Solomon Islands
Geography
The Solomon Islands lie northeast of Australia in the South Pacific Ocean . They are part of a long chain of archipelagos called Melanesia, which stretches from Papua New Guinea in the north to New Caledonia and Fiji in the south. Second largest in the Melanesian chain, the Solomon Islands archipelago covers approximately 310,000 square miles (803,000 square kilometers) of ocean and consists of 10,639 square miles (27,556 square kilometers) of land . There are a total of 992 islands in the Solomon Islands
History
When Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira visited the Solomon Islands in 1568, he found some gold at the mouth, he erroneously thought that this could be one of the locations in which King Solomon (the Israelite monarch) obtained gold for his temple in Jerusalem. Mendaña then named the islands after King Solomon—Solomon Islands.
Papuan-speaking hunter -gatherers from New Guinea were settling the southern and eastern Solomon Islands by 25, 000 BC. They were the only inhabitants for thousands of years , until Austronesian-speaking proto-Melanesians began moving in around 4000 BC.
Most people lived in small villages on tribal lands, practicing shifting cultivation, fishing, hunting , carving, weaving and canoe building. They worshipped ancestors. They were also head-hunters and cannibalism was common.
Demography
The population of the Solomon Islands is estimated to be approximately 450,000. It is comprised predominantly of Melanesians with the rest of the population consisting of Polynesians, Micronesians, and small pockets of Chinese and Europeans. The annual growth rate is around 3.5 percent .
Most of the population (85 percent) live in villages. Only those with paid employment are found in the urban centers and provincial headquarters of Honiara (the capital), Auki, Gizo , Buala, Kira Kira, and Lata .
Religion
The religion of Solomon Islands is about 97% Christian . The remaining 3% practice indigenous religious beliefs . According to the most recent reports, Islam in the Solomon Islands is made up of approximately 350 Muslims .
Christianity was brought to the country in the 19th and early 20th centuries by missionaries. Some foreign missionaries continue to work in the country. Except for the Roman Catholic Church . The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respects this right in practice. The US government received no reports of societal abuses or discrimination based on religious belief or practice in 2007.
Local products
Beginning in the early 1990s, small-scale industries were encouraged, resulting in goods that are sold mostly in the local area at retail and wholesale stores. Examples of these locally produced products are beer , furniture, and noodles. Otherwise, agricultural products have been the main commodities for sale .
Attitudes to alcohol
Data from the Customs Department and from a local manufacturer show that the per capita consumption of pure alcohol among those 15 years and older in 1994 was 0.7 liters. This level is far below that of many other South Pacific nations reflecting, in part, the fact that some 90% of the Solomon Island ’s population live in rural villages where they have only limited involvement in the cash economy. It also reflects the concentration of liquor outlets in the capital, Honiara, and the main provincial centers. It is generally believed that the unlawful production of alcoholic beverages (home brew, toddy and kaleve) is not uncommon.

Climate Canada's climate varies wildly based on geography, from perma-frost in the north to four distinct seasons towards the equator. In this region the temperature can climb up to 35 degrees Celsius in the summer and descend to a chilly -25 degrees Celsius during winter. Canada's climate and environment are one of the main reasons that Canada is such a succesful country. The blend of natural resources and climate sustains us. The seasons dictate the look of the land: according to whether the natural environment is in a state of dormancy or growth. Canada's climate is characterized by its diversity, as temperature and precipitation differ depending on where you are and what time of year it is. Other than the North where it's above freezing for only a few months a year, most Canadian cities are within 300 km of the southern border, where mild springs, hot summers and pleasantly crisp autumns are common during the majority of the year.
