Demography The population of the Solomon Islands is estimated to be approximately 450,000. It is comprised predominantly of Melanesians with the rest of the population consisting of Polynesians, Micronesians, and small pockets of Chinese and Europeans. The annual growth rate is around 3.5 percent. Most of the population (85 percent) live in villages. Only those with paid employment are found in the urban centers and provincial headquarters of Honiara (the capital), Auki, Gizo, Buala, Kira Kira, and Lata. Religion The religion of Solomon Islands is about 97% Christian. The remaining 3% practice indigenous religious beliefs. According to the most recent reports, Islam in the Solomon Islands is made up of approximately 350 Muslims. Christianity was brought to the country in the 19th and early 20th centuries by missionaries. Some foreign missionaries continue to work in the country. Except for the Roman Catholic Church
