Tallinn Town Hall Square

The square in front of Tallinn's Town Hall functioned as a marketplace for centuries, dating back to times even before the Town Hall itself was built. Through the years this served as a place of celebrations as well as executions. Today the square remains a cultural focal point for the city. In summer, it's filled with outdoor cafés and is home to countless openair concerts, handicraft fairs and medieval markets. In winter, an annual Christmas Market enchants the crowds on the square, as does the town's Christmas tree (a tradition whose roots stretch back to 1441), which stays up for a month or more. Town Hall Square has also become the traditional centre of the Old Town Days festival, a modern version of a medieval carnival. Traditions from the Middle Ages are kept alive here, including parades, a knights' tournament, a parrotshooting contest and the election of the May Count.

Through the Looking-Glass

Alice couldn't have left the place without seeing the garden so she ran outside where she met some talkative flowers and the Red Queen. The Red Queen was kind enough to help Alice to the top of the hill (and she actually had to walk in the other direction to reach the desired place). Once on the top of the hill Alice noted that the world seemed as if it were a chessboard and WISHED she could be a part of it a queen maybe. The Red Queen then helped her to the Second Square, making her Pawn and telling Alice that if she reaches the Eighth Square she can be a Queen and they shall have a feast. Alice then took the railway through the Third Square, as it is known that pawns can take two squares at their first move. When she exited the train with her new friend the Gnat she reached a forest where she was introduced to Looking-Glass bugs, for example Bread-and- Butterfly who lived on weak tea with cream in it. The Gnat soon left her and poor Alice had

Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands Geography The Solomon Islands lie northeast of Australia in the South Pacific Ocean. They are part of a long chain of archipelagos called Melanesia, which stretches from Papua New Guinea in the north to New Caledonia and Fiji in the south. Second largest in the Melanesian chain, the Solomon Islands archipelago covers approximately 310,000 square miles (803,000 square kilometers) of ocean and consists of 10,639 square miles (27,556 square kilometers) of land. There are a total of 992 islands in the Solomon Islands History When Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira visited the Solomon Islands in 1568, he found some gold at the mouth, he erroneously thought that this could be one of the locations in which King Solomon (the Israelite monarch) obtained gold for his temple in Jerusalem. Mendaña then named the islands after King Solomon--Solomon Islands.

(King's) Street, Pagari (Baker's) Street, Pikk (Long) Street, Lai (Broad) Street, Karja (Cattle) Street. There were some ancient streets in Tallinn which had obviously been named before the qonquest, marking the destination they finally led, like Harju and Viru Street. Foreigners usually had different names for such streets. The streets were paved since the beginning of the 14th century. Pikk Jalg was among the first to be paved. Town Hall Square got its cover in 1310. There were no streetlights. The houses had no numbers and were known by the owner's name. Churches The Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin (the Dome Church) was consecrated in 1240. The church suffered in the fire of 1684 and was largely reconstructed. A Baroque tower was added in the 18th century and the dated weather-vane (1779) crowning the spire is the only original one on Toompea today.
