based on majority rule of the townsmen. This independent attitude set up a tradition of self-rule that would later lead to town meetings and elected legislatures in New England. Without good harbors or extensive tracts of fertile land, however, Plymouth became a colony of subsistence farming on small private holdings once the original communal labor system was ended in 1623. Puritan Colony in Plymouth, New England; Puritan ethics and ideology The four main convictions of Puritanism were that personal salvation was completely dependent upon God, that the Bible was the final authority and guide to good Christian life, that the church was to be organized from the scripture and that society was a single, unified entity. This is the Puritan Ethic: Strict self-discipline and devotion to God and church, accompanied by contempt for sinful pleasures and luxuries.

War on terror

The phrase War on Terror was first used by former US President George W. Bush and other high-ranking US officials to denote a global military, political, legal and ideological struggle against organizations designated as terrorist and regimes that were accused of having a connection to them or providing them with support or were perceived, or presented as posing a threat to the US and its allies in general. It was typically used with a particular focus on militant Islamists and al-Qaeda. The ideology of violent extremists has been discussed frequently since the tragic events of Septenber 11, 2001. It is clear thet an ideology of Islamist or Islamic political opposition and radicalism has been key to understanding various events and movements that go back even further, to the Islamic Revolution in Iran, for example. The "war on terror" has created a culture of fear in America. The Bush administration's elevation of these three words into a national mantra since the

Gay Families

Gay marriages are more for that people would accept them and get more used with them. Marriage makes them more equal with straight people and more rights. This helps them adopting children too. It shows, that two people have a great bound and they're able to adobt and raise a child. They may be good parents, but it's going to be a hard life for that child because of his gay parents. And maybe parents would even effect child sexual orientation. Surrounding ideology tells us what is beautiful, wrong, good and so on. So when childs parents are gays, maybe it can effect child too and make him gay. In my opinion gays are good average people, but I don't support their marriages and child adopting, because gay men spread AIDS. If they would be normal people in our society and everyone would accept them, then spreading AIDS can increase. However women can be homosexual by not spreading the AIDS, but if women would be accepted as lesbians, then

At least, this is how it seemed to me. This sermon can be seen as a gateway to the Puritan society’s attitude and mindset as it is one of the most classical examples of the Puritan era literature. Although John Winthrop was the leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was filled with corrupted chiefs, he vigorously emphasizes in his writings the unity of community, love of others and morals of equality.

Artiklis ,,Ideology, Identity, and Intercultural Communication: An Analysis of Differing Academic Conceptions of Cultural Identity" (2007) on samuti räägitud murest algupärase kultuuri identiteedi püsimise pärast. Young Yun Kim rõhutab, et kultuuridevahelise identiteedi arenemisega kaasnevad ka kaotused ning, et pikaaegne identiteedi evolutsioon assimilatsiooni suunas viib lõpuks oma algupärase identiteedi hülgamisele või sellest mööda vaatamisele.

The Rise and Demise of the New Public Management Wolfgang Drechsler (University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia) © Copyright: Wolfgang Drechsler 2005 Within the public sphere, the most important reform movement of the last quarter of a century has been the New Public Management (NPM). It is of particular interest in the post-autistic economics (pae) context because NPM largely rests on the same ideology and epistemology as standard textbook economics (STE) is based (for my take on this, see Drechsler 2000), and it has had, and still has, similar results. Already more on the defensive within public administration (PA) than STE is within economics, NPM also shows that such major paradigm shifts in theory and policy may actually happen. In addition, it occasionally appears that pae-oriented scholars have overlooked the fact that some features in public management reform, state

differences in the SL were levelled out into the standard language variety in English. A similar phenomenon in Estonia could be the use of German in official correspondence and writing in earlier centuries. However, as time has gone by, such notions of an accepted class related norm in languages has become subject of criticism. People are considered more equal and thus no language variety can be considered better than another. Sometimes ideology may also come into play with regard to the language of different social classes. For instance, in the target culture, the ruling ideology might not permit the use of any other language variety in literature than the standard dialect. The questions regarding this topic have also been touched upon earlier in the lessons: how is one to translate the language of someone of the lower classes in England into Estonian? Since we don’t have social classes,

Although Syria is predominantly Sunni Muslim, its ruling family is Alawite, a Shiite sect. -At the same time, they are odd political bedfellows. Syria’s Baa’thist ideology is strictly secular and socialist. Iran’s ideology is rigidly religious and, in principle, opposed to atheist communism and its offshoots. To consider Locke's theory of limited government in a contemporary setting, it can be definitely accepted that there is a larger electorate within the United Kingdom, for example. At the same time it can be argued that there is little to differentiate between the mainstream political parties as they have all adopted neo-liberal ideology to a greater or lesser extent. According to the journalist and film maker John Pilger (2010) This is not to say that parliamentary politics is meaningless. It has one meaning now; the replacement of democracy with a business plan for every human activity, every dream, every decency, every hope, every child born... Discuss the representation of the generation of fathers in Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”

. e destruction of patriarchal and monarchical illusion Religion allied with feudalism, odd aristocratic sentimentality, Bucolic life. 3 The love-story between the peasant and the landlord symbolises an underlying problem of the society on the eve of Emancipation in 1861 (the serfs were emancipated by royal decree in 1861, novel set in 1959). Such a relationship between landowner and peasant girl takes the reader further into ideology, calling to mind the social scene in Russia on the eve of Emancipation. Some (contemporary) critics found this illegal affair as proof of the weak morals of the gentry despite their high ideals and ideologies of class. As Nikolai is initially ashamed of his affair and illegitimate son, offering to hide Fenichka while Bazarovs stays, he later transforms and decides to marry her. The wedding between these two suggests Turgenev's optimism for Russia's future. (Jahn, 1977)

The flag of the United States is one of the nation's most widely recognized symbols. Within the U.S. it is frequently displayed, not only on public buildings, but on private residences. It is also used as a motif on decals for car windows, and clothing ornaments such as badges and lapel pins. Throughout the world it is used in public discourse to refer to the U.S., not only as a nation, state, government, and set of policies, but also as an ideology and set of ideals. The Statue of Liberty is a huge sculpture that is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. This monument was a gift to the USA from the people of France in recognition of the French-American alliance during the American Revolution. The formal name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World." It pictures a woman who has escaping the chains of tyranny. Liberty's right hand holds a torch that is a symbol of liberty.

Multiculturalism policy was officially adopted by the Canadian government during the 1970s and 1980s. The Canadian federal government has been described as the instigator of multiculturalism as an ideology because of its public emphasis on the social importance of immigration. The 1960s Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism is often referred to as the origin of modern political awareness of multiculturalism. Canadians have used the term "multiculturalism" both descriptively (as a sociological fact) and prescriptively (as a political ideology). Strategies of creating a dominant party – the case of UR

Many scholars have argued that the most popular policy position typically centrist attract the parties with respect to the voter's preferences (Greene 2008: 17). Therefore, the dominant party must give up its former positions and re-locate itself to appeal to the widest possible area of voters. United Russia has successfully followed these prescriptions. Very soon after the establishment of the party, United Russia (called Unity Block in 1999) insisted that it eschewed ideology, at least no other than the support for the current president, as the leader of the party, Sergei Shoigu declared: ,,We do not bind ourselves to any narrow ideological direction. We are not ,,centrists", ,,rightists", or ,,leftists". We are a party of consolidation of all healthy forces in society, free of ideological bias" (Colton and McFault 2003: 57-58). Assumedly, in this context, "healthy forces" referred to the support for Putin and his government.

I’ve got a base here in Thailand but I’m always back and forth, 17 years on the road. Maybe travelled about 43 countries. I think once you get used to this lifestyle, it becomes part of who you are. This perspective illustrates the actor-level intersection between self-concept and lifestyle (Cohen, 2011), wherein patterns of consumption may ‘give material form to a particular narrative of self-identity’ (Giddens, 1991, p. 81). Ideology and Identity Whilst it is well-established that backpackers returning home often mobilise narratives of self-transformation on the road (Noy, 2004), lifestyle travellers are subject to years of exposure to varied cultural praxes and backpacker subculture, which may manifest in extreme pressure on their socio-cultural identities. One possible outcome of sustained, diverse cultural interaction is a cosmopolitan disposition (in contrast to parochialism), in which it is suggested

Notice interconnections. 88. Be clear about what you want. Be responsible. Be flexible. Be patient. Be cooperative. 89. Post-modernism is an ideology masquerading as skepticism. 90. Post-modernists defend themselves against their critics by making their arguments so convoluted and ambiguous that nobody can follow them. 91. Science is imperfect, but post-modernism brings nothing constructive to the party. In fact, it prides itself on "deconstruction," i.e., trivializing everything but itself by labeling it as arbitrary and subjective. 92. New Age is old hat. 93. Philip Larkin’s Poetry: Themes, Form, Style, Imagery and Symbolism

Although I will keep references to Larkin’s life in this study to a minimum, I am not suggesting that the biography must by definition be outside the scope of Larkin criticism. Discussing Larkin’s life is justifiable, since it helps us understand his poems, although in many cases it has also proven to be distorting or misleading. It is revealing that even those authors who overtly reject the methods of biographical criticism, such as John Osborne in Larkin, Ideology and Critical Violence in 2008, make use of the biography, at least to a certain extent. In the centre of the book edited by Regan one finds a hilariously subversive essay: Graham Holderness’s “Reading ‘Deceptions’”, a text balanced on the borderline between literary criticism and fiction. It offers four readings of Larkin’s “Deceptions” by four fictitious characters in the same university department: a formalist, a Marxist, a feminist and a post-structuralist critic

Islam

Many Islamic dynasties ruled parts of the Indian subcontinent starting from the 12th century. The prominent ones include the Delhi Sultanate (12061526) and the Mughal empire (15261857). These empires helped in the spread of Islam in South Asia. but by the mid18th century the British empire had ended the Mughal dynasty.[89] In the 18th century the Wahhabi movement took hold in Saudi Arabia. Founded by the preacher Ibn Abd alWahhab, Wahhabism is a fundamentalist ideology that condemns practices like Sufism and the veneration of saints as unIslamic. By the 17th and 18th centuries, despite attempts at modernization, the Ottoman empire had begun to feel threatened by European economic and military advantages. In the 19th century, the rise of nationalism resulted in Greece declaring and winning independence in 1829, with several Balkan states following suit after the Ottomans suffered defeat in the

VÕIM JA JÕUETUS Sotsioloog Steven Lukes on soovitanud võimu käsitleda kolmel tasandil. 1. Otsuste tegemise protsess. 2. Poliitilised teemad, mida käsitletakse poliitilise süsteemi arutluste kaudu. 3. Võimude grupid, kelle huvid ei küündi läbirääkimiste tasememeni. IDEOLOOGIA JA LEGITIIMSUS Võimu legitiimsus on ühiskonnas väga oluline. Arenenud rahvad lähtuvad ideoloogiatest. Ideoloogiat on raske defineerida: ideology is that aspect of culture witch concerns how society ought to be organised; it concerns politics, rules and the distinction between right and wrong. OMISTAMINE VS SAAVUTUS Sahlins on võrrelnud kaht süsteemi. 1. Egalitaarne ehk sotsiaalse võrdsuse pooldamise süsteem on orienteeritud saavutustele. See tagab individuaalsuse. 2. Lawmakers wanted to show that legal rights of their citizens originated in the state. Because of that it was necessary to separate legislature and judiciary so that state could make laws not courts. The clear distinction between legislature and judiciary has weakened in many counties as the courts are able to challenge the legality of a law made by parliament. Lawmakers were often influenced by the canon law. Canon law had a stronger influence in countries with less secular ideology. 5. Civil law Civil law – the part of the legal system that relates to personal matters, such as marriage and property, rather than crime Public law – the area of law that deals with the relationship between the government and other organizations or between the government and the public Private law – the area of law that deals with disagreements between people or companies Family law – an area of the law that deals with matrimonial matters and domestic relations

in Moscow last winter when he said that the designers and perpetrators of the Holocaust were the heirs of Kant and Goethe. In most respects the Germans were the best educated people on Earth, but their education did not serve as an adequate barrier to barbarity. What was wrong with their education? In Wiesel's words: "It emphasized theories instead of values, concepts rather than human beings, abstraction rather than consciousness, answers instead of questions, ideology and efficiency rather than conscience." The same could be said of the way our education has prepared us to think about the natural world. It is a matter of no small consequence that the only people who have lived sustainably on the planet for any length of time could not read, or, like the Amish, do not make a fetish of reading. My point is simply that education is no guarantee of decency, prudence, or wisdom. More of the same kind of education will only compound our problems

Republicanism: The doctrine of republicanism asserts a system of a government that is elected by the people of the nation. The roots of this ideology go back to ancient Greece, when the concept of a democratic government was examined by philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Individual Liberty: "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" developed as the motto of this era, which forms the cornerstone of the U.S. Constitution today. Some religious institutions will be open to the new consciousness; others will harden their doctrinal positions and become part of all those other man-made structures through which the collective ego will defend itself and “fight back.” Some churches, sects, cults, or religious movements are basically collective egoic entities, as rigidly identified with their mental positions as the followers of any political ideology that is closed to any alternative interpretation of reality. But the ego is destined to dissolve, and all its ossified structures, whether they be religious or other institutions, corporations, or governments, will disintegrate from within, no matter how deeply entrenched they appear to be. The most rigid structures, the most impervious to change, will collapse first. This has already happened in the case of Soviet Communism. How
