A Quiss -an-Kweedass
lost no time and soon
found the lake and then the
tree. He called her by name. After he called her
several times, she
looked out and said, "Where do tou come from? ANd who are you?"
"I am Quiss-an-Kweedass," said he. "I have been
looking for you for
years . Now that I have found you, I
mean to take
you home. Will you come?" "I
cannot go with you
until my
husband , the
cheif of the bears, returns." After a while she
agreed to come down and he hastily carried her off home.

wise man
asked Quiss-an-Kweedass if he had
anything the girl had
worn. He
gave a
part of her
clothing to the wise man, who
took it in
his
hand and said, "I see a young woman
lying on the
ground ; she
seems to be asleep. There is
something in the bushes, coming towards
her. It is a large bear. He
takes hold of her; she tries to get
away but cannot. He takes her with him, a long way off. I see a lake. They
reach it and stop at a large cedar tree. She lives in the tree with
the bear. I see two
children , boys that she has had by the bear. If
you go to the lake and
find the tree, you will find
them all
there."

C When he rached home, his
parents welcomed him and asked about
Kind-a-wuss. He told them everything. When the parents heard that she
had become his wife, they
became furious. They told Quiss-an-Kweedass
that he would
never go
back and
locked him up. They decided to keeü
him prisoner until she also returned. After two years he managed to
escape . He ran to his
mountain home, hoping to meet Kind-a-wuss, yet
fearing that something might be
wrong . Getting to their hut, he did
not see her. When he wen tinside, he was suprised to find that she
had not been there
since he left. Hoping to find some clue, he
searched the hut, looked up and down the
stream , and then
went back
home,
feeling sorry for his wife, and angry with his parents, whom he
blamed for his
misfortune . he though he would visit a wise man.

D Quiss-an-Kweedass and Kind-a-wuss were a youg man and a beautiful
girl in my
native village. They were about the
same age and had been
playmates from youth. Their friendship grew into love. But they knew
that they could never live as husband and wife. Their parents
wanted them to marry
someone else and decided to separate them. The lovers
escaped to the
woods and lived in the mountain forests. When the
longer nights and story days reminded them of
winter ,
Quiss-an-Kweedass wanted to revisit his home, and to make the
journey alone. He promised to return on the
fourth day.

E Her parents were
glad to have their lost
child , and
Quiss-an-KJweedass was
happy to have his
wide . Although she was at
home and kindly welcomed, she was worried about her two
sons and
wished to return for them. She explained that the bear had made up a
song for her, and if Quiss-an-Kweedass went to the tree and
sang it,
the bear chief would give him whatever he wished. After learning the
song, Quiss-an-Kweedass went to the tree and began to sing. As soon
as the bear heard the song, he came down, thinking that Kind-a-wuss
had returned. When he saw that she was not there, he was
upset and
refused to let the children go. When Quiss-an-Kweedass threatened to
take them by force, he agreed to send the children to their
mother .
