Symbols The national flag of the United States of America. The fifty stars on the flag represent the 50 states and the 13 stripes represent the original thirteen colonies that rebelled against the British monarchy and became the first states in the Union. Nicknames for the flag include the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and The Star-Spangled Banner. The flag of the United States is one of the nation's most widely recognized symbols. Within the U.S. it is frequently displayed, not only on public buildings, but on private residences. It is also used as a motif on decals for car windows, and clothing ornaments such as badges and lapel pins. Throughout the world it is used in public discourse to refer to the U.S., not only as a nation, state, government, and set of policies, but also as an ideology and set of ideals. In organizational or marketing contexts, science fiction can be synonymous with the broader definition of speculative fiction, encompassing creative works incorporating imaginative elements not found in contemporary reality; this includes fantasy, horror, and related genres. Science fiction differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas".Science fiction is largely based on writing entertainingly and

Restoration, in English history, is the reestablishment of the monarchy on the accession (1660) of Charles II after the collapse of the Commonwealth (see under commonwealth) and the Protectorate. The term is often used to refer to the entire period from 1660 to the fall of James II in 1688. 19. The Whigs and Tories. Within Parliament, the tensions and disagreements of the Civil War and its aftermath were echoed in the formation of two vaguely opposed, loose collections of allies. One group, the Whigs, were the political “descendants” of the parliamentarians. They supported the Protestant values of hard work and economic efficiency, were sympathetic to dissenters and believed in government by monarchy and aristocracy together

Games Programming with Java and Java 3D

the chosen JVM; IBM's implementation exceeded the performance of C++ code compiled with gcc [Ladd 2003]. A detailed comparison of difference versions of Java and other companies' virtual machines and native code compilers can be found in [Doederlein 2002]. An area of Java that is still slow is its GUI API, Swing. GUI components are created and controlled from Java, with little OS support: this increases their portability and makes them more controllable from within a Java program. The downside is speed since Java imposes an extra layer of processing above the OS. This is one reason why some games applications still utilise the original Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) -- it is mostly just simple wrapper methods around OS calls. However, most games do not require complex GUIs: full-screen game play with mouse and keyboard controls are the norm, so GUI speed is less of a factor.

By the time they got onto the Interstate, Arthur had had enough. So he pulled over to the side of the road, got out, walked around, opened Arnold's door, grabbed him by the shirt collar, yanked him out, and said something to the effect of, "Listen here, you son of a bitch. If you don't shut the hell up, a man twice your age is going to whip your ass right out here in front of I-4 traffic. Just dare me." Within five seconds Arnold had apologized, got back in the car, and was a perfect gentlemen for the next three or four days. Jones was more frequently pissed off than anything else. He was infuriated by what he considered stupidity in every corner of the exercise science world, and he channeled this anger into defying the odds. History of the English language

thurs ("Thor", "giant") in the Scandinavian rune poems, its reconstructed Proto-Germanic name being *Thurisaz. It has the sound of either a voiceless dental fricative, like th as in the English word thick, or a voiced dental fricative, like th as in the English word the. (In Modern Icelandic the usage is restricted to the former. The voiced form is represented with the letter eth (, ), though eth can be unvoiced, depending on its position within a sentence). Yogh-letter (cf yoke Estonian "ike") modified Latin g. Probably stood for several sounds starting with /j/ up to /g/. Prefix ge probably · not stressed · yokh-letter stood for /j/. Reasons for surmising this: 1. The prefix is still there in German (Past Participle, e.g. gehen, ging. gegangen). It is not stressed in German. 2. The prefix was lost during the Middle English times (geholpan holpen), it is easier to drop unstressed syllables. 3

Referaat Islami usust

During this time, Muhammad preached to the people of Mecca, imploring them to abandon polytheism. Although some converted to Islam, Muhammad and his followers were persecuted by the leading Meccan authorities. After 12 years of preaching, Muhammad and the Muslims performed the Hijra ("emigration") to the city of Medina in 622. There, with the Medinan converts and the Meccan migrants, Muhammad established his political and religious authority. Within years, two battles had been fought against Meccan forces: the Battle of Badr in 624, which was a Muslim victory, and the Battle of Uhud in 625, which ended inconclusively. Conflict with Medinan Jewish clans who opposed the Muslims led to their exile, enslavement, or death, and the Jewish enclave of Khaybar was subdued. At the same time, Meccan trade routes were cut off as Muhammad brought surrounding desert tribes under his control

She wished to be informed of political matters, although she had no direct input in policy decisions. The Reform Act of 1832 had set the standard of legislative authority residing in the House of Lords, with executive Viscount Melbourneauthority resting within a cabinet formed of members of the House of Commons; the monarch was essentially removed from the loop. -All Member States have sovereign equality. -All Member States must obey the Charter. -Countries must try to settle their differences by peaceful means. -Countries must avoid using force or threatening to use force. -The UN may not interfere in the domestic affairs of any country. -Countries should try to assist the United Nations. The basic structure of the United Nations is outlined in an organizational chart. What the structure does not show is that decision- making within the UN system is not as easy as in many other organizations. The UN is not an independent, homogeneous organization; it is made up of sovereign states, so actions by the UN depend on the will of Member States, to accept, fund or carry them out. Especially in matters of peace-keeping and international politics, it requires a complex, often slow, process of consensus-building that must take into account national sovereignty as well as global needs.

Our aim was to find out how many students use drugs in Jõhvi Gymnasium, investigate what kind of drugs students consume and to find out how often they are being used by teenagers, and whether it has changed their way of life in any way. The work was carried out by an online survey questionnaire and the compilation of students' answers to analyse the students' opinions and habits of drug use. Only the students of Jõhvi Gymnasium were within the scope of the survey, we got a total of 58 respondents. Throughout the work, we revealed that our estimated problem of drug abuse in Jõhvi Gymnasium didn't meet our limits. The problem was that over 70% of the respondents consumed or have consumed legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol, and over 50% of these respondents were minors, it can be inferred that high school students' way of life is quite unhealthy. The Rocky Mountains, often called the Rockies, are a broad mountain range in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 4800 km. The Rocky Mountain System within the United States is a United States physiographic region. Though part of the Pacific Cordillera, they are not to be confused with the Pacific Coast Ranges which are located immediately adjacent to the Pacific coast. However, though Jake does perceive the problems in his life, he seems either unwilling or unable to remedy them. Though he understands the dilemma of the Lost Generation, he remains trapped within it. Lady Brett Ashley Brett is a strong, largely independent woman. She exerts great power over the men around her, as her beauty and charisma seem to charm everyone she meets. Moreover, she refuses to commit to any one man, preferring ultimate independence. Much of the evidence presented in this book, then, comes from my experience posing as a compliance professional, or aspiring professional, in a large variety of organizations dedicated to getting us to say yes. One aspect of what I learned in this three-year period of participant observa- tion was most instructive. Although there are thousands of different tactics that compliance practitioners employ to produce yes, the majority fall within six basic categories. Each of these categories is governed by a fundamental psycholog- ical principle that directs human behavior and, in so doing, gives the tactics their power. This book is organized around these six principles. The principles- reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity-are each discussed in terms of their function in the society and in terms of how their enor-

Sociocultural level of analysis Outline principles that define the sociocultural level of analysis. 1) Human beings are social animals and we have a basic need to belong. 2) Culture influences behavior. 3) Humans have a social self (a collective identity), which develops within social contexts. 4) People's views of the world are resistant to change. Explain how principles that define the sociocultural level of analysis may be demonstrated in research. 1) Conformity is the tendency to adjust one's feelings, thoughts, or behavior in ways that are in agreement with those of a particular individual or group, or with accepted standards of how a person should behave in specific situations.

lakes in the Northwest Territories and Lakes Manitoba and Winnipeg in Manitoba. Mackenzie River is Canada's longest river, which flows 4,241 km from its source to its mouth. With its many tributaries, it drains 1,800,000 square km. The St. Lawrence is the largest river flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Its drainage basin includes the Great Lakes, forming an inland navigable waterway extending some 3,765 km into the heart of the continent. The longest Pacific-draining river that is wholly within Canada is the Fraser. The Yukon and Columbia rivers, which both rise in Canada, also flow to the Pacific, but they do so through the United States. Five of Canada's rivers -- the St. Lawrence, Mackenzie, Yukon, Fraser, and Nelson -- rank among the world's 40 longest. 5. newspapers. Douglass was an ordained minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Autobiography Douglass' most well-known work is his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which was published in 1845. Critics frequently attacked the book as inauthentic, not believing that a black man could possibly have produced so eloquent a piece of literature. The book was an immediate bestseller and received overwhelmingly positive critical reviews. Within three years of its publication, it had been reprinted nine times with 11,000 copies circulating in the United States; it was also translated into the French and Dutch languages. The book's success had an unfortunate side effect: his friends and mentors feared that the publicity would draw the attention of his ex-owner, Hugh Auld, who could try to get his "property" back. They encouraged him to go on a tour in Ireland, as many other ex-slaves had done in the past

1930s. The Labour Party was formed by James Keir Hardie in 1892 to represent the workers. The recently-formed Green Party has begun to threaten the left-of-centre Liberal Democratic Party as the nation's "third" party. There is a large body of laws that have never been codified known as common law. 5) Economy, industry, agriculture, tourism The UK economy has performed remarkably well for the past 15 years, especially in the service sector. The value of all goods and services produced within the UK economy for final consumption is measured by GDP. The biggest companies are BP energy, Vodafone, GlaxoSmithKlein, HSBC Holdings, Royal Bank of Scotland, etc. The main revenue sources were taxes on income, taxes on expenditure, National Insurance Contributions, taxes on capital. The profile of British industry has changed greatly since WW II. About 70% today work in service industries. Agriculture takes up almost 80% of the land but employs only 1-2% of the total workforce

The reforms replaced collectivization of Chinese agriculture with privatization of farmlands, increased the responsibility of local authorities and industry managers, allowed a wide variety of small-scale enterprises to flourish, and promoted foreign investment. Price controls were also relaxed. These changes resulted in mainland China's shift from a planned economy to a mixed economy. China became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001

you the freedom of expression. Some creative questions can "Choose an issue of international concern and discuss its importance to you" or "Why have you chosen this career?" Ideal response: While responding to creative questions, again, as mentioned before, you should not focus on the issues; rather try to write about how they make a difference to you or why they hold importance for you. Also make sure that you demonstrate within the essay how you can succeed in a competitive college setting without actually mentioning it. 3 Sometimes the topics you choose can be impossible to write about even though they may seem easy at first, and sometimes even boring topics can be made interesting creatively approached. If the answer to any of the following questions is "no" then you really need to rethink your topic and select a new one.

"Career and Employment" Homereading

Changing career: 'These days, I go home feeling relaxed' Starting a new career is a daunting prospect for many. But Kate Hilpern discovers that plenty of help is at hand Some of the jobs that career changers are most keen to break into PR and teaching, among them are the very same jobs that people are queuing to get out of, says John Lees, author of How to Get a Job You'll Love and Take Control of Your Career. Many of us get to the point, whether in our twenties, thirties, forties or fifties where we decide to change careers. Some of us will make radical changes, while others will move to the edge of their comfort zone, perhaps shifting from acupuncturist to homeopath or PR office to journalist. But the key to making the right decision, says Lees, is to bring your dream back down to life with a hard thump. "I always say to people, 'Find out what you will actually be doing in the job of your dreams. What does the nitty-gritty day-...

Using Blogs as a Platform in the TEFL

Namely, these do not merely establish scaffolding for beginners, nor do they allow students to learn from multiple perspectives or receive support from advanced students. They also create a relatively learner-centered environment that allows students to learn at their own pace (Yang, 2009). However, in my view, if the information that the students are learning is incorrect, then all of the students are being misinformed. Obviously, the spreading of misinformation is self-governed within the community, and it's the responsibility of people adding ed material to ensure that the material doesn't contain misinformation. Last but not least argument that speaks for the use of blogs in education concerns the fact that blogs might serve as a link between formal and non-formal education, where students learn to learn by themselves (Lissina, 2010). Moreover, the results of Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean

Biogas – The source of future energy

1% calcium ammonium nitrate of the dung is combined with the slurry in such cases. At times waste of kitchens and excrement of human bodies is used in these processes. The human excreta are supposed to occupy, at the most, 3% of the slurry. The addition of human excreta is crucial in this context as it increases the amount of production of biogas. This is because human excreta have high nitrogen content. The ideal temperature for producing biogas is within 35 to 38 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is lower than that then the production of biogas may go down as well. If the temperature is 15 degree Celsius then it would be impossible to produce any biogas. This is precisely the reason as to why thermal insulation is necessary to produce biogas when it is the winter season or at places where the temperatures are normally lower than the requisite level. The heating of digesters is also pretty important in this regard

Jane Austen

Bingley, his two sisters, the husband of the eldest, and another young man. Mr. Bingley was good-looking and gentlemanlike; he had a pleasant countenance, and easy, unaffected manners. His sisters were fine women, with an air of decided fashion. His brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, merely looked the gentleman; but his friend Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien, and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year. The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr. Bingley, and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud; to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a

Energeetika arengu plaanimine

The name "geothermal" comes from two Greek words: "geo" means "Earth" and "thermal" means "heat". Geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly, but has previously been geographically limited to areas near tectonic plate boundaries. Recent technological advances have dramatically expanded the range and size of viable resources, especially for direct applications such as home heating. Geothermal wells tend to release greenhouse gases trapped deep within the earth, but these emissions are much lower than those of conventional fossil fuels. As a result, this technology has the potential to help mitigate global warming if widely deployed. How it works Hot rocks underground heat water to produce steam. We drill holes down to the hot region, steam comes up, is purified and used to drive turbines, which drive electric generators. There may be natural "groundwater" in the hot rocks anyway, or we may need to drill more holes and
