heath in front of an alehouse and then in a bedroom in the house of a lord. The action in the play takes place in various locations in Padua, Italy, and at a house in the nearby countryside. The overall tone of the play is light and comic, though the exploration of larger social questions gives much of the comedy a more serious tone. The motifs of this play are disguise, domestication, fathers and their children. Climax There is no single moment of intense action in the play, but rather a long process of development culminating in Katherine's fully changed behaviour. The climax could be seen in the wedding scene in Act III or in Katherine's decision in Act III to agree with Petruchio whatever he says. Conclusion I was a pleasantly surprised after reading this book. At first I was afraid there

Freddie is very resourceful and finds ways to get himself out of many different situations. Whenever he gets into trouble he always tries to make it look better, hoping that others would take it easier then. A good example is how he let his father know that he was engaged. Instead of just saying it out he tried to distract his fathers attention and just say it out in the middle of some other text (Quotes 4,10). Freddie also comes up with all sorts of plans on how to make something work. This is because he has seen a lot of movies and even written some himself. History of the USA.

The United States of America. History. For thousands of years America was unknown to Europe. There lived only the native people, who had come from Siberia many thousand years ago by a land bridge. They had spread over the country, varying enormously from nomadic food gatherers to fishing societies. Then the Vikings visited Canada around AD 1000, but they did not stay. In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered America while trying to reach India. He named the native people Indians, because he though he had reached India.
